I pulled the rear seat from my Quad Cab to vacuum broken pieces of rear window glass and found that the sheet metal behind that thin seat has NO SOUND DEADENING material at all!

Some of you would probably remove it if it did, but none-the-less, I obtained some egg crate foam material and insulated the sheet metal. The piece of material required is 20-1\2" x 61". Used contact cement to tack it in place.

It has reduced some of the sound, and will also help hold cool/heat.

bennettj,

I sprayed a layer of rubber undercoat on my back panel, and added a sheet of thick carpet underpad. It seemed to help the road noise some but didn't dampen the drone of my straightpipe exhaust at all.

I understand Dynamat is pretty good stuff, it is specially designed to cut road noise so stereo customers can reap full benefits of a stereo upgrade. But the stuff is spendy and you have to pretty much gut your interior to install it. And Evan Beck heard it makes the interior smell on hot days. However it's on my "sometime in the future" BOMB list.

I helped my brother put Dynamat on almost every inch of the inside of his Dakota. Living in Texas it gets HOT, and I have never smelled anything from the Dynamat. Anyway, it kinda smells like diesel #ad

The stuff works great. This is the same stuff the put in all the luxury cars to cut road noise. I highly reccomend it.

I've used Dynamat in several different vehicles since it was first released on the market. I had hundreds of square feet of Dynamat (now called) Original in my GMC (full size) Jimmy, having multiple layers as required for my stereo. Other than at the time of installation, I have never smelled the Dynamat in the interior. In a more recent vehicle I used the Dynamat Super which is essentially the same thing with a foil like facing.

I'm in the middle of Dynamatting my Ram, using their new, and very trick Xtreme. This material can only be fabricated in smaller sheets due to the nature of the material. The Dynamat Xtreme is 2x more effective than Dynamat Super, 4x more effective than Dynamat Original! Xtreme is made of a butyl material with a foil facing and does not require heat to effectively apply. I'm going to use a layer of Xtreme on the back cab wall followed by a layer of Dynaliner (or their Hoodliner if space will allow). Under the carpeting I'm using Dynaliner Max which is the ULTIMATE sound absorbsion material. I would use this on the wall although, with a layer of lead in the composition of this material, it's not recommended for overhead or verticle surfaces. Dynamat Xtreme has been (will be) used in all other areas I haven't already applied it. I just need to give Gary's son a call at Summit Racing and order some more. BTW, the Xtreme has virtually NO smell.

There are other materials that can essentially net the same results for less money although, they are usually quite a bit thicker, making them harder to apply to doors (not to mention most are not able to be placed in a semi-damp environment such as a door). Sure Dynamat is expensive... but the best always is!

John,

You gotta take me for a spin in that big black Ram of yours on the 13th. It would be nice to see for myself how well the Dynamat works, and whether it would be a worthy investment. That stuff at a local stereo shop was very expensive, but I know it would be quite a bit less if you give Willyslover's son a call. I have sensitive ears and frequently take long road trips, so a little more quietness would make the trip more enjoyable #ad

Dynamat is great. Not that expensive. I did the whole inside of a 72 plymouth cuda for $150. You would not believe it is the same car. It has one of them viberatin at idle noisy engines in it. 39 square feet was 99. 95 at Nebraska furniture mart. Yes they sell car stereos there. Stereo shops wanted twice that much so shop around.

Vaughn, I will have to honor your request at a later NW BOMBer get together as I've only got about 10% of it done, if that. I kind of put this project on the back burner for a while... until maybe mid September. I will be installing a new CB at that time too. TOO many projects, too little time.

One of the things that really quieted my Ram down was the addition of my Air Bulldog induction hood. Even without the use of hood insulation, the double-wall fiberglass construction makes for effective sound abatement. I was considering the addition of the Dynamat Hoodliner (at this location) although, if I do, it will be the last thing I add, after I see how the remainder of the project turns out.

Adding Dynamat can be rather inexpensive if you exercise a little restraint... and use Dynamat Original. The price increases as you upgrade to better Dynamat products. The outline listed (for my Ram) in my last post was based on installing the best Dynamat products Dynamic Control of North America, Inc. has to offer (after having received expert consultation from them). I've been very pleased with the performance of their products in the past, there's no reason they shouldn't work even better on my Ram.

BTW, that is a good price on the 39 sq. ft. of Dynamat Original 6bbl. It normally goes for around $140.
