OK Guys... . I'm in Oregon... by Oregon Law you can't pump you own gasoline so there is an attendant to do that for you... but you can pump your own diesel... so yesterday I pull into an open pump and get started with diesel. . the guy sees me and nods... There must have been 12 to 14 pumps, at least 10 cars, and 1 guy buying diesel (me) I was in and out... . 30 gallons before some of the cars got waited on... after all there was only one guy on the gas island...

I have that stuff also, plus my flexi allen wrench to set points on a 350 chevy by ear... ... ... at 5,000 rpm.

Getting old... ... .

My latest tire crayons are neon green, btw. Gotta' keep up with the times. . :D

Mike.
Mike, a "mechanic" nearly ruined my '74 C60 Chevy's 350 setting the points by sound. It has a different sound than a car/light truck 350 as it pulls strong from 1200 to 33/3400 rpm and then "signs off". Needless to say, I haven't been back on his yard since. Later on, when I converted it to hei, the parts house gave me the wrong Accel distributor (or either the the wrong distrubutor in the right box) and had torment for a long time trying to get it right. A old drag racer/hot rodder/mechanic found the trouble with the (wrong) advance in just a few minutes, measured off 30 degrees on the balancer and I bumped the starter until he lined it up, and it was perfect! Quite a contrast between a real "wrench" and "what the computer says"!! Mark

The C60 was probably hitting the governor at that point. He should have caught that. A lot of people don't realize there are many differences between a gasser for a car versus a gasser for commercial duty, carbs and timing advance being two of them.

We hauled gravel with 10 wheeler Chevys that had 366 and 427 big block power. First thing to go was the governor, then you could turn them between 4500and 5000 rpm to work with the two stick 5 and 4 trannys.

Once the governor was history you could set the points at 5000rpm. Back when I could really work a twin stick I over took many 250 Cummins powered trucks carrying the same load as my 427.

500rpm loss or gain during a loaded shift if you moved the stick with authority.

75 gallons of gas per day at least... ... four barrells open all day long and cherry bombs exiting just beyond the back of the cab... ..... What???

Man, that was truckin'... ..... :D

Now I have hearing loss and sore joints from doing that sort of thing..... was still fun wringing every ounce of power out of those under-powered old trucks.

Mike,

That was my laugh of the morning.

I still have drum brake pliers and one of them pin cap pusher backer things for the geezees retainers on drum brakes.

I have a pair from my father that I use on my 68 Firebird that has 4 wheel non-power drum brakes! And no power steering. LOL

Well guys i chanced it and won. I pulled a 20ft boat and a quad in the bed 580 miles. I looked at the code on the tires and they are from 07. . I am going to be looking at purchasing a new set here soon. Its just amazing how much these tire places want for a set of 4... !!

Guys, I bought this truck about 6 months ago. Im guessing that these are the 2nd set of tires on her. The previous owner must have loved gravel roads because the tread is pretty rough, although tread depth seems good its just that these tires have been on gravel a lot. I noticed after i washed my truck today that the sidewall rubber is coming off on all 4 but this one is the worst (pass. rear) . . has anyone else had this happen? Am I on borrowed time with these? I have a trip next week pulling a 20ft boat 550 miles. .
My 05's stock BFGs did the same thing around 60k and they still had usable tread left. All of them did it. The back side of the tire had cracking, less severe than on the front side, but it was there. Seems more like ozone/UV light degrading the rubber thing and/or a bad batch of rubber and/or a Michigan thing.

Since moving to Michigan in 05, all our vehicles are needing way more upkeep due to corrosion. Stupid things one never expects to change like oil pans, coolant tubes, unit bearings, rim bead seats, etc. No brand of ujoint will last more then 50K in the Ram and most don’t make it that far. We also had a vehicle with top of the line Michelins have massive tread cracking after several years of being parked most of the time. First time we’ve ever had that happen. I’ve wondered if it is tied to the ice melt and dust suppression they use on the roads here. Maybe it also affects the tires? Shrug.

One of the originals on my '04 did that, but it was almost 10 years old & had 45,000 miles on it. 25,000 of the miles were towing my 5th wheel.
