Turning the corner in my subdivision this morning and the driver side tie rod broke at the wheel. Glad I wasn't on the highway.

You have got to be KIDDING! This situation has been happening on earlier models as well! THIS SHOULD BE A MAJOR RE-CALL!

Thanks for posting the pics. I finally get to see what many are experiencing. I wonder if it's as simple as parts made in overseas ? Why would they be such force on the 4th gens to break a joint, 2nd gens never had a problem like this.

IIRC there is a silent recall or at least a corporate memo about it. The tie rod ends are not set up right from the factory, one is rotated a bit more forward than the other, so as you get to full lock the body of the tie rod end contacts the shaft of the tie rod end. Look at the body and the shaft, I bet you see an indent where they were coming into contact. Not sure if it's on cumminsforum.com or dieseltruckresource.com, but there's a long thread about it.
KEEP THE OLD PARTS!!!

Picked up truck at dealer yesterday. My questions:

1) Did you replace the part with an upgraded part?

2) Why did this happen?

were not answered. I let the dealership know that I am not through with this issue as I consider it a safety matter.

waiting for my case manager to call me so I can present the same questions.

This just happened to me last night coming back from a trip with the Toy Hauler and family. I was backing the trailer up the drive, and was in low range 4X4 which I had done numerous time with my 99, 03 and 06 and never had this happen. Lots of binding backing up steep hill with 8000 lb + trailer. I hadn't even started up the drive, and I heard a "BANG".

</a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From 2010 Dodge Tie Rod end break</td></tr></table> At first I thought it was just 4X4 binding. But then I thought no that was the tie rod end breaking. Got out and found the tie rod wedged between my nice expensive rim and rotor.

I had to take the tire off to get it loose. I had read about this happening to a bunch of guy on the Cummins forums. It happens to both lifted and stock trucks. Most seemed to be new 2010's + trucks. The break looks just like everyone else.

I got the local Dodge dealer to give me the end in exchange for the broken one under warranty. He want's me to come in and get it realigned. The new one looks just like the old one. There were 3 different news posting on the web about the recall but the dealer was clueless. Ran my Vin and gave me my new power steering cap plus the tie rod end.

I am going to talk to him and see if I should wait until he get the recall information. My concern is this is going to happen again unless the correct procedure is followed to fix it.

I logged in to dodge.com "for owners" and pulled up my vehicle. It still does not have my vehicle listed as needing a recall for this. How is it we hear about these recalls from CNN before Dodge?

There are no recalls in effect for your vehicle.

VR_104--No Incomplete Recall Exists

Chrysler sent a notice to all dealers on July 8, 2011 the same day as it was announced to everyone else. As I understand it, NHTSA releases the info before the recall is ready to go. Chrysler has been sending advance notices for a while now to handle the inquires dealers might get from customers who hear it on the news.

My vin is also listed as no incomplete recalls on dodge.com + the local dealer ran my vin + said no recalls listed. Is this recall still coming or am I in the clear?

With a Man. date of 3/09 it would seem to be included. I don't want my wife driving up into the mountains on dirt roads if this is a potential!

Like Sag2 said they don't have a Recall as of this time, the NHTSA will rule after they have all the facts, your Dealer will then be able to deal with it, you can always just buy a new left TRE and have it installed for personal concerns if you want, just an option.

In the Denver paper lastweek they posted that dodge is having a recall on this. they said that turning tight was the cause ? not so sure about that if its happening on the highway. Dodge said that the media gets the release 2 to 3 weeks before they do, but they are sending out recalls.
