This morning, I was getting on I-75 going home from work. Speed was about 50 - 55 and slowly rising. No traffic to speak of, so I floored it (this truck is fun). Glanced in the rear view, and I saw black smoke. Backed off on throttle (remember, very little traffic), slowed down to 55 and floored it again. Again, black smoke (not like you would see at a tracker pull, but, black smoke, none-the-less). I have 5200 miles on my rig... drive like an old man, normally. My truck is bone stock. Temp was 81 deg, and humidity was probably 90%. Is it normal for an '05 to produce black smoke? Just curious

Carl.....

Yes, it's normal to a point. Most only see it at night when a car's lights are providing backlight. If it's more than that, then I would check the air filter/intake system for some kind of obstruction.

I'm still running an EZ. Two un answered e-mails to Quad and being put off by Edge has left me that way.

Anyway, late last week we had 90's and humid here in Ohio ... ... ..... smoked like a freight train. One good storm and cold front and she hardly smokes. It's all about the air :D

Thanks, guys. Will check for obstructions tomorrow morning. I had the head rests done by a guy in New York. Those are actually the head rests out of my old '03... could not let them go with the trade, so I just swapped them to the '05. If anyone's intersted, I get the name of the site and post it tomorrow.

BTW: always get my fuel at the local BP station... used them in my '03 and now my '05... never a problem. They are a little more expensive around here, but they do a good business.

So do I, and I'm convinced that's why you're seeing a bit of black smoke. I think soot accumulates in the exhaust system over time and when you do some good high-throttle, high-RPM stuff you blow it all out. I'd bet if you did that several more times the amount of black smoke you saw would dramatically decrease.

Also, as mberry points out, you'll notice that diesel opacity much more at night in headlights... that's normal.

put some of theirs in glass jar and get some from brand name mobil, shell see which is clearer the more yellow the more smoke and soot

sounds like a normal procedure for cleaning out your exhaust system. gotta keep that 4 incher a true 4 inch exhaust, darn soot will build up and lead to restrictions like a clogged artery :-laf
