break-away battery charger??

Sometime back I reported my BrakeSmart controller was blowing fuses. It was an older BrakeSmart, purchased from Master Brake and was several months out of warranty and Master Brake was out of business.

I contacted Dr. Performance, the current BrakeSmart dealer. They were very supportive and asked me to send them the controller to check out. About a week later the controller came back. It may have been damaged in shipping because although it didn't blow fuses, the menu function didn't work and after checking voltages and reinstalling, it completly lost the display. I sent it in for another checkout and spoke to Kevin Gardner in tech support about the problem. Kevin said they were looking at it and if they couldn't figure it out they would send me a new unit!

Today I received a brand new BrakeSmart controller from Dr. Performance and it even came by next day air! They did not charge me anything for this unbelievable service!!! Oo.

I also have an older BrakeSmart and when I first hook up to my trailer and calibrate the unit I get a blown fuse message. It then works without any problems so I just keep on going. What fuse could it have blown?

A blown fuse message and normal operation usually indicate that the 15 amp fuse in the back of the BrakeSmart controller is blown. It sticks out the back of the unit. When it's blown the BrakeSmart still works OK, the brakelight will not operate with the manual braking button. The only other fuses associated with the BrakeSmart are the 30 amp fuse that powers the unit and the 15 amp fuse that provides the signal that you are stepping on the brakes. If either of these fuses are blown the BrakeSmart won't work properly. If the 30 amp is blown, no display at all. 15 amp brake signal blown and no brakes since it won't know you are stepping on the brake. Also won't see PSI displayed when braking. In the 3rd gens the 30 amp is fuse 1 and the brake signal 15 amp is fuse 24. The fuse numbers may be different on your truck.
