New Smarty Update

A freind with a 2003 auto 3500 "Loaned" me a Smarty programmer, and we set it on #7. I have a 2004. 5 auto 2500

WOW, Lots of power, but way too much smoke. Really was not looking for more power, just better fuel economy.

Anyway, after 24 hours we put my back to "stock" but now it seems my transmission shifts "different". From what I remember before, once the converter was locked on Overdrive, it really would not downshift, even floored. I would have to hit the "tow haul" for it drop to 3rd. I may be wrong, but is seems I noticed that it would not constantly downshift when towing.

Today, even at 65 MPH, if I go past 1/2 throttle, it downshifts into 3rd, and screams! and it is very slow to lock up under "moderate acceleration?

Mine is a 2004. 5 2500 with ATS 5 star trans, Co Pilot (I dont use) and edge (Unplugged)

Did ATS put a different program in my truck? Is the 2003 different from mine (My friend seemed to think the programmer was written for his truck, but "would work" on mine)

Or am I just dreaming that the trans now shifts different?

My guess is that his Smarty had a newer Dodge update flash than what was in your truck. When you put the stock software back in your truck before you gave him the Smarty back you got the newest updates that were in the Smarty. Make sense? BTW, there is no way to go back to the flash that was previously in your truck.

Was the Smarty a POD? The Smarty will make smoke, but only when you want it. To me the key to driving with Smarty is too use lighter throttle pressure than you normally would, at least it works for me. The POD Smarty can be "de-rated" to make less smoke and you can change that setting while on the go if need be.

Godspeed,
Trent

Someone please correct me if I am wrong but isn't the 2003 and 2004 trucks different than the 2004. 5. I was under the impression that 2004. 5 had more hp and a different emmisions package.

What you say is true, the engine was tweaked for 2004. 5 and beyond. However, the same software is used in the computer as far as the Smarty is concerned.

I checked the MADS site and both the Smarty S06 and S06 POD are to be used on the 2003 through 2007 5. 9's. I'm sure Marco reads the VIN and loads the appropriate program for either the 255/305hp or 325hp engines. I know the injector spray patterns and piston bowls are different thus necessitating alternate timing and duration injection events. Granted the file you download is the same but has VIN specific program logic.

Maybe Bob Wagner will chime in on this one.

The Smarty recognizes which truck you have, such as a 2003 High Output, or a 2004. 5, and leads the correct program. When you go back to stock, you get the latest re-flash version of the stock program as of when the Smarty program was written. Thus, you can use a Smarty on any of the various Turbo Diesels that it claims to fit, and it will automatically load the appropriate software.
