I do all of my own maintenance... The only time I ever let anyone touch my vehicles is if its still under warranty or if the job requires a proprietary tool which is equal to or more money than the job would cost. Even at that, I know very few mechanics I trust enough. Why?...because I was one when I was younger so I know what goes on behind the scenes.

As for Les Schwab? I wouldnt trust those "trained" clowns to do anything other than mount a tire. And because I'm so distrusting, I dont sit in the lobby eating popcorn either but rather stand outside and watch their every move. And...have caught them doing crazy crap and/or not doing something they were supposed to be doing.

Finding a good and reputable auto mechanic is like trying to find a good and reputable doctor... If they dont know what they're doing then one guesses with your car and the other guesses with your health.

Im the same way. But the place I always go is a 100 mile round trip. I wanted to get it done and didnt want to spend the whole day walking around down there. Especially in the cold.

If you can do it yourself take the time and do it. If something ends up incorrect you learn how to fix it and know that it's done right. If you can't do it then like KATOOM said... a toss of the dice basically.

:) I stopped doing that 40 years ago. Too much hard work for this old body. I forgot about a local shop not too far away that I have confidence in though. Ill probably go there.
BTW, I do have the same misgivings about les schwab which is why i asked for others experience.
