Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Bought lift pump, now must install

Bought part# 3990105 lift pump from Cummins. Curious about #3990082 mentioned in TDR issue 37, page 48 in the 24 valve engine section. Has this pump been superseded by bigger number. My new pump has a date of 7Nov,2002 on package. Anyway, I now must install the pump. Can some of you old hands who have installed these offer me any technical assistance to keep me from getting into too much trouble. I'm sure there are some tricks of the trade that can help an amateur. Thank you in advance for any comments.

Just put it in then cycle the key till you have good fuel pressure. Pretty easy install.

I am not an old hand at it , but I have had to do it three times on my 2002 truck.

It is actually a very simple job - two fuel line banjo bolts / three bolts that hold the pump to its bracket / and one wire to unplug ( there may be a wire adapter on certain trucks ) and that 's about it . I use a plastic bag to totally cover the starter just incase some fuel dripps down onto it . Get some new banjo bolt gaskets.

Take the banjo bolts loose first; than the wire plug ; than the three mounting bolts.

The first time it took me about a half hour , but after that it only takes about fifteen to twenty minutes from start to finish.

I replaced one of these troublemakers for the first time last year, took about forty min. and three wrenches. I'm oil change qualified at best.

The only advise I can offer is don't do it on a weeknight when everything is closed and you need to be at work the next morning. If there is some kind of problem... you'll be glad the next day is Saturday and you dont have to go anywhere fast. Oh and replace those plastic sealing washers on the banjo fittings. They are cheap and not worth re-using the old ones. I also took out my starter (5min job for me) cause I found it easier to do some stuff from underneath. Thats optional of course.

Yes, #3990105 is a later, upgraded pump, do not install #3990082. I see you have a 98. 5, you MIGHT need a "pigtail" electrical connector(if the pump has never been changed before), as many trucks with the older lift pumps had an electrical connection on top of the pump, and the wiring harness of the truck doesn't give enough slack to reach the bottom connection of the new pumps. I don't have the part number memorized, sorry, it's in my parts list back at the shop. But giving Cummins your engine serial number should be enough for them to look up the parts. A search on this website should turn up the part number, the search feature here works really great!

Save yourself some trouble before ordering the pigtail, feel around on top of the lift pump, and on the bottom of it, (or look, with a trouble light) and you should be able to determine where the clip connector for the pigtail is located. If it's on top, you need to order the pigtail too. Ncostello is correct, it's a good idea to change out the sealing washers also, you'll need 4. Hope this helps!

I did it from the top, removing the filter assembly. Then I looked at the manual and it said to remove starter, which would be doing it from the bottom.



Under the shadetree I like the top method better.
