BFG and Goodyear latest opinions?

This has been beat up pretty good, but, Goodyear AT/S is a new design so I wanted to see if those that are using them are satisfied with the tread wear so far. I have pretty much settled on the BFG'S AT 285 75 r16's but really like the tread pattern of the Goodyear. The Goodyear I believe comes in 30. 5 not 285, does that sound correct? How about tire rub? (See sig. I am as high as stock gets) All who use (and swear by) the BFG's say they are very long lasting and at these prices that is very important. Who has alot of miles on the AT/S, how many, and what do you think now?

Go with BFG...

I have have used BFG A/T's on my rigs for years and will not use any other brand. IMHO, they have a better tread design, are more durable, and last longer than many of the other brands. My dad had Goodyears on his GMC Subhuman and they lasted just over 40,000mi and he's NOT an agressive driver. I had BFG A/T's on my '95 Jeep Wrangker and they were replaced with just shy of 70k on them.

So if the goodyear only comes in 30. 5 then I say NO, assuming your looking for something in the 285 range.

BFG..

Stay with BFG they balance, last 50,000 normal driving, smooth ride, 3 ply sidewall, hold up great to the weight of our trucks. I ran the 305/70R16 (=33") At/S on my truck and they were a very soft tread, did not handle the weight, fast wearing, good traction in the wet, unhappy with tire fom the start. I then went to the Goodyear MT/R great traction for a mud tire, cool tread design, handled the weight good, the did everything I would expect from an all terrain but they could not balance them (vibrate enough to drive you crazy). I went back to BFG and my truck feels like new again. Sam

The Goodyears do come in a 285/75R16.



I was really interested in the Goodyear ATS as well, but after reading quite a few negative post here on the TDR about these tires, I am no longer considering a set of them.



If you are choosing between the two, the BFG's seem like the better way to go, IMO.

Goodyear is crap!

I have a set of the goodyears and I have never had a more difficult time balancing a set of tires in my life. They still aren't right, but I can live with them. Of course since I don't like the tires, they are wearing very well. Seems like they'll last forever.



I'd go with the BFG's for sure.

BFGs

I have had BFGs on my last two dodges. They were loaded near max gvw 95% of the time. I usually got around 50,000 miles on the 285s. I have been very happy with the highway performance. The dealer tells me that the new all terrains roll 15% to 20% easier than the older akk terrains! They seem to ride better than the goodyears and last lots longer IMHO. If you want to try something differnt try the BFG 305s A bit larger tire and a cool look in the big fenderwells of the dodge.

Just as I suspected, Goodyear hasn't changed a bit. It is weird when you have been brand loyal for your whole life that even knowing these things it is still difficult to go to another brand you have never tried before. Thank god for the TDR. I will go with the BFG'S and have them siped at discount tires. What is a good price for a set, mounted and balanced?? Also, do you think 305's will clear enough to run my heavy duty snow/mud chains?? I do have the snowplow prep and camper pkg. so it is a little hight than without. I would hate to buy them and then have rub and scuff marks everywhere and a lift kit is out of the question.

BFG AT's don't come in 305's. They do have a 295 that is a little taller than the 285, and 315's which are about 35" tall.



Given the options, I'd stick with the 285's.

You can get the 305/70r16's in the new BFG M/T km's that just came out. I'm thinkin about getting a set.



My 295's have been running great and fill the wheel wells real well (check my sig) They are a little tall for 3. 54 ratio though.



We'll see how they run after my DTT 89% TC goes in

stay away from Pirelli scorpion. don't see that they have been mentioned in this thread--loved the tread, traction and looks, BUT the best i can tell they can't make round tires. after going thru 8 tires trying to get 4 round ones, unsuccessfully, i gave up and bounced til i sold the truck.

I believe the BFG's to have a better tread for snow. However, that probably isn't as much an issue in CA. I tend to believe they are a "tougher" tire. Look at what the off-road racers (and Hummers) are using. I'm not sure of the load ratings on the Goodyears, but the BFG's are quite a bit higher than the stock tires.



I do recommend the BFG's, but strongly suggest you go with the 295's. They fit fine (without rubbing) and look a little better (still not too extreme) than the 285's. Also, the diameter versus stock (mine had 245's) worked out to be almost exactly 10% bigger. I have not re-calibrated my speedometer, but I easily know I am going 10% faster that it reads. (showing 50 is really 55, showing 70 is really 77).

Well Boonsur, last winter we got 36" of snow in three days and had more snow in the Southern California mountains than they had in the Rockies. Not typical but it does happen. I went with the BFG's T/A All terrains in the 285 size. The 295's were a week away on a special order, and while I have time to wait now, I may not if I needed a replacement out in the boondocks somewhere. The next size were315's and that just wouldnt fit. These will give me time to save for my 19. 5's and a few mods to keep them turning. Thanks to everyone that took the time to give a little input. Everyones advice was taken into careful consideration and I was able to feel confident in my buying decision, and that is very rare these days.

I just got a quote from Costco for the 285's in the new mud terrain km's. $169 each installed.

I have 36k on my AT KO's and looks for 15k more. I mount and balance my own tires and when I did these one would not balance with out 6oz's. For a truck tire I guess it's not much but I had three perfect ones to compare to. The others were at . 5 to 1 oz. Went thru 3 more until I got another low weight one. Never seen this with BFG but all's good now.
