States to Delay Diesel Lubrication Standards

hello folks. my parents are spending my money on things i ask them to for my 04. 5 until i get back to the states. i have a lot to do on it when i get back. but lets get to the subject at hand... .

Boost.

im looking to get more boost from my stock turbo, without a box... .

i have heard of the "elbow" i guess it regulates the pressure comming off the turbo to the blow off vlave? and i have heard of the "banks big head" pop off valve.

of the two, what is better. can they both be run together, and where can i buy them?

i have an 04. 5 srw short box qc 2wd with 6 gears to row through. gauges are at the folks house to include boost to 60psi, fuel press and pyro. im going to be gutting the stock air intake and maybe making my own snorkle for it, not sure yet. other than the exhaust brake, arma coated bed, and the B&M turnover ball the truck is stock.

thanks for your time.

Grant,

I am no expert by any means, but I don't think increasing your boost on a stock system will do anything for you. On a gas engine your will get some more power out of it, but diesels act differently. From what I have learned the only real reason to increase boost on a diesel is to keep things cool when more fuel is added (by some kind of additional fueling add on). I came from a back round of playing with turbo gassers and these diesels are making me do a 180 when it comes to increasing thier performance. the biggest obstical I had to over come is (diesel + more fuel = heat vs. gasser + more fuel = cooler)... .

Have fun with all your toys...

Dave,

Thanks for the quick reply. what you are saying makes more sense. i have a 32 foot tripple axle GN on the way. a little more boost SHOULD keep me a bit cooler when requiring the fuel up the start of a grade. maybe i am way off on this but it makes a little sense to me. i plan on buying new injectors after a long while, and then a larger turbo and installing them at the same time.

anyone else have anymore input? thanks agian Dave,

and to anyone else.

Grant

the banks big head is just a replacement wastegate actuator... I don't understand why anyone would buy one. the factory actuator works just fine. the Banks actuator is just a factory holset actuator that they put a sticker on and charge a ton of money for.

if you want to increase boost, just use a boost elbow.

if you're at factory fueling, more boost probably won't do much for you.

The 04. 5 (600) has an electronically controlled wastegate on the stock turbo. You don't want to mess with it. It will already make in the mid-30's for boost.

Grant...

Thanks for doin' what you're doin'... some of us back here really do appreciate it. I'm hoistin a cold one in a salute to y'all right now!

Take care,

Grant whats going on I talked to your dad the other day he seems like a nice guy shipped those gauges out for you and the isolator should be there by now it was on backorder we're opening our new shop in South hill puyallup 1st of the year when you get home and drive through WA stop by and say hello if you can if not just keep in touch if you have any problems with install call me 253 376 8002 I sent you a real complete instructions packet so it should be easy. I told my wife I had been in contact with you she says Hello SSG Alfaro take care come home soon Kyle

I have an 04. 5 with a 6sp... when i get on it my boost shoots up to around 30 then drops to 25 when the wastegate opens... should i take it in to the dealer to have it checked out?

Where do you buy the boost elbows? Did searches, can't find a purchase place.

Looking for one on the 2003.

Generally the boost elbow is matched to the performance box you are running and therefore supplied by the same company. :D

Sig doesn't show, but have the BD D'Lr, and it never came with any elbow.

Boost is somewhat low in 03 compared to 98 with Blue Box & elbow.

And a couple key words are: "Generally", and "Performance box". The ones I've heard of aren't included with the box but the manufacturer suggests you use it with their box. I think not everyone marketing boxes makes folks aware of all the associated pitfalls and requirements.

www.haisleymachine.com can get you a boost elbow, call Patty will help.

A boost elbow wont help though unless you have a box to do boost fooling, because it will just defuel as the boost rises.

On the 04. 5 it has an electronic wastegate, but you can block the hose and fool the pressure sensor.

The line I was refering too is the 1/4 line running between the turbo and the PSI sender. Depending on how much boost you want to gain you can either restrict the line or block it totally(stuff a 1/4 inch dowell rod in the line).

I think it was the TST instruction sheet shows a way to restrict the sender by using 1/8" line and re routing it to the intake. Edge boost elbow has a smaller hole in it than the stock part. Haisleys elbow is totally blocked.
