My girlfriend bought me a vinyl floor to replace the very cheesy carpet in my 92 (actually, it is more felt than carpet). The vinyl piece seems quite heavy and will work well enough in my pickup, but they sent a VERY minimal amount of insulation, like barely enough to do a regular cab if you cut out around the seat mounts and scrap it in. I would like to get something to do the entire floor area, firewall to rear of the cab. I am not so interested in softness under the dogs' feet as I am interested in soundproofing and insualation (esp to cut the AC workload in the summer). I will probably do the sides of the rear portion of the cab while I have it all apart. How good is the stuff from Geno's? Any other options?

Thanks,

Daniel

If you ebay there are much cheaper deals available, search sound deadening etc. Nuprene is 1/8" thick, used in airline industry supposedly, black foam sheeting. There is also a foil faced bubble pack type I would use up off the floor only, cheap too. I have used both at a fraction of what the name brands cost.

One thing I have wanted to do is use a low expanding type spray foam to fill the a-pillars and inner roof cavity. Anyone do this before?

On filling the pillars, etc, do not do it unless you can coat all of the metal with some sort of rust proofing or sealer. I tried this once and ruined a perfectly good cab. Lost the whole top to the rust worm.

The first thing I changed on my truck is the floor covering as well. I pulled out the filthy gray carpeting, cleaned the naked floor meticulously and installed "ready fit" rubber floor covering from . . . JC Whitney (if memory serves me) for 90-something bucks plus shipping. Since I'm slow and quite anal retentive, it took me all day to do that as there was quite a bit of trimming involved. Didn't put any insulation underneath, as the floor covering I received was a two part deal with a brown horsehair-kinda base mat below the actual rubber. Have it in there for a couple of years now and consider it the best money ever spent on the truck. No more dirt, easy to clean, and most importantly, no more humidity that bleeds though the carpeting and creates potential rust spots. Beats me why not everybody does it. I have the same (stock rubber mat) in my stock '71 Dodge pickup and if I ever get another truck, I'll switch to rubber in a heartbeat. Noise level is exactly as before. Actually everything is exactly as before, minus the dirt that is kind of inevidable on a "truck. "

Two thumbs up!

P. S.

"NEVER use foam on metal" is a lesson I learned the hard way when I was young and dumb. It's a sure way to get the rust going.

Damplifier with Overkill closed cell foam sheet

I only have experience with stock and with the option I chose, but after some limited internet research and price shopping I went with Damplifier sheeting with Overkill Closed cell foam on the ceiling above the headliner and two layers under the feet.

Big difference! I can't see building another vehicle without it. I went to a High end Hot Rod custom shop in SLC to see the stuff and that is what they used.

180 SF Damplifier std. and two sheets of Overkill foam. 1 can of adhesive was way more than I needed for the closed cell foam.

Cheapest suppier was from the source at www.secondskinaudio.com

Pics available if interested.

Good Luck with the decision, but I agree..... Do something to protect your hearing.

I used the Dynamat Xtreme, with good results. Somewhere on the web there is a comparison between the different types and the Dynamat came out pretty good without going to the sprays. You can find the bulk packs on Ebay for around $90, from the sound shop in DE it was $280 retail. Took two bulk packs to do the cab the way I want it, but then I did the entire cab, doors, back wall, firewall, and roof.
