According to my 5 star dodge dealer, all of us who have a bottle secured to the end of our blow by tube are crazy. One day last week I noticed a very heavy smell of diesel coming from my truck. Well looking around I couldn't locate a big stream or even a small one, even after climbing into the engine. It smelled like it was coming from the back of the engine and also under the truck there was a misting pattern on the transmission (left side) and a lot of other parts, but it wasn't flowing out. Well while a friend of mine and I were under there I decided to put a oils sample bottle on the end of the tube since I had one handy and to also see if the diesel was coming out of the tube. Filled a quarter of the bottle up in a day and a half of city driving, but I noticed that the diesel (not oil) was coming down the out side of the tube, NOT THE INSIDE!! So I traced the leak to a little from the area of the # 6 injector. Well I took it into Dodge and personally wrote on the service ticket to check the # 6 injector and steel tubing. They called and said I had this "after market part" on my blow by tube, but didn't find a leak and my truck was ready. I asked the service manger if he thoought it was odd that the bottle was by now 1/2 full of diesel and he said thats normal. Well I going to get my truck now and I guess I get a face to face explanition. I have 72K miles on the truck and have NEVER smelled diesel, in this amount, but what do I know!! Even if diesel was coming form the INSIDE of the tube, (1/2 a BOTTLE IN 2 DAYS) and it's not, I don't think that would be normal or am I crazy??.

My 99 didn't come with the bottle, so I bought one from Cummins. In about 3000 miles I would have about 1/8" of oil in the bottle and misting of oil on the engine where it would come out of the breather holes... what a mess! I have taken the bottle off and extended the hose to the front and have tied it off with a cable tie. No mess and the engine is clean. I would think from my experience that you have way too much oil/diesel in the bottle.

Bill, I agree something is amiss. You should not have any diesel fuel coming down the tube. I'd take the bottle off and take it to a reputable shop. I've learned that most Dodge dealerships don't have a capable Cummins mechanic.

How are you getting fuel from the #6 injector line on the blowby hose? Is it extended back under the rear of the engine?

At any rate, tighten the line nut a tad and see if it stops the leak. Your engine might be in the range to require the fuel lines replaced if you have added injectors too.

I'll bet the face-to-face explanation ought to leave you feeling mentally superior to your dealership. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who has faced this sort of stupidity. I guess I have plenty of company. Your better off fixing the leak yourself.

WellI had my face to face... Dragged the Service Manager out to the truck and asked if it was normal for diesel to be coming out the INSIDE of the blowby tube. He said yep. I told him that if the amount of diesel I had in the bottle after two days was muliplied by the amount of years I owned the truck, then why wasn't the whole &^%$*&# complete underbody of my truck not covered?? Well... . lets go talk to the TECHINICAN who worked on your truck. Dude... Same question to you... well you shouldn't have diesel fuel coming out, only a oil mist. . I asked if he checked to see what was in the bottle... NO..... or the fact that the fuel was coming down the outside of the tube... . well... . no. Hell, they even put it on a lift. Told me three time to just bring it back in... I said that what I brought it here for in the first place. He went on to say there were a lot of places on the left side of the engine by the fuel filter that could be leaking. Well, like DUH... did you check them... .

I'll tighten the nut to the injector and see if that works. I already tried that once and I tink it might be the compression fitting... The funny thing about this whole mess is that the little bottle sure got these clowns going on the wrong track, with tunnel vision!! My little bottle even made the reply or excuse on my service ticket, so now it's in the computer as a aftermarket part!! Wonder if they wabnt to buy some!!

Am I right in assuming that as the RPM's rise the fuel pressure in the high pressure fuel lines (to the injectors) rise to about 17405PSI, so at idle I would have less of a leak than when hauling ***?? I thought I asked the service manger, but mabey I didn't understand his answer... .

Thanks for letting me vent... 4 stars and dropping

Just a thought, but make sure the oil is not over filled! maybe something is leaking internally under the valve cover? Hope you figure it out.
