2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Busted!!!

One of the guys that pulls RVs for me has been running Dodge/Cummins for sometime now.

He thought he was being real smart by having 2 complete dash units. When one would get up close to the warranty cutoff point, he would install the other dash and keep rolling. Then he would take the first dash to a "mile buster" and have the miles turned back. He would put 2 to 3 HUNDRED THOUSAND miles on a truck and trade it with 60 to 70 K showing.



Turns out that the '02s have a built in hour meter in the computer and when he went in for service the other day,..... BUSTED!

Now he needs to keep his fingers crossed that the dealer doesn't turn him in for Odometer fraud.

Altering the mileage reading on a motor vehicle is a felony.





Odometer fraud is practiced by a variety of people, including:



Organizations that roll back (or "clock") the odometers on thousands of cars, wholesaling them to dealers who resell them to the public.

Groups of individuals (commonly called "curbstoners") who buy cars, clock them, and sell them through the classifieds, passing them off as cars of a friend or relative ("I'm selling Aunt Sally's Buick for her. ").

Individuals who only clock their own car to defeat a lease provision or cheat on a warranty

The Cummins Quick Check II also tells the hours on the engine through the ECM. Sounds like he got caught with his hands in the 'ol cookie jar

Personally, I'd be a little sceptical about associating with some one who changed odometers... makes one wonder in what other ways the person cheats.

I know a couple guys who pull the ABS fuse out to deactivate the speedo/odo among other things... ... I tried to explain to them nicely that the fact that it wasn't affecting transmission shift points etc. means that the PCM is still registering speed... ... and more than likely still counting mileage. Of course in their eyes I'm too stupid to know anything like that so onward they soldier. One of these days a scan tool will reveal their sins..... and it ain't gonna be real pretty. I know of another fella that did get busted trading in a truck that the odometer had been tampered with-around a '95 gasser IIRC. The dealer gave him 2 choices-pay the difference between the value he had given him for tradein on a creampuff and the actual tradein value of the truck, or explain himself to the RCMP. Guess which one he chose? The truck ended up going out to end its life as a fuel truck/parts chaser for a construction company. Actually I know another guy that got caught trading in a tampered odometer GM truck-he had to buy it back and I'm not sure what happened to it after that-but he was also not very popular with the RCMP-I try to stay away from buying anything he has for sale



IMO there's always some way to get caught..... best to just take your lumps at tradein time.

PCM most definitely logs mileage. Actual mileage with very little error. Seen it with my own two eyes. Any service guy with the hand held progamming unit can get on line. Of course the same guy can also program any mileage he wants in it. There is a function to 'match' mileage if you do a comp. change. This was on my 97.

I am glad I have an 01. I have to admit I have been told I need to do this as much as I drive but it is not worth it if or when a guy gets caught.

Strictly out of curiosity, is this just a 24v deal or are all years affected? And, if you replaced a PCM could you use a new "blank" one?

2 posts up. My 97 is a 12V... . It can be changed in _your_ PCM, no need for a blank. There are ways around anything...

Now you know why dealers give you squat for trade-in. It's to cover costs from jerks like this.



It just burns me when I hear things like this - I guess honesty is only something you read about in history books.

I regard this as plain old fraud. Big fine or time in jail for this sort of thing. And rightly so.

Wouldn't the hour meter just register how long the engine was running and not road time? Maybe he idled his truck in the driveway and listened to the radio without going anywhere.

For the sake of discussion and to provoke some thoughtful consideration, let me ask a philosophical (and perhaps theological) question - How is this different than pulling off the BOMBs and taking the truck back in for warranty work when one knows that the BOMBs and/or one's associated use of the truck (drag racing, burnouts, etc. ) may have caused or at least contributed to the problem to be warranted?



And, yes, I am prepared to be my own warranty station, but nothing's failed so far.

You bring up a good point Rusty. I don't think there IS a difference, you cheat, you cheat. There is no scale to how much "wronger" one is then the other IMO.

Why not? We have different levels of theft, trespassing, assault, and murder. And I'm sure that there are different levels of fraud. Purgery seems to be the one and only constant "did, or didn't".



To get back on the subject, I hope he get's what he deserves. Seems to be the type of person that has no problem screwing over the next guy to get ahead.

The Insite laptop progrm will tell the DC or Cummins dealer the hours, idle hours, gallons of fuel, and miles. The miles are within a couple of %. It will also tell fastest ever speed and graph out where the truck has been uses with engine speed on one axis and % load on the other.
