Sunday the weather was 10 here so I went on a truck-spiffing binge and polished my Ram up all pretty :) . I even gave it a good wax job and now it's looking  I worked on it so much I was sure it would rain yesterday, but there hasn't been a cloud in the sky since Saturday. . . wow.

I noticed last summer on my tailgate that the clearcoat is swirled really bad. It has really lost its lustre. I have no idea how it happened but evidently some dust or debris somehow got on my wax pad and did some abrasive damage to the paint.

I have tried a couple of different products without success at restoring the finish. I tried the fine scratch remover you can get at Schucks and even though it works great on fine scratches, it does nothing for swirled finishes.

I am wondering if anyone has a suggestion for anything else to try.

Thanks everyone.

I've had great luck with Hi-Temp products, and also Top-of-the Line has their own line of Caranuaba waz that is unbelievable. Couple that up with the Cyclo polisher, and you're set!

swirl marks

the truck was about 6 months old and my wife hauled some camping gear. she was told the road she was on was ok to the campsite. however, some of the adult leaders took her down a hiking trail not an access road. once home i surveyed the damage. not good ! i used elbow grease and a product i use on my harley : swirl and scratch treatment follow wiht coat of harley glaze. very satisfied. i did'nt use a buffer for fear of too much heat. just couldnt force a buffer on a new truck. bruce

Ok the proper way to take care of the paint on your truck is forst when the paint is right it should feel like your touching your mirror in your bathroom that smooth 1st you want to wash it and dry it off real good then you want to polish it to replenish the oils in the paint and clear coat then you want to wax it to protect the polish and clear coat and when your dne spray it with a light mist from your hose and wipe it down that will make it shine real nice Ive had my truck 2yrs this april and it looks as good as the day I got it, its best to wax it every 3 months hope this helps and also I use only 3M produsts from Napa they are great!

I use 3M products and love them. They make a swirl removerfor dark cars. They have a website. Most autobody supply house have it or Pep Boys

I agree with diesel DOG.

3M products are the best I've used. Their swirl mare remover works very well. Even the guy at Zaino's recommended the 3M swirl mark remover.

There certainly is no shortage of choices! Thanks to everyon for all the great suggestions and web links. I never heard of Zaino's before, and didn't realize 3M had car care products. Looks like Zaino's, Griot's Garage and Hi Temp have about every choice you'll ever need. I haven't tried Meguiar's but hear it is good stuff and I know you can pick it up most anywhere.

I have been using Zymol which is fine, it does shine up good. I found though when applied on dark blue paint in warm weather it looks very blotchy for a couple days, no matter how carefully you buff it. The cleaner variety doesn't do anything for swirled finishes, but I don't think it was designed for that application. The last wax I used last fall was Eagle 1 which I felt shined up better than the Zymol and didn't look blotchy at all.

Cooker & Diesel Dog, if I can pick up the 3M stuff locally I think I'll give that a try. Especially if the Zaino guys say it's good!
