First long trip I have about 3000 miles on my 03', took her up to No. Calif. , avg'd 18. 4 mpg, and that was cruising at 83 mph for 90% of the time, I also hit alot of bumper to bumper traffic around San Fran. I was very pleased with the mileage, I'm sure I could have gotten over 20 mpg if I would have cruised at 70 and if I didn't hit the city traffic... but I need some weight in the back to make this beast ride better!

Kick up the air pressure to about 60 square (or at least 60 in the front and 50 in the back) and I'll bet you hit 20! You are getting tremendous mileage for that speed! You'll get used to the ride.

I achieved 20. 1 mpg on the trip to Muncie and back this past weekend. 915 miles on 45. 5 gallons, top-off to top-off. That was running between 70 and 85 mph most of the way (mostly around 70 though). The computer read 20. 0 so it seems to be reasonably accurate.

I'm really happy with the mileage I've obtained so far. And this is with only about 2000 mile on the truck.

Auto or 6-speed? Regardless, great MPGs!

I know where Muncie is. I direct courses at IU three times a year at the Bloomington campus.

Jeremiah - it's the six speed. By the way, the truck weighs 7220 pounds with me and a full tank of fuel.

That's about right. Mine weighs 7800 w/me, 60 percent fuel and two Portuguese water dogs on board. I also have the Line-X bedliner w/a commercial thickness, which adds to the weight.

There isn't but 2100 lbs left before hitting 9900, which isn't much compared to the Phord. But I wanted the Cummins engine more than load-carrying capability.

I have a friend who pulls an 11,000 lb. 5th-wheel (or so he says). That puts him close to 19,000 lbs. , or 3,000 lbs. over what the truck is designed to pull. He says the truck handles it fine.

Other drivers haul trailers w/hay, etc. , and say they are well over 20,000 lbs. Their trucks are probably broken in at 100 miles or so.

Heh-heh ... only an ex-PowerSmoke owner would call his Dodge truck a Crew Cab. Dodges are Quad Cabs. But I know whatcha mean. I too will keep mine stock, I think. It runs quite well at 9,000 feet MSL so why should I tinker with it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?

I'll bet Dodge 4 x 4s are a rarity in Hawaii, huh?

Jeremiah,

That's the way I feel as well. My truck has all that I want the way it is. Others may have a need for more and I certainly respect that point of view. I was never completely happy with the 98. 5, powerwise and had I kept it I would have eventually bombed it.

Filling up with DEBIT cards...

First, as a 4x4 48RE driver - I dont care about MPG... . well, maybe just a little..... alright, so I calculate it every stinkin' dang fill-up, whats it to ya!!!!

This morning I went to fill at the local "low price" Exxon, where I normally get fuel. Previously, I had noticed that I never get more than 24 to 26 gallons in it before the pump shuts off, usually the guage was showing about a 1/4 tank. But this time, my low fuel light had been on for about 15 miles, so I figured I'd end up with a good 30 to 32 gallons. Well, it shut off again, right at 24 gallons. So I went in and asked the clerk if they limited the amount of fuel or something. Turns out that if you use debit cards at the pump, your transaction can be limited to a certain dollar amount (he claimed it was the bank that did this). So all this time, I hadnt been getting a completely full tank at this station, but it was always just enough so that my guage showed a full tank. Next time, I'm going to try using the Credit button, to see if that changes things... .

I wonder how many of the guys that post this great mileage are actually experiencing "premature shut off"?!?!

Re: Filling up with DEBIT cards...

Do you not add any more after it shuts off to round up to the nearest number? I always run mine until it shuts off and then "round up. " I think the most I've ever gotten is 31 gallons and that was after the light had been on for 50 or 60 miles.

Filling w/debit card

Before I started filling at this station, I would top it off just to get a little more fuel in. But there's no reason to try to get a "round number" - I'm an engineer - there's ALWAYS a calculator somewhere close by!

When the pump shuts off, it actually shuts down the transaction, so I cant pump anymore in without re-doing the card (which I did this morning, and got another 5 1/2 gallons in).

Re: Filling w/debit card

Yep, always have the calculator handy. What I meant was a round number for the checkbook. My wife hates it when I do that which is probably why I do it! :)

It's not just debit cards - credit cards do it at some pumps. Mine quit at $50 twice ... ****** me off royally too. I got the same story as you. They blamed it on the bank, I called the bank and they blamed it on the merchant ... told me if I didn't believe them to go somewhere else and buy something expensive and watch it go through like sauce through a goose. I have a $20,000 line of credit and it just didn't make sense for the bank to refuse a charge of $50. Take my word for it: it's the gas station that's afraid of drive-offs. I do business with a different station now.

Re: Filling up with DEBIT cards...

You know, now that I think about it, one of our local TV News programs did a little story on something like this. And I think your right about it being someone other than the bank. It's gotta be either the station, or possibly the company they contract to handle the debit/credit transactions.

Now that prices have evened out here more (@1. 48), I'm going to go back to the other station.

Old Fashioned, Sure Fire Way:

I squeeze all I can into the truck (taking several extra minutes), don't round off or up just fill it all the way.

Go inside, give the guy a couple of twenties and hope I get some change:D .

Then I go back to my truck, write it all down and start to figure it all out.

I have never had a problem with this method;) .

That's precisely what I do! Though my wife says I should go on a diet.

Seriously, the latest report from the Department of the Enviroment claims that it is the colour of the vehicle that determines the best fuel milage. Wouldn't you know it "Bright Silver" is the best. :D

Cheers Ken

Yea something to do with coeficient of drag and energy absorption and rejection angularity. Particle physics must be involved here too. You know: nuetrinos, quarks, pions, and all thier buddies. They just love that silver color!;) Oo. Oo.

Blakers,

You are correct about the ballistics of Bright Silver Metallic. I understand that they were going to call it Nuetrino Silver, but some folks didn't know what that means:rolleyes: :-laf :-laf
