Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) black soot in garage

I recently noticed a black soot from exhaust building up in our garage. Air filter looks clean... . (AFE stock replacement) the exhaust problem (?) has been in the last few weeks. Winterized fuel? plugged muffler? intercooler blockage?



97 2500 5 speed STOCK 220,000miles

Check the fuel pressure before and after your fuel filter. The lift pump could be tired, the filter could be clogged, and the p-pump overflow valve could be wore out.

Low blinker fluid and dry muffler bearings have been known to cause excessive soot as well.

already checked blinker fluid level and had the muffler bearings lubed... ..... what should my fuel pressure be?

Okay seriously, poor valve adjustment, clogged air cleaner, too much fuel pressure (can't remember the proper setting right now) all can cause excessive soot. Also, you should check all of your intake clamps around the intercooler, turbo, and intake horn. Low boost can cause soot. Another thing to possibly consider could be the EGR valve, but since I have a 95, I don't have an EGR, so I can not comment on that further.



Oh and one more thing, did you use the correct lube on the muffler bearing?

Ballpark: 15-35 PSI, depending on RPM and engine load. You shouldn't see much pressure drop across the filter.

you sure it's not coal dust left over from what Santa Claus brought you ? lol I'll bet that's it. it couldn't be because your putting your foot on the accelerator to start it.

If you have the coin ya can always spring for the Plymovent type system like we use in the firehouse.

Fuel Pressure: 18-24 psi at idle, 28-36 at 2000 rpm with no load.
