I think every air passenger should be issued a small-caliber pistol, if they wish to have one, for the duration of the flight. If even 30% of the passengers had been armed, the hijackers would be dead.

But no. In the name of control, weapons are banned from aircraft. Thus, only criminals, those with criminal intent, and a very few flying police officers are armed. Thus, 50-350 people are doomed to be victims every time a plane is hijacked. All because pansy liberal are terrified of their own dark sides, and feel compelled to control everyone else because *someone* might succumb to his internal evil.

But, I know what the result will be. More government control of private property. More so-called arms will be banned, so that even *fewer* citizens will be able to defend themselves. As I've said before, we seem to be approaching the no-return point on the slope to fascism; we reached socialism a long time ago.

It's all about power and control. And until we, the people of the world, have had enough, the loud-mouthed bullies of the world (which includes far too many of our own politicians) will continue to have their way. These bullies need to be put down. Or knocked down. Or slammed into yesterday or tomorrow. Whatever it takes so they realize we will *not* tolerate being pushed around any more.

I have not watched these Anti gunners for a long long time. The press can be a big PITA and slant everything the way they want it to look. I am giving George all my support now and in the future.

As for Air Marshals, and restricted freedom. Before there were Air Marshals, the President ordered the U. S. flights be accompanied by U. S. Marines. They were armed and ready for whatever might happen. 1 per plane if my memory serves correct with a . 45 I think. The threat went away, Air Marshals were "made" and the rest is history. Lets go back in history. Back in the 1920's and 30's as well, the U. S mail system was being busted into on the streets. Checks were being stole, money was coming up missing etc. , a time when the Postal Service was to America business what the Internet is today. Again the President called on U. S. Marines to guard all mailboxes with loaded shotguns. Each time this was done, the stealing stopped.

There have been several other times the Marines have been called upon by the President to protect things inside our own borders. One of the talk show people today stated the military has never been used as police in America. As you can see from the above that statement is false. The President can call upon the Marine Corps to do anything inside our borders he wants without consent from any Congressperson more or less. My point is this. Despite what the devils advocates are saying about using the military as "police" on our own grounds as being a bad idea... it is not a bad idea, these are our own kids, neighbors and friends who are in the military... AMERICANS. It has been done in the past with great success, and can work again without any fears of the twilight zone becoming reality. Semper Fi.

Let's see... how many of these folks who elect to be issued their sidearm for the trip have ever actually used one before but would take one to be a potential hero? How good do you think their marksmanship is? How about in an adreneline fueled reaction to an incident? So, what do you suppose happens in a pressurized tube at about 35,000' when a small hole gets shot in the pressure vessel? A window? Emergency escape door? Hmmmm... . rapid decompression maybe? Or worse, maybe a slow decompression that no one notices until it's too late and everyone's unconcious. The silver lining is that the terrorist's target gets away... probably. But what would the plane hit? Maybe nothing. Remember Payne Stewart?

I hate to flame folks for venting, but c'mon, issue guns to passengers? YGTBSM!!

super idea

chad -- i'm with ya on this one. i'm not a marine but gave it some serious thought many years ago. sometimes i kick myself for not joining. but i LIKE your idea. i have NO problem with someone armed in uniform on my plane. maybe use two per plane tho'.

of course this would be an incredible number of personnel. after watching the radar tracking shots on the news of a normal night over the U. S. i couldn't start to comprehend the number of planes.

as for the gov't taking my freedoms? hell, its a extremely small price to pay. what's my freedom? getting my sorry FAT a$$ somewhere safe!!!

Boss

My boss had a good idea(for once). Put real doors for the pilots(thick baby)and a button on the joy stick(not that one). One sign of highjackers and push the button. Sleeping gas the whole plane except for the pilots. They land at the nearest airport and carry our sleepy headed highjackers off to wake up with some serious bruises on their heads. The rest of the passengers wake up with a cup of coffee and a croisant!:p

I agree with the comment that we all need to stand behind Bush. I voted for him and would have done so anyway. Lhotka, face facts: Liberals have exercised the policy of appeasement for years. What did we get in return? One crater and a 5 story pile of rubble in lower Manhattan!!! Thousands, maybe tens of thousands dead!!! Sorry pal, this is one American who is tired of appeasement with the hope that they will see the light. They will understand one thing: Direct, violent and deadly force!!! Our intelligence community has been gutted by every president since Jimmy Carter, with Ronald Reagan being the lone exception. Clinton just happened to be the last of the lot and his response to these terrorists was selfish in nature, i. e. ; it kept Monica Lewinsky's testimony off of the front page. George W. inherited a problem that has been brewing since the mid 70's and I hate to say it, but it may not have been resolved had it not been for this disaster. Unfortunately, this is what it seems to take to wake us Americans up. It's time to move forward with conviction and resolve. This will not be an easy fight, nor a bloodless one, but it is a fight that must be engaged. This was just a shot across the bow. A warning as it were. When these people get nukes or a biological weapon, do you think they will hesitate to use it? If we don't engage this fight now, we are inviting death and destruction on a much larger scale. This fight was brought to our shores and not by our invitation, but it is here and things will never be the same. While we fight this scourge against our freedoms and our way of life, we must ensure that we don't emasculate ourselves from within. There are far to many people in this country that want to be safe and are willing to go to just about any length to ensure it. This is neither wise nor safe. Let's not give up our freedoms through the process of defending them. That would bring dishonor to the victims of Tuesday's attack and to all of the men and women who have died defending our country in the past.

As to Peter Jennings: Are any of you surprised? The guy is a first rate elitist snob. An arrogant and condescending one at that. He was right in character, doing what he did. He should be chastised and ignored, which is what I did by watching CNN and the Fox News Channel.

ABSOLUTE GUN CONTROL.

That is what we have on planes. Look at what happened.

Now, guns are a bad thing on a plane, but there can be bullets made not to penatrate the shell.

I like the gas idea, but gas masks would be smuggled aboard, then you have sleeping passengers to kill at will!

I agree about the military on the flights. Thousands of them are lounging around in barracks most of the time getting paid.

It would be good anti/terroist training for them.

Harry Truman

At or near the end of his term in office, Harry Truman said (I won't remember the words exactly, but in general in referring to the twisting of the real news by the media) -I pity the millions of Americans who read their daily newspaper and listen to the radio news and thereby think they have some idea of what is going on in government.

It is far worse today. The major media is about selling advertizing and pushing the media (liberal) agenda. If Harry Truman were alive today he would REALLY feel sorry for us.

As a Judge, I was many times interviewed by local media people and would then watch the evening TV news, read the paper or listen to the radio and on hearing the "interview" material, be flabergasted at how they had cut and edited it and worked it into a story to express vews quite different than what I had intended.

After a few years I simply refused to give an interview unless it was live-----that allmost never happens.

Do NOT follow the major media -especially the likes of jennings, dan blather or brokaw, and think you are getting a straight story!

Remember the 60 minutes story about the rotten things a food chain in the south was doing with re-dating out dated meat and such? Then when the food chain got them into federal court where they could get ahold of 60 minutes records, it turned out that these supposed employees were in fact employes of 60 min. sent there to get jobs so they could do these things for filming.

Far more accurate and helpfull real news comes from the outside the main stream news. Yes, from people like Savage, Limbaugh, and Mike Reagan.

...off on another tangent!....CFs Avatar..

Like they say at Ft. Riley..... "If you're gonna be one, be a Big Red one!" :)

John Berger,

I think it is sick how many posters here have tried to blame various persons for this incident. This is a time to back our President and leadership regardless of political affiliation.

Why not blame the Wright brothers? They invented the airplane didn't they? See how stupid it sounds to place blame on a particular person during this time of need?

What is it with this myth of sudden cabin depressurization? Hollywierd is my guess. Does any remember the 747 out of Hawaii that had about 150 sg. ft. of the top of the cabin blow off in one big hunk at something like 30K ft? There were several UNBELTED passangers who were lost but the plane landed safely.

Do you honestly think a . 45 caliber hole through the aluminum is going to bring down a 747?

As for no one noticing that the O2 level is dropping due to a hole that no one noticed being shot through the fuslage from the inside, I would be shocked if there were not O2 and pressure sensors (along with redundant ones) to maintain O2 levels.

As for filling a plane full of say NO2 don't know for sure, but I would bet dosage is directly related to body mass and genetics. IE what knocks you out dead might not faze the guy next seat over. Think alcohol tolerance.

What?

Savage,Limbaugh and Regan?Yeap, thats some real news. Out of text, right wing, conservative, sensationist, out for ratings bull. Thats what America needs right now MORE partism and critisism!!!!!!You have to be a little paranoid to think all of the regular broadcasting is picking on the president or for that matter the conservatives. Comon folks lets get real here. Any one who disagrees with your veiw is a liberal?

Re: Now that's just a dandy idea....

joel,

You are not thinking clearly. On the A/C Carrier USS Ranger,we had planes return shot to pieces and none of them exploded like you see in the movies. Even if what you say is true and you had some ill trained trigger happy passengers on board, would'nt you rather have that situation than than what they had on those four planes Tuesday?;)

This Peter Jennings you speak of? is he important?? Is he Lowell Thomas of his time or just another 'talking head' (HE HE HE). Mebbe he's a government operative secretly trying to build Osama's already dangerously inflated ego to get him careless - naw, this IS PJ we're talkin' about!!;)

Yup, some one should "get real" and its those who do not yet realize that the major media has a VERY liberal axe to grind that transends their interest in the news. . , and results in their reporting being first aimed at shaping and controlling the masses.

Why is it do you suppose that Limbaugh has more listeners on any one day than the three major network news programs combined?

Many people have wised up to the media----some are still led around by the nose by the likes of jennings.

I will never forget the first time I head Rush---driving back from a medical trip to San Diego and having trouble staying awake and having trouble finding anything on the radio. Happened to tune him in and listened because there was nothing else. After a few minutes, I looked over at my wife and she was looking at me and we both said, "wow, who is this guy, "it was so great to hear someone saying what we have been saying to each other for years, and thinking we were all alone.

Limbaugh does not have followers, he simply speaks for those of us who do not march lockstep to the poisoned slant of the leftest media.

Yes get real!!!!

It takes all kinds. I buy a Soldier of Fortune magazine about once a year just to see what is really going on in other parts of the World. Its shocking to see the bloodshed. Woman, children, old men. Things that are hard to believe are going on because we dont hear about it, or see pictures on the evening news because they are in parts of the World where we as Americans have no $$$ interest. I must admit, even me... Mr. Radical, wrote some of the editors of that magazine off as wack-o's with some of their Nastradamis like predictions of how we (USA) would be getting hit big time by terrorist in the near future, or how these small "cells" operating in mountains across vast oceans could reach into the heartland's of America with mass weapons of destruction and kill thousands of people.

The issue I got this year was the July issue. It had an article in it about terrorism, and laid out all the cards. It listed all the incidents that had happened over the past 10-15 years that involved Americans, then listed what came of them. Very shocking considering the evidence that pointed to specific individuals, "cells" and even Countries.

The Author of the article made a good point with the Lockerbe Scotland jet bombing. The accused guy was tried in a World Court, found guilty and got the equivalent of 2 weeks or 2 months (cant remember) in jail for every human life taken. Col. Kadafi cried foul play because his boy that carried out his orders on this went to jail. the Author points out Kadafi is a "dick"tator, a. k. a. control freak. No one makes a move without his consent in Libya. You know good and well he made this happen, probably retaliation for Pres. Reagan putting a bomb down his chimney and killing his offspring... which was a direct punishment for another terrorist attack by Libya on our military at night club if I remember correctly.

In closing on this, the people most of us listed as radicals before, we are embracing as the smart guys now. The people who were middle of the road before all of this have now been shifted to the left just a bit, and the people we called liberals before are being called every name in the book. After re-reading that magazine over Friday afternoon, I became convinced that alot of those guys are right, have been right, and deservingly so shouldn't be labeled as doomsdayers or wack-o's like they have been. That doesn't only apply to the S. O. F. type people, but the Colin Powels, George Bush's, Dick Chenny's, Ronald Reagans and other "right wingers"(there are so many) who have been preaching defense of America for years. I doubt there is an American out there who is worried our current team of leaders wont do anything about this. If anything, there might be a few starting to rear their heads saying we are going to go too far.

Just as long as the majority of America believes in their leaders, we as a whole will be fine regardless of what the media says. Lets hope that the media doesn't do what they did during Viet Nam. Every week there was a reporter on the news at the airports standing among the silver flag draped caskets asking "does America need to be fighting this war?". After a while, regardless of what the reasons were we were fighting for, the majority of people started repeating the media asking if we should be there. I hope and pray that doesn't happen when our Marines, Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen start coming home in those familiar silver caskets. I am sure there will be a few asking "do we need to be fighting this war" on the evening news. I hope Americas answer is much different this time, like it has never been before. If you recall, even during Desert Storm, once casualties started coming in, the critics took to the airwaves and television screens. Luckily it was over before too many died, and before too many changed their point of view.

Chad,

I never thought you were radical, what does that say about me?

Is there anyway you could post those terroist hits out of the mag?

Any time an idiot reporter asks if we should be going after these guys, we should all e-mail him/her pictures of the WTC and Pentagon.

Time to let the media know that we want the news reported, not invented.

I have fely for years it was a matter of time before something big happened here. We better shut them down, before they do something REALLY bad.

Bill Clinton deserves a disproportionate share of the blame in this disaster because he played politics with cruise missiles, while putting the finishing touches on the gutting of our intelligence gathering capabilities. Those aforementioned cruise missiles were the death grip upon many innocent civilians working in an aspirin factory. That did and still does sicken me. I saw this coming 12 years ago whilst I was still a USN reservist, when after Desert Storm the call for downsizing and consolidation hit the ground running. After the wall came down in Berlin, the media and others started getting de-classified information on how we had conducted the Cold War and some of the characters and methods we had utilized to execute that war. As this was going on, we put a man in office who was one of the most liberal politicians this side of FDR. He ran his Presidency in like manner. The American public, now with no "conventional" enemy to face down, were revolted by how we had conducted the Cold War. I think, and I am not speaking for myself on this matter, that the public got a large scale case of the guilties over how war's are won and wanted to wash their hands of such things. Problem is, we never really lost an enemy, as much as we had an existing one take top billing, as it were. But our politicians marched on as though we had finally reached that brave new utopian world. If that foolhardy notion still exists after last Tuesday, it most likely will be classified as an endangered species. If anyone who disagrees with me on this issue feels that I am pointing fingers and not rowing with the team... well, that's fine. But it is sheer folly to ignore the mistakes made by politicians and well intentioned (or not) citizens that led to this disaster. If we do that, we are going to be visited by this type of scourge again. Even if we learn from our mistakes, and move forward in a unified and resolute manner, there is no guarantee that we won't have destruction visited upon us again. Which course would you choose? If we don't study the past, we will definitely get lost trying to chart our road through the future. And when a civilization loses it's way because it forgot where it came from, bad things tend to happen to innocent people.
