i am buying this trailer and owner says he does not have a title just a regestation. says he never got a title for it. he is the origial owner. purchased new in 95'. . anyone run into a snag like this . i live in pa and dont want to et stuck with this trailer. any help would be appreciated.

If he has one, tell him to go to DMV and get a duplicate title. I don't buy anything unless I see a title or certificate of origin. Can't register anything out here with out a title.

Lost Title Bond

Rich-Out here, if you can't get a duplicate for some reason, the DMV will allow you to buy a bond for a lost title. You get an appraisal of the vehicle and buy the bond from your independent insurance agent for twice the appraisal amount. This protects the state if somehow there are repercussions from them issuing a new title. It's not expensive, and allows you to get a title.

Might give your agent a call. Bruce

At least on smaller trailers there is no title in NY. When you buy things like trailers or ATV's they come with a Certificate of Origin that you give to DMV for the first registration and after that everything is done with the registration.

I just went and looked if the trailer is 1000 lbs or more it has a title.

NYS DMV

When you either buy or pay off a car, you will go to the New York Department of Motor Vehicles to transfer the title. The DMV will take the old title, which the previous owner signed over to you during the sale, and issue you a new title in your name. This document is the official proof that you own the car, so you should keep it in a secure place―not in the vehicle itself. The DMV issues Certificates of Title (MV-999) for cars, trucks, motorcycles, motorboats, travel or utility trailers weighing 1,000 pounds or more, and manufactured homes (mobile homes).

Any thing newer than '73 should have a title. Like Tim says, over 1k. Unless it's a real nice trailer, I wouldn't mess with it. Plenty of trailers out there with good paperwork! ;)

My dad bought a trailer without a title one time. Bought new lights, some other stuff, showed a handful of receipts to big brother and registered it as a homebuilt unit.

Uhm..... I know a guy that had an old snowmobile trailer that didn't even have a registration (it was lost), he was able to go to DMV and tell them he built it and get it registered as a 2004 homebuilt when actually it was a 1968 or somewhere around there. No receipts were required;)

In PA, all you need is a registration and BOS from another state to get a title in PA... I'm going through this !&#*(&^ nightmare with my M37 (which was never registered or titled).

To further add to my post, I'm currently going through a title service in Alabama to get a BOS and registration (in Alabama) so I can provide that to PA to get a title for the M37. And if the thing has been titled longer than 7 years, the DMV WILL NOT have the title in their system... all titles get purged from the system after 7 years...

California is doing this as well. I just bought a small box trailer. When I registered it they told me there will be not title, just registration. It comes with permanant license plates. They told me if I sell it just to file a bill of sale and release of liability with DMV. Now this only applies to utility type trailers not RV's. I know that other states are doing this as well!!

Guys:

I live in NY State and have a 28ft Enclosed Car hauler, 4300 lbs dry which I bought brand new in 2004. I did not get a title for the trailer from NY DMV. I handed them my Certificate of Origin along with a certified weight slip and they gave me a registration certificate, no title...

I would not steer clear of the trailer if you really want it because of this. Call NYS DMV and ask them yourself. They will talk to you!

A certificate of origin is from the manufacturer... I did the same thing when I bought my equipment trailer NEW. Being he is buying it USED, he most likely won't have a current BOS that matches the COO.
