I was driving the truck Friday night with the stereo and A/C off and noticed something for the first time since installing the Edge EZ and boost elbow. Maximum boost is running 30 psi, but at about 28 psi, the turbo whine and whistle (BHAF) becomes a louder "whoosh"! At first I thought it sounded like a boost leak, but I'm still getting 30 psi maximum boost, and EGT's look OK. I never heard this when the truck was stock and running 22 psi maximum boost.

Just to be sure, I checked and retightened all the intercooler hose clamps - no change in sound. Have those of you who are running this same setup noticed this phenomenon? Am I just hearing the wastegate opening and it's louder because of the higher airflow at the higher boost levels? Should I be checking further or just drive it?

Thanks for your suggestions. :)

I hear a sound change at over 20#'s too. Seems normal. Also if the fender boot is out you get more of a whoosh sound. Maybe it moved.

Just a bump back to the top to give the morning crew a chance to see this. Again, thanks for any advice or suggestions.

Duhhhh....It Was a Boost Leak, but Not Where I Expected!

After installing the boost elbow and seeing the higher boost pressures (30 PSI vs the stock 22 PSI), the rubber hose on the back of the Westach boost gauge decided to try to go AWOL, even though it was clamped with a tie-wrap. The tie-wrap had just pulled over the barb on the gauge when I found it last night, and the hose was a-fixin' to head South! Reinstalled hose, new tie wrap and everything is quiet (well, sorta!) again. :D

Amazing how much noise that small leak was generating. You'd swear that every hose clamp in the charge air cooling system was loose! Of course, I now have loosened every hose clamp in the system and turned them so that I can get a 7/16" deep socket and ratchet on them (at great cost to the skin on my hands and arms) as well as replacing the gaskets on either side of the intake heater grid - what's that they say about "buying your education the hard way"? ;)

Gets Your Attention

Rusty,

I had the same thing happen, while I was towing up a grade, after I had installed my Westach Boost gauge. It came all the way off, and it definitely got all my attention until I realized what it was... .

Westach should probably take a look at this as it has happened to several TDR members... . ;)

Mine did the same thing. I had failed to use the tie-wrap on the initial install. After the tie-wrap, mine is still holding at 40#+. No need to pull that thing until it goes, then I might add a little RTV to give it a little something extra to keep it on there.

I will admit though, it was a cause for concern when it first started to get loose. I did the same hting you did, checked all the intercooler hoses and the intake gaskets. I even went as far as to check the intake manifold gasket for visible signs of failure. Then heading up the onramp to 45 I floored it and heard the POP and felt air brush across my leg(mine is in the dash). ThenI immediatly realized what it was.

I will add that when you do Blow off a Intercooler hose when you are standing on the gas and pulling 40psi+ some G's and BAMMMMM/WOOSH and NO POWER:eek: It scares the H&** out of me!
