What about the Edelbrock IAS Performer? I have a set on my 1984 F150 and they are great. There is a fit for G3 Dodges. Has anyone tried them?

Bilstein all the way... Actually, any high pressure gas shock is the point I'm trying to make. .

I would suggest staying away from any NON monotube shock... These trucks are just way too heavy to use anything else. .

If you decide to get anything but a high pressure monotube, just get the cheap off the shelf "rancho-monroe-gabriel" etc... They are all pretty much the same. .

A high pressure mono-tube gas shock would be considered and upgrade, anything else is no better than stock...

"rancho-monroe-gabriel"

So you are saying that the Ranchos are a cheap off the shelf shock? I was under the impression that the Ranchos were pretty good. I had to replace all four on my 03 within the first 6 months and they really stiffend out the ride. :)

I had the non adjustable Ranchos. I haven't had to replace the shocks in my 05 yet. That might be the next project.

Not trying to insult anyone but yeah, they are basically all the same...

Rancho has great marketing and all to make them seem they are better, but if you actually cut the shock open, they look 90% identical to any "twin-tube" shock bought for $20 at the local parts store...

The valving may be a "bit" different but with proper valving for an 8000lb truck, they'll usually last as long as stock shocks and not much more if at all...

Most important, a twin tube low pressure shock can not properly control an 8000lb truck...

Just my opinions FWIW. .

Hello to all!

I am a new member of TDR as of a few days ago. So far I have been impressed by the website for information. Especially on the TSB part. Anyways. Here is my question regarding the two shocks you all are discussing. How long do the average shocks last for? Particularly the stocks ones from Dodge? And then what you all recommend for shocks w/ putting a 870 lb. plow on the front end? Thanks in advance for the replies.

Mike

Some info. you probably need to know, if your going to suggest the type of shocks I need.

-2001 Quad Cab, long box, H. O. 6 speed

-Front end: 4375 lbs.

-Rear end: A little over 3000 lbs.

My factory shocks have 8000 miles on them, they already feel weak. I mean when you cross a speed bump the truck will bounce 4 or 5 times. I had a set of Bilstiens on my 98. They had 60K miles on them when I traded the truck in on a new 2002. On the way home in the 2002 the first thing I noticed was "man these factory shocks sux". Now I have an 06 and the factory shocks are no better then they were in 98 and 2002.

As far as a plow, the springs carry the plow weight, not the shock. all the shock does is slow down the spring from moving. Bilstein shocks are great, you will not be sorry. Show around for price, I have seen somewhere in the $60. 00 to over $100. 00 each.

Ok, so with that question answereed on what shocks to possibly get, how about springs? More specifically what would you guys recommend for springs w/ having a plow on the front end? I was looking through Rancho's website, and saw some springs for my year truck, but I have no idea what they are rated for. How do you go about figuring that out? And hopfully last question is, would you guys recommend timbrens or air suspension?
