It would seem that the filter is so close to the hood opening that water may get into it from the front hood seal. That worries me a little.

I just installed mine. I feel better about this filter than the K&N. I think dirt does get through. At least on mine it was. The filter does get pretty warm that close to the turbo. I pulled my trailer home from work today, about twenty five miles, had it running pretty hot. As soon as I stopped, I hopped out and checked the filter to see how hot it got. I could almost, but not quite hold my hand on the closest part near the turbo, the black end cap was getting hotter than the metal mesh. Anyway, I am looking forward to more feedback from everyone else on the longer term use of this filter. Thanks Moparguy.

Heat Shield

For a temporary quickie-fix (until I can build an aluminium/insulated box) I found an old lisence plate on the shelf in the back of the garage and tie-wrapped it to the nozzle-end of the filter, closest to the turbo... . rounded to the countour of the filter... . this is just back-yard engineering, and temporary. Might prevent melted plastic or a even a fire!

for those concerned about the water thing

I was kinda worried about the water thing, too. The first time I washed it, I was gonna wrap a plastic bag around it, just to be safe. Well, I forgot all about the air filter the other day and ran the truck through the lazer wash, complete with high power undercarriage spray. The next day I remembered the filter and was like I checked it out, if any water did get on it, you couldn't tell it. The filter looked just like the day I put it in. The clamp had worked a little loose, so I guess I will have to reinforce it with the piece of pvc after all.

BHF Installed

Called a bunch of local NAPA shops, no one had one in stock and they all wanted 59. 99 for the filter.



Found one at a local big truck shop near Baltimore, I got the Donaldson filter for $45. 00 out the door. Turns out the guy who used to own the shop, Earl, has been running that filter on his 1996 CTD for more than a few years. He is retired now and a full time RV'er. He pulls a 5th wheel with a Diesel Injection of Pittsburgh tuned 12V. His son said he is in CO now.



The filter is a tight fit, I am going to fabricate a heat shield/mount as soon as I have time. EGT's are down across the board, boost builds quicker and I am seeing 2lbs more at WOT. Love to hear that HX sing.

I'll be picking one up soon, and can do a comparison with the re-0880. I would love to see EGT's come down more. Yesterday it was 113F and 40% humidity. Yes, it was hot!

Installed my Moparguy Filter last night. Napa fumbled with my order for over a week trying to get one from Boise first, then Kansas City. $50 - ouch, next time I'll shop around.



This is the first mod in my otherwise stock truck, so egt or boost changes are barely perceptible but "seem to be" improved by a hair. I can put the boost at 20 now, whereas before it was always just shy of that. And running empty around town I'm not able to get the egts up above 1300 now, even on a WOT uphill run. Previously I could hit the "red zone" on a local uphill run I drive. The better indicator is a change in 1/4 mile according to the GtechPro. Previous average runs were 18. 5 seconds at 80mph. Now average is at 18. 0 seconds at 81 mph. This is at 5000 feet elev and outside temp of 80 deg.



Now I can finally enjoy the absence of the silencer ring!



Next up - 4" exhaust from turbo to tail.

Years ago I was driving a FORD dump building roads, mostly very dusty conditions. Not totally sure but I think the filters were Baldwin and the recomendation was that they could be cleaned three times. We had this air tank with sort of a reverse funnel and a ball valve on it. Not homemade either. You would fill the tank, set the filter on the floor, place the funnel on the filter and put your weight on the tank to hold it down and open the valve. Whoosh and then hold your breath while the dust settled. I think it be prudent to just throw the filter and buy new.



Anyway, picked my "moparguy" filter up today but decided to hold off on the install because I have been tweaking my AFC this week. I don't like to change to much at once. I am going to take some measurement and see if one of the "tinknockers" at work can help out with some shielding or a box. I am thinking on some kind of "Pyschotty" theme.

I just got mine installed today. I made a heat shield for it out of stainless and heat treat furnace insulation. On a thirty mile trip today I made a few observations:



1. Turbo lag is definitely reduced.



2. My max EGT went from 1225 to 1100 WOT unloaded.



3. The filter was fairly cool to the touch after the test drive.

Filter cleaning

at work we clean our filters once then throw out our filter warehouse 'washes' them for us. most of our cats use prefilters,but we only replace them every 2000 hours and the outers every 400 hours. reason only wash once then throw out because to much fines in filters.

Is anyone making or planning to make a good filterbox for the "Moparguy" filter? If someone is planning on producing them I would very much be interested in purchasing one. (Personally I think a Psychotty style "Moparguy" filter would be a good idea).

Think I'll pass on the kiss but yes, these guys are great. Wonder why the price varies so much?

There's not a lot of room around these filters to enclose them. I got mine in today, and it is BIG.



I called Napa and it would be 50 bucks. I tried some other places and struck out. Then called Fleetguard (800 22FILTER i think) and they sent me to their local distributor. They had one downstate and got it to me the next day. (34 bucks, woo hoo)



The icing on the cake was that this company has a big barbeque/picnic on the 2nd fri. of the month. My 3 yr old son and I showed up at lunchtime on got the royal treatment. Burgers, chips, pop, and hats! (nice ones)

I put my filter in today with just a piece of foam laying on the fender to cushion it. I am impressed to say the least. I noticed an overall increase in responsiveness immediately. My EGT's were 900 going over a hill at 70 mph empty where I would usually be up at 11 or 1200.



I rounded up some empty five and six gallion buckets. Some are large enough in diameter for the filter to go all the way in but certainly would be restrictive in whole. My plan is to cut a round hole in the bottom for the filter outlet and then maybe a third or so off the side away from the engine. What with the size limitations, I think the filter will do better not enclosed but shielded from the turbo heat. If I start seeing positive results then I can think about going to an aluminum shield.

got in a rain storm today

Got caught in a pretty good rain storm today. I was a little worried about my unshielded "BHF" in there. I splashed through some big areas of water (the streets were running over). When I got home I popped the hood and checked, it was as dry as could be I'm not going to worry about making a box for mine, think I'll just let it hang under there like it is, at least for now. Now, a ram air set up for it, hmmmm... ...

Fleetgard!

Great fleetgard dealer in town. $31. Cheep enough to seem what it does.



I would guess this will eliminate the plugged filters from busting snowbanks I have experienced several times. Stock box filters have a solid block of ice form over them.
