BF Goodrich Tires Sidwall comming apart

Guys, I bought this truck about 6 months ago. Im guessing that these are the 2nd set of tires on her. The previous owner must have loved gravel roads because the tread is pretty rough, although tread depth seems good its just that these tires have been on gravel a lot. I noticed after i washed my truck today that the sidewall rubber is coming off on all 4 but this one is the worst (pass. rear) . . has anyone else had this happen? Am I on borrowed time with these? I have a trip next week pulling a 20ft boat 550 miles. .

been running tire chains or really low pressures???
My BFG's had weather cracking on the sidewalls, but they were 6 years old and had 55K miles on them... I just purchased a new set from NTB. .

Chains on them? ha never know with the previous owner! the I keep a close eye on the pressure. however i have only had this truck for about 6 months and only put about 4000 miles on it. I dont think this is weather cracking is it?

That doesn't look like weather cracking- is it possible that those are recaps?

looks to me like the tires have rubbed against a curb a few times... its common for a curb to rub off the layer of black rubber that covers the white rubber enclosed in the casing for either a white wall or raised white letters... the black rubber that covers the white inserted rubber is thin... if there's not cord (threads) showing the side wall is not damaged... the strength is in the cord material and is protected from the weather by the rubber vulcanized around it...

I can only assume he's had the tires rotated by his selling tire store to maximize the life, thus giving the tire store a chance to sell him additional services... . and at one time he's curbed all the tires...

I'd inspect the tires... and check for weather checking as mentioned above... the truck is an 08 and we assume the other owner bought NEW tires... but any tire dealer can look at the serial # on the tire and tell you the date of manufacturer...

Like Jim Jelag above, I believe that is evidence of repeat curb scraping rather than sidewall failure.

If you're concerned and want to be sure, take it to a BFG tire dealer and ask someone to inspect them.

DOT date code is a four letter group following the letters DOT molded on the backside of the tire. Todays molding date would be molded on a new tire as "0513. "

I have one tire on my 2011 that looks the same way. I think the original owner curbed it often. Right now they have 56K on them. I will replace these tires this summer some time.

If its curb damage then the inside sidewalks should look "normal". Right?

Your right Gary... . the key here is that the white strip of rubber is only laid into one side of the tire... when you used to have a choice of a red strip or a white strip... . one piece of red and one piece of white was laid into the tire... one on each side... I know that for some of you younger guys... you won't remember the narrow red strip tires... or the turbine white used at the same time... . geez, does that date me... Once the tire comes out of the mold, its inflated on a mandrel and the strip or raised white letters are buffed so that the color appears...

Welcome to the club... I did a post in 8-2012 “OME BF Goodrich Junk” Tires 6 years old 50% rubber still there. Tried to make the point these tires have a problem. NEED to keep an eye on them. They are rotting on the sides. Took a lot of flak from some who felt tires were to old.

I thought the first 2 numbers were for the week of the year? For tires made this week---1913?

The first two numbers are the week of the year. Last two numbers are the year, so tires made today will say 2013. 20th week of 2013.

Yeah, you guys are correct about the date code. The first two digits are week not month as I stated. Hadn't thought about the DOT date code for some time and my feeble memory failed.

I have that stuff also, plus my flexi allen wrench to set points on a 350 chevy by ear... ... ... at 5,000 rpm.

I still have drum brake pliers and one of them pin cap pusher backer things for the geezees retainers on drum brakes.



I'm trying to picture a member of ahem "todays techs" trying to figure out what the little notch in a full size wheel cover is for or how come the gas filler hole is so big on a 1973 car. Let alone an old push the gas pedal choke or on my parents 1963 Galaxie the hand choke.



This could be a new thread, but I bet its been done already, I'll just watch it on YouYube.

Off topic, but I know what you mean Gary. You should see the gas station guys look for the filler cap on my 70 model GTX.

Uh, you have gas station guys? What's that?



I pumped gas back when the oil embargo hit, had to block the pumps with your personal car after the quota for the day was pumped, but they wanted to keep the bays open and sell those Atlas snow tires, can we stud those for you too before we put them on?

We still have a couple places that pump the gass for you. I worked at a gas station as a 14 year old, had a guy stop with a 57 chevy, he laughed while I tried to find the gas cap. That was early 70's.
