Howes Diesel Treatment

wet pavement driving!

A UPS van pulled up today with what sounded like a mini Cummins in it. I convinced him to open the hood and there was a 4 cylinder, aluminum head, turbo charged diesel that had F**D written all over it. He said it had lots of spunk. WTF? Why cant some one put an engine like that in a Dakota??? Hello!!

I'm sure they can, but they don't want to!!

EPA = eliminate patroleum altogether.

When us shade tree types can do it, so can the engineers.

Sorry if I offended the mechanical skills of anyone!!!

turbo ranger?

I thought f**d did that with the '85 or '86 ranger, didnt they? I'll have to ask my buddy, he knows the guy that had it... a ranger with a little turbo diesel. I'll find out and repost later.

Detroit Diesel, a part I believe of CD, developed a nifty little light duty V6 called the Delta. The test mules were Dakota's. Should be a piece of cake to roll those out the door. IIR the EPA cycle was something like 25 and 30. The specs of the Delta are on the Detroit Diesel web site.

Diesel engines

Every time I see you talking about diesel engines makes me wonder. How is it that you don't have diesel engines over there?? Well almost.

Just for an example. Ford (European) builds very good diesel engines over here. I have an 1. 6L Ford diesel engine in my sailing boat. That thing has now arround 4000 hours on it, all I do to that engine is to change the oil and filter every 150 hours...

Never had a problem with that engine.

Makes me wonder if the big three think there ain't no market for diesel engines in the States...

It May Happen

I read an article not too long ago in one of the car magazines that made me think that we may actually see diesel engines a lot more frequently in the near future. It basically went by the success of the new VW diesel bugs and Jettas with (I think) a 1. 6L in them. The article mentioned that with Washigton DC trying like hell to make those of us with SUV's live up to the same CAFE standards of a Yugo, that diesels may be the answer. It said that the Bug is seeing 50 MPG, and that new diesel technology, no matter how much HP it robs those of us that care about it, makes it possible for these little engines to run forever with great mileage as cleanly as a gasser. I'd love to see it happen so I can get Wifey that little Dakota Crew Cab she likes. Time will tell.

ReggieRam,

The VW diesel imported into the North American market is a 90HP 1. 9 liter that puts out about 150 foot pounds of torque. This ain't your father's diesel. They scoot right along and deliver terrific mileage. Wife has a Jetta with the diesel, she thought Moby Truck needed some kin in the driveway.

Here's the sad part, VW cannot import the 110, 115, 130 and 150 HP versions due to primarily our crappy fuel and secondarily our out of kilter EPA prescriptions for clean air and prosperous oil companies. I drove a 130HP Golf with a 5 speed last time I was in Europe... WOW! I guess the 150HP with the new 6 speed is really incredible. Oh, they are all OK with biodiesel right out of the factory.

You will have another SUV with a diesel engine in it for the '03 model year. Ford is putting a V6 PSD in the Expedition, and will follow that with the same engine in the entire F150 line. They already have the V8 PSD in the Excursion. There is also some speculation that the V6 PSD will fit in the explorer sized vehicles and Ford is considering a diesel in that market. Seems to me that Ford is embracing the diesel, and GM and DC are looking at it as a necessary evil in the truck market and giving it no consideration anywhere else.

I seemed to recall reading not too long ago that Dodge does have a 4cyl diesel in Dakoda's. Just not in this country. But very popular in the rest of the world where 1/3 the population drives diesels.

in europe you can get the new JEEP liberty with a 4cyl MB diesel.

why cant we get them here? i think those things are cute little buggers.

i'd buy one too, if i could get a diesel.

makes me want to move to another country!!!!   #@$%! I just dont understand why the us. has to have its head up its a$$ ,Jim

Diesel engines

Your'e wrong, diesel engines have a market arround 51% here in Europe, so it is in most parts of the world.

And yes, any Jeep can be had with a Diesel engine here... .

I'd say more, if a MFR does not offer a diesel engine for a car/truck/van/suv they will not sell that product here.

Diesel rules!

How much?

Well folks good diesel also costs. The average price per liter in europe is a hunk more than our crappy diesel by the gallon here. We have made leaps and bounds in low sulfer technology just in the last two years. I believe F**d is coming out with a small diesel in the Ranger next year. According to F**d salesman it will be a Cummins? Sooner or later EPA and the greenies will have to open there eyes to the facts and see that diesel is the most efficent power out there.

diesels

my OWMBO is still looking at new wheels. she doesn't like the size of the Vdub Jetta, or it would be a simple decision. the little rascal with the 1. 9 TDI scoots right out and is fun to drive with 50 MPG. i made a half hearted attemp to figure out how to import a Passat with a diesel. it appears ther is no way. BUMMER!!! on the brighter side, she's kinda in love with the New Beetle. she's still talkin' about a new TDI beetle, and keep her Q45. i've got my fingers crossed. i think we'll see mercedes and VW both bring more diesels into this country in the next coupla years. maybe that'll stimulate DC, F**d and GM to move into the 21st century.
