Dave MacArthur: "Does anyone here have a PTO pump on their truck? Does anyone know if there is a vendor that sells a complete kit? "

You might want to look at www.northerntool.com. They have add on hydraulic pumps ie. like dc clutched ac compressors in v-belt and serpentine configurations. I have thought about this is the past but then I would have to add the tank and filter, etc.

My mile marker 10,500 is a 2 speed version, so it can be fast in the high speed position but is only rated at ~1500lbs on first wrap in the high speed mode.

I have one question, if you use a snatch block to double the pulling power and halve the line speed, where do you attach it to?

If you attach it the either frame rail, would this not have a tendansy to pull you frame out of alignment?? ie. not equal pulling load like the winch itself. Or do you somehow attach it back to the center of the winch mount?

I've also been wondering about using a snatch block to double the pulling power. When you look at specs for winch's, the pulling power (motor current) varies with the number of wraps of cable on the winch. If you use a snatch block, but have to pull out more line to get back to the truck, how much do you really gain? Obviously the higher current draw will burn up the motor faster.

Or, maybe I'm missing something or over analyzing the situation.

The less cable on the winch, the more pulling power you have because the cable is closer to the drum. The line speed is also slower. So when you pull double the cable out to use a snatch block you are placing the least amount of load on the winch itself. The smaller the load the less current draw you have.

You would attach the returning line onto a tow hook, or other established tow point.

You're essentially doubling the pulling power, but agreed, you're taking more lines off the drum. This is the price you'd pay in this situation for a self recovery. If the winch doesn't have the oomph to get you out and you're out of choices...

Anyone have any opinions about the electric winch manufactured by MileMarker. It is an 8000# model. Would it be a goo choice to mount on the front of a flatbed car hauler? Or would a smaller winch be acceptable?

Can you actually get that winch? They were going to sell them through Leon Rosser, but they'd apparently missed their ship date (January).

They're sourced from overseas (China), but they look like a rebadged Ramsey. I think 8000 lb would be plenty.

Yeah as faras I know I can get it. I thought that it was very similar to the Ramsey when comparing them on the web.

I'm with d90boy. I have a Warn 8274 on my FJ. 100ft of 3/8 cable and there's nothing to worry about. If I was going to get one for my tow rig it would be the Warn 15000 (pricey?). This way you don't have to worry.

Mgordon, I think that for what you say you want to do, a hydraulic unit is overkill and makes things unnecessarily complicated. I have the Warn HS9500i and am very happy with it. Keep in mind that this model is double the line speed of a lot of other winches, which means you can double the pulling power with a snatch block and still pull as fast as most winches can doing a single line pull. Like I said I am very happy with this Warn. The hardest job I have done with it was this past winter I got stuck trying to pull a Drof out of a ditch, and I winched us out up a steep hill for about 350' with the only breaks to reel out a rehook the cable. Thats at least five minutes of almost continuous operation, without the engine running, NO snatch block, pulling me and a F150, probably 2-3k over the rated capacity without a problem or overheating. That is as hard as I will ever push it.
