The guy who books my loads was on his way to Alaska with a load of horses and called me last night from Montana. Said he thought he had a rod knocking. I assured him it was an injector problem and not to worry

He called me tonight and told me that lube shop he used before he left Missouri used a Valvoline oil filter, and the '04 Cummins sucked the filter media up and killed #6. He called the lube shop and they said "sorry about your luck", but according to my buddy, they admitted knowing about an approved filter list. Apparently the Valvoline rep just happened to be there and said that the company who makes Valvoline filters was on the approved list ... ... ... ... I can't remember the company he named as his cell was breaking up really bad ... ... ... ... but he did say this company was not on the list. (He had the list in his hands from the Dodge dealer who has his truck)

I remember seeing a list floating around here and thought Wix was approved, he said they weren't ... ... ..... I've used Wix for 180,000 miles

The final repair bill is gonna be $12,000 and change, he said going straight to Cummins would save him $1,500 but it'd be 3 weeks longer for the short block. This all sounds a bit steep to me.

His truck is an '04 QC dually, with the 305 motor, auto and 200,000 miles ... ..... he tried to trade it, but they only offered him $6,000 with a junk motor :-laf

I've been using Donaldson oil filters for a year or so on my 2000 CTD. Does anyone out there know if they are on the "approved list"? I haven't noticed any problems with them yet. Thanks

Only # 6 and NO other apparent Damage, The Dealer Is F&F (Fishing for funds).

Dunno, his phone was really cuttin out bad, but he did mention #3 as well.

I agree with you guys, you get what you pay for with those quick lube places ... ... ... makes you wonder what they used for oil

Donaldson has been used on the Cummins Engines in the "off-Road & Heavy Duty" community for years!

That is for sure steep. I would be buying an engine on www.car-parts.com for like $4500, and then rebuilding the old one to be a super-street stomper!

$12k is insane!!

Makes you wonder how many 3rd gen trucks are wrecked every day that have nothing wrong with the engine. It's just a matter of finding one. Maybe the junkyards could search for a recently wrecked truck and source an engine.

Where is he broke down at and what dealer is he talking to? If he is in Great Falls MT let me know. I will let him buy his parts and pay for his labor using my account with Lithia to get him 25% off on both parts and labor.

Now that is why I’m a member of the TDR. Thank you BlackSheep for keeping the Register a family. My friend had a “53” block water jacket crack and had it replaced for less then half of what it would have cost had it not been for the TDR. Thanks to everyone.

Thats a great offer BlackSheep, unfortunately he is in Wolf Point and his truck is at Camrud Motors. I guess they are trying to find him a truck to finish his run to Alaska and back while they are working on his truck. The hotel is $65/night and the guy who is boarding the horses is charging $50/night for what amounts to a large round pen.

On a better note, he is expecting a call from Valvoline, they are apparently looking at turning it in on their insurance. I'm not sure if he meant Valvoline, or the speedy lube shop, his cell is crap up there, LOL.

Something Missing Here ,If the Filter collapse the journals would have Been Plugged and the Mains and rods would have went WAY before any Burned Holes, Also if the Valvoline Filter failed get documentation,Valvoline has Pay on claims like this in the past.

As far as I know, he never lost any pistons, and they only ordered a short block.
