Money?

My injectors on my truck either need to be rebuilt or replaced. Everything is stock, so I wonder should I go ahead and get the Lucas injectors, or should I get mine rebuilt. Would I need any other accesories if I bought the Lucas injectors? Thanks!

I have an auto in my truck so i decided to go with the pw's for a mild 40-50 hp increase. The extra power would probably just make for more slippage with the bigger injectors so you would't feel the extra power anyway.

If you shop around the PW's and Lucas should be priced about the same. Why not get more power for the same money. If you can use it, great. If not, well then you need to spend more money. :D

BD's????

Anyone with comments on the BD's??? I had the 180 BD's in the 89 and I know of a couple guys here with them, they were pretty good. But I noticed that at BD they have the xxx injectors and the high flows that are the Ol'Blue specials. Big $$$ difference though. The Ol' blues are about $100 - 150 more.

What are the specs on the xxx ??? same as the 180's?? I am thinking of going BD.

So...

You're saying (rdodd) that I shouldn't go with the Lucas because I have an automatic, or Matt S says I should. Since I'm not really looking for hella more horsepower (although I should be :) ), I think I could just go for some PW injectors, for the "mild 40-50 hp increase". Sounds good, rdodd! Now can anyone tell me where I can find these at so I can order them? My truck is smoking like a son of a *****. Bad injectors. . .

Thanks!

you forgot to say if you truck is intercooled or not, The early 91's where not, With that said if you get the PW's and your truck is non intercooled you will have less fuel flow ie less power than the stock injectors. On the other hand if you have a later 91 the PW's should show a gain in power. But in my opioion i say go with the bigger injectors, too many people on here make the mistake of buying lower powered stuff only to replace it down the road with more powerful equipment. if the lucas injectors where too much power for your auto you could always adjust the pump down or change the fuel to come in later. anyways i say go with the lucas injectors either way

yeah, about the intercooler...

I have a non intercooled beast, what should I do then? Rebuild the stock ones? I don't know what to do!!:(

I'm using the BD 180's and am quite happy with them. I've never used any others so I can't compare them but I think they flow enough that I'd have to have a perf. pump to max them out. ( I think)

I also managed to keep a decent idle with them as well. There was some small smoke increase which adjusted out with the AFC.

(That is until I diddled with the starwheel and fuel screw :D :D )

On the 91. 5 to 93 factory intercooled trucks, the PW/BD/Bosch injectors will add 28 rwhp. The Lucas injectors will add 52 rwhp. On the 89 to 91. 5 factory non-intercooled trucks the PW/BD/Bosch injectors will loose rwhp while the Lucas add an extra 32 rwhp. The Lucas are 7mm tipped injectors, so putting them into a non-intercooled engine [ they have 9mm tips ] will require the use of the Cummins 7mm to 9mm adapter sealing washers.

Jaynes, since you have non-intercooled truck you should go with lucus injectors since pw's would give you less power than your stock injectors. As far as torque converter slippage with more power you have the 3-speed auto without overdrive that is tougher than my auto with overdrive. Most of my slippage occurs in overdrive, although my BD low stall torque converter with new x-stator helps handle the power much better with less slippage.

Piers,

Do you have any ideas on more powerful injectors for a non-intercooled 1st Gen? I'll second what he said about the PW's losing power on these trucks. I made that mistake already.

Alrighty

So now I know I need to go with the Lucas injectors with the 7mm tips, where do I get the adapter sealing washers from. Should I order them straight from Cummins? And can anyone give me info on where to order these from? Thanks guys, I'm getting down to the bottom of this now, and I appreciate your help.

'89 Intercooled

Piers,

What is the gain with an '89 head intercooled with a '93 intercooler?

Is the Lucas injector the way yo go?

Tow?

Does any one tow with the big daddy lucas jobs? Just thought I'd see if it is possiable without a chimmney for an exhaust pipe and water injection :D

I recently came across some injectors at Advanced Diesel Technology, www.smokindiesel.com , that are called an "industrial" injector. These are new Bosch injectors, advertised at 60hp gain, slight increase in MPG with a little smoke at low boost. Is anyone running these in a 92 or 93, intercooled? Part #s , original application or personal experience info appreciated.

Funny, a local distributor for BullyDog was talking about these "Industrial injectors". Don't have any specs other than about 40 RWHP gain... .

HHHmmmmm

Wonder what they are... . I looked on their site and had to wonder because I always trust what Piers has to say, and if you have been following this thread then you too would tend to wonder why these "industrial" injectors are labeled for 89-93. According to Piers the early trucks need different injectors then the newer ones.

King of the Hill

Ya gotta go with the Lucas:D , you just gotta. I believe that in our old VE equipped trucks, these injectors will not only relieve the extra strain placed on the pump by turning it up, but they will also flow all of the fuel that it will pump. I actually turned my pump down a 1/2 turn when I installed them, and I have 28lbs of boost, up from 19lbs. I towed a small trailer (3,000lbs?) this weekend, but I took the scenic route along the Missouri River from Hermann (Hwy 94) Anyway, most of the hills you can't get a run at because of all the turns. But my truck would flatten them out in 5th. I also learned that accelerating up a hill in the middle of it does nothing but raise EGT's. Maintaing a certain speed wasn't a problem for power, of EGT's. I also pull my (4,000lbs?) tandem axle trailer daily with no power problem or EGT. Sometimes I think that I am low on power, then I look down only to surprise myself by going 65mph up a grade with the trailer in tow.

Anyone havin' second thoughts about injectors, forget about all of the others and call Big Don, tell him that you want the 'Ol Blue Specials!!:D :D They'll put a smile on your face.
