my 98 12v NV4500 with 118k miles transfer case went away in a very dramatic style... Driving down the road with no irregular indications. went from mild to a severe vibration and explosion in about 20 seconds, case completely severed. Completely stock drivetrain and not abused? I have been searching all week for a replacement and the cheapest I've found is right around $900. does anyone know where I can get an affordable case?

correct me if i am wrong guys...

NV241 - Passenger Side Drop

NV241 DLD - single chain (if I remember correctly) no PTO and drivers side drop

NV241DHD - Double Chain, PTO, drivers side drop.

Transfercaseexpress.com Good people.

I just messed up my DLD tcase as well:

You may consider a 271 case. . but at least get a 241DHD.

i believe there is one in our classidieds here, for around 400 ;)

just search "241" in the classifieds

Doesn't the DHD require a shorter driveshaft? How about mounts? What all is different to make the swap to a DHD? I'm interested as well because I believe my DLD is taking a dump.

There are several flavors of DHD's. The one piece tailshaft DHD is the one you want. It has a bigger output shaft than the two piece DHD. THe big output shaft DHD will bolt right up. I just bought a drive shaft out of a 3500, since I was installing a D80 at the same time, local driveshaft shop told me about $150 to mod my drivshaft plus a new yoke($40), I paid $200 shipped for the other one, and had another driveshaft still. If you are modding your driveshaft, you will need to shorten it and get a new output yoke for it to work. Watch the years, you need a 1997 or older, since you have the speedo gear in the transfer case and also the shift pattern is different for 98 and newer.

Yeah I knew about 97-older... . but is there a difference in the truck about the 1 piece/2 piece thing? Like the automatics get the 2 piece and manuals the 1 piece? Or doesn't it work like that?

The one piece tailhousing can be used in manuals or automatics. When I bought one to replace my DLD I told the salvage yard I needed one for a 1997 3500 automatic. This got me a one piece tailshaft unit. I can't tell you why they came out with the two piece tailshaft and what apps it is for.

So on my truck, since I already have the D80, just buying a 94-97 1 piece tailshaft DHD will bolt right up? No driveshaft mods? 2500/3500 doesn't matter?

No you definately need a new slip yoke(DHD has the larger output shaft), and will have to have the front section of your drive shaft shortened.

I have a yoke make me an offer for it.

Is it a reg cab/long bed like yorus?? If so then yes. If not then you will need to shorten your shaft, and change the yoke out.

If your going to that, then why not just go with the much bigger 271? I paid around 1,000. for the 271 through transfercase exspress in Oakland.

Just a thought

I think the speedo issue is the show stopper. 271's are actually cheaper than 241HD's. I saw reman 271's for $849, and the 241HD was like $1049. If someone had a speedo output I would have put it on mine.
