this weekend I had the borgenson steering box and shaft installed on the truck. I went to Rip at www.sourceautomotive.biz he is now a borg dealer. I have alot of trust in the work and ability from him and his staff. (as most already know this). Robert came in on a saturday due to the drive I have to make and work schedule big plus on that. the install went rather smoothly probley quicker if I didn't BS with Robert as much but when you see the new shop and all the other trucks in there and whats going on sorta hard not to.

the oem shaft did have play and a wore joint on the box end of the shaft and showing signs on the top half. after install and burping the system with fluid the truck now reminds me of response that a 3rd gen truck has. robert had to cut off and reweld the tab for the DSS shaft bearing not a big deal everything went smooth. it took alittle bit of the 3 hour drive home to get used to the smoother and quicker response of the steering on the freeway.

post pics when I can. all I can say is thumbs up for sourceautomotive and Robert. thanks again.

Still a bunch of Play in the steering. After Borgenson installed...

Ok, I just installed the Borgenson Box... I already had installed the shaft, and finally broke down and bought the box from Geno's... shipping was a bit , ahem, expensive, but hey... Also new Bilstein's... cheaper to buy them over there, and ship them here... even thought they are made here. Go figure.

Anyway, I digress, The complete front suspension was replaced less than a year ago, with Moog products from Rock auto. I still had play in the steering, and every-time I went over a bump, clunk... play in the steering box was evident, as the output shaft has side-play when rocking the wheel. Installed the Borgenson shaft, better, less play, but every bump, I could here the sector gear knocking... in with the box. I did the shocks a week later; RANCHOS ARE JUNK!

So here is the issue, the steering response is great... BUT there is still over two fingers of play when driving straight ahead. Is this normal??? Not exactly what I expected. When I installed the ,Firm-feel' box in my 'cuda, it was like night and day. Although I have a bit of play, nothing is knocking when I go over bumps...

Is this play normal???? Is there a solution? Thanks.

You should not here a clunk. Have someone rock the steering wheel back and forth. Something must be loose, worn, or bad. I am curently having an issue with the track bar mount on the axle. The hole is a little elongated. I plan to weld a washer on the mount to correct my issue. Cheap and easy. If everything is tight, make sure there is no slop in the steering column itself. Keep us posted. Good luck.

no clunk, just play in the steering.

To clarify, the ,clunk' was in the old box; the one with a bunch of side-play in the output shaft, there is no noise from the Borgenson Box, just a (what I think) is too much play when driving straight ahead. My truck is RWD, not AWD... and all of the components up front are new...

Sorry I missed that your truck is 2wd. Still, something must be loose, worn, or bad. Sometimes new parts are defective. If you have not done so, check your wheel bearings as well. Good luck

Uh, everything in the front end is new, except LCA and UCA bushings (They are OK) However, the bearings were replaced already... one last year, and the other a month or so ago...

kriskringle, I did the same on my 95 and have the same problem. After spending around $1k it's alot better but still have clunks and about an inch of play in the steering. I think that the bushings in the supension maybe the suspect. I also had an elongated hole where the pitman arm connects to the center link. They don't make the center link for my truck anymore so I shimmed the hole . 020 and seamed to fix the problem. I'll keep yuo posted if I find anything new.
