The 68RFE has adoption strategy, the Guy who adds 100+hp then takes it out and drives the **** out of it, destroys it almost instantly. You must drive moderately (50+ miles) until it compensates for the additional HP, or else its $$$$ in repairs.

Do you reset the shift tables when you mod one?

Frank, I see the International Dump. How did you do with the air system on that? You made a post about it a while back.

Wayne, I had the truck in for the annual FHWA Inspection and asked the shop to look at and clean/repair the air brake system. They had to replace the "hand prime pump",brake line filter and cleaned out all air lines and tanks. No problems since the repairs (11/5/14). One thing for sure, it gets pretty expensive keeping all this equipment "running"!

Finally had time to replace my salt damaged Turbo yesterday. Went with a Tater built 62/65/12 turbo, took about 4.5 hours to replace. Tryed just removing turbo from manifold, but could not move nut back by block so.... removed the manifold and did the swap on the bench. It's incredible what salt can do over a period of thirteen years!!! The linkage on the waste gate was "welded in place". I could not move it at all!Anyway, turbo sounds great, low whistle coming from turbo and out exhaust. My turbo wheel had no play in it and seemed to be okay. Could not even drive the truck anymore due to all the exhaust fumes getting into the cab!!! The crack in the turbo out let was on the bottom half, where I guess salt could lay there and do it's thing!Hopefully I will get thirteen trouble free years w/ this turbo! I'll try attaching some photos of the new turbo, the old one and the underside of the turbo.Frank

Salt is bad. Calcium Chloride liquid is worse. What you have there is pretty typical at my place. I'm surprised you didn't replace the manifold.

My local shop rebuilt my 48RE w/billet input shaft & "Precision" triple disc TC as the 2 most crucial items for our extended RV towing, 2012 @ 189k miles. I saw another customers' 2-piece input shaft assy. with the typical radial cracks in the main gear splined boss! I agreed with the $700 option. Original symptom was a small oil leak. Leak source was at 3 of the 6 Torque Conv. mounting lugs were tearing away from the TC case!

Trust your efforts are most successful.

FYI-Another Salt related injury hidden from view:

An oil leak at the transmission-Transfer Case joint was found in 2013 @ 226k miles. Disassembly revealed trapped salt corrosion caused a 1/2" hole atop the transfer case front 'cover', in a nice little pocket. Deemed not repairable by local welding expert, so replacement case front was ordered & installed. That was a $1,100 bummer surprise, but better @ home than hills of KY. They primed & painted that area thoroughly to forestall the next occasion!?

RVTRKN is right, the manifold you see is a BD exhaust manifold that I installed about seven years ago. It really only had some minor surface rust on it which I sanded down and gave it and the exhaust down pipe a coat of high temp. paint, they look good for now! I also was tired of replacing oil pans on my trucks. I finally installed a stainless pan in my salter truck (03"dually),from Sno Depot ($742.00!). Hopefully, that is the last pan (#2) I install in that truck! It's been an expensive winter/ early spring for me! Hopefully, will make it all back with a good season!

Yes, organic farmer, I remember posting I couldn't get in touch w/ Austin. He was snowmobling the week I was trying to get him. We finally made contact and he had one at my door within a week! Hopefully, this turbo gives me atleast 6-8 years of trouble free service as the original! Wow, my truck would be 19 plus years old!!! The way the towns around here pretreat the roads before a storm and salt during a storm, the only thing I'll have in six years are the truck tires!!! Thanks and enjoy your new turbo also.Frank:)

Having more transmission problems!!!!(03' w/ 48RE). Was towing dump trailer today with less than four yards of mulch in it (can hold between 10 -12 yards) and the transmission would not shift into second gear!!! Also when I put the truck in reverse it would hesitate and finally start to back up and shake. This is the same truck that had a complete rebuild from Level 10 in Northern New Jersey last January at a tune of $6400.00! The transmission has less than 9,000 miles since the rebuild!!! I phoned the transmission shop and spoke to Pat the owner of Level 10, he said sounds like third gear is going bad. I asked why third gear? He told me that third and reverse work off the same gear and that sounds like the problem. He won't know until he gets his hands on it (he will cover everything!). I need to call a flat bed to get it towed 70 plus miles north of me!Wife has Triple A, hopefully they will be able to take it and save me $300- $400 in towing charges! I'll keep you guys posted.
Frank

Not exactly the same gear, just some of the same components. Reverse is rear band applied direct clutch pack applied, forward clutch pack off. If the direct clutch (3rd gear in a forward scenario) goes bad reverse and drive are both affected. Sounds like the direct clutch pack may have failed. Good that he will cover it.

Just got back home, had a message on answering machine regarding transmission --- "clip broke in valve body that services both third and reverse". N/C, for repairs, truck should be done by lunch time tomorrow. Not bad service the truck got to the transmission shop around 9:30 a.m. this morning and the time that the message was left was 11:30 a.m. Pat the owner had the whole transmission out and just did a quick once over, everything seems to be okay. New trans. oil and filter and she's ready to go. Just wondering how something like this breaks with hardly any hard use on the truck???
Glad to get the truck back so soon.
