Cummins Rocky Mountain Truck Fest – Open house at ATS Diesel Performance

Tulare

Just a quick update after day1.

Scotty has done an excellent job putting this whole thing together. Everyone was all smiles today, even after the Calgary Stampede festivities last night:cool:.

Temperature: VERY HOT! (36*C)

# of trucks: ~ 30

The dyno was acting up a little in the heat so some of the numbers are questionable (on the low side). The dyno is a load down style so most of us had to get out of the go pedal before EGT's went to the moon. Not many postings over 300HP as most of the big hp guys (piers, drawson) did not run today. Tomorrow should be a great show if all goes well! The vendor's displays were great and very informative. For all those in the area, stop by and enjoy the smoke:). More to come.....

Marc

Hotsy Totsy

I did get to talk to the "Wee One" today and the heat seems to have caught you guys by surprise. I guess this is a record that has held for over a century. YIKES!!!=O

Anyway, I hope it cools down in the evening so you might be able to enjoy your cowboy sodas and chewing tobacco over a nicely toasted Alberta beef porterhouse:D Yummy tummy;)

I'm sure a good time will be had by anybody inclined to do so.

BTW, if you see a tall fellow without hair, his name is butch (no it's Gary really). He drives a lil gray truck and has a hard time with directions:) Navigationally challenged you might say. Anyway, please give him a cup of water to fend off dehydration and point him south if you don't mind.

Just walked in from DDS and the aftershocks... ... . day 2 was better in the AM but seriously hot again in the afternoon. Dee Rawson put down the big # of the event at a shade over 400 hp-but I can't remember the exact #. Dee may chime in here-I will try to get the #'s from Rod to post. Some did better than expected-some did around what they expected-some didn't get what they should have. Weather was a big factor-but there were some dyno issues as well especially the first day. All in all for our first serious organized attempt I think things came off OK. Everybody that entered left with a prize-thanks to all who donated. A big thanks to the vendors involved-I'm going strictly by memory here (at least what I didn't damage Saturday night)... ... Piers Diesel Research, Diesel Transmission Technology, NW Custom, Lubetec, Amsoil, BD/GCL Diesel, Wildcat Diesel, & Bully Dog/CT Performance.

Special mentions go out to the long distance men of the event-drawson (Dee Rawson) and willyslover (Gary Troyer). Both guys went above and beyond the call of duty to help us out with whatever we needed. It was good to meet Vaughn Mackenzie and Jason Burton as well as Piers, Bill K and Stefan... . and good to see all the other ABC guys that I hadn't seen for a while.

Props to the Wee One (Scott Pirsak) for pulling everything together. Lil' Dog (Jason Hoffman) took care of the electronic end of the dyno stuff both days. Rod Snaith put in a lot of effort as well.

Big attaboys to Marc Kuzik (MDKram) for sweating 20 lbs. off in the hot Sunday sun helping out a fellow ABC member with his truck-and Alex Hett (cold Diesel) for tow duties today rescuing a fallen soldier. Both these guys are class acts and reflect what we want the ABC to be-a bunch of good guys who are willing to make personal sacrifices to help out another member in need-and I wanted to get it on here so they get a little bit of recognition for their good deeds! This is in no way meant to slight anybody else as everyone chipped in in some way... ...

We are already thinking about next year's event-what we did right, what we did wrong, and what we didn't do at all :) . It'll be bigger, better and more powerful for sure!

All in all I think it was a great event-got to talk diesel stuff with a bunch of like-minded guys, see some cool stuff, and even drink a little bit on Saturday night. How could you go wrong?

HP #`s low

The #`s off the dyno were a little depressing for me. Was expecting a bit more. . Hooked up the DRB today and prettymuch found a good contributor to the low #`s when I seen an overheat condition from the 55 degrees C in room temp. Kind of felt a little sluggish comin home last night. Power is now back to normal :D , guess I should have taken a DRB with me to the function :( . Oh well next year is another year. .

It was nice being able to put some faces to the names and meeting the very informative vendors. . Hats off to you guys who travelled long distances to be there. .

Hey Jason, were you able to get yours on the dyno? If so, what were your #`s. . Garth

Yeah Garth I managed to get on early Sunday morning (it seemed early to me anyways after Saturday night although probably to most people it was closer to mid-morning :D ). 1 power run only-344 hp with a ton of heat. I know what my next move is-more air... ...

Too bad you didn't have a DRBIII with you and that you weren't there on Sunday-we could have used a scan tool later in the afternoon. Maybe next time that's something we should try to line up. Might be neat to be able to scan a few trucks and clear some pesky fault codes!

Jason

I thought it was a great event, thanks to Scotty for organizing and all the Vendor's for participating. Nice to meet you Jason, Alex and Garth. Dee Rawson got 409hp I believe. I couldn't be happier with 248hp from my stock ETH. :D

Thanks for the kind words Jason. It was a situation where a member had someone install a "homemade" fuel plate in his truck (97 5-spd, 2175 CPL) which was apparently a #11. After a little struggle with the break-off screw (don't ask me why it was broken off again + no washer), we found a surprise. The plate was not even close to an 11. It looked like a #6 which had the upper end fuelling modified. The upper end was tapered toward the front of the pump, i. e. mega upper end fuelling. This member could only make about 260HP on the dyno with this plate full forward because he had EGT problems everywhere. For comparison, my truck with only a #11 made 287HP (~. 020" shy of full forward) before I had to get out of the go pedal due to high EGTs. Needless to say, this member will be changing to the proper plate for his needs.

It really bothers me when these "one plate wonders" feel they know what they are doing by installing these misrepresented parts into customers trucks. Enough said.

As Jason said, we all had a little learning curve to battle with the dyno. It took me 5 runs to get a decent number. On day 1, we ran the dyno in automatic mode which meant put it to the rugs and watch your gauges. Well my 3k spring kit let the truck run at about 3700 RPM, yikes!!! Things got hot real quick. Second run, still day 1, the dyno operator and I tried to run in manual mode. This was our (the groups) first attempt at this. I ran at 3500 RPM and again temps got hot quickly. Day 2: We all ran again and finally dialed in the manual operation of the dyno. I made 3 runs: 2500 RPM (~250 HP, no EGT problems), 2750 RPM (~268 HP, no EGT problems), 3000 RPM (287 HP, stopped loading when EGTs hit 1350*F). This style of dyno showed us all that air mods are very important! Next year, I'm sure more substantial intake and exhaust mods will be present on more trucks!

As Jason said, the event was a great success for a first time outing. Scotty, you did a fantastic job of the whole thing! Everyone helped where and when they could which was great to see. I look forward to next years event!

Just Checkin' in

Well it was a lot of fun at Scotty's event and it was great to meet all you guys! Yeah it coulda been a little cooler and and hard as that dyno was on trucks I'm glad I didn't sign up. Scot put a lot of work into this so next year I hope a few more NW BOMBers can come and join Jason and I.

Hey did they get Big White running again?

I'm on my way home, just pulled off here in High Level AB to get online at the library. Spent the night in NW Territories on the shores of Great Slave Lake  My what beautiful country, but my windshield's a goner!

Gotta go, they charge $5 an hour to go online!

The White Warrior is sitting in Hanna waiting for an injection pump to come from Piers :( :( :( ..... Pretty much everything that could go wrong from Sunday afternoon on has so far-including having the borrowed trailer we scrounged up on Monday pop off the hitch ball while winching the truck on. A valuable lesson was learned there-just because the owner tells you it takes a 2" ball doesn't necessarily mean it's so! After that little debacle we cleaned up the coupler to find 2-5/16" stamped on it-how the owner has never lost it I have no idea..... the finale to the trailer saga was to have the ramp access door come open on the trip home (which I had bolted shut!) and 1 ramp disappear into the Alberta wilderness. So I am waiting for a callback from him now so I can send him to a welding shop to have another made up-the trailer rent just got a whole lot more expensive... ...

On the bright side nobody has gotten killed yet (although if Lady Luck doesn't quit toying with our emotions I won't rule it out! :D )-and hopefully by this time tomorrow Scott will be home again.

Forgot to mention City Diesel on the vendor list earlier-remember I told you I'd forget someone in there!

Jason

If you don't mind me asking what happened to Scott's truck? When I left Sunday just after noon he was ripping around in the parking lot spewing exhaust and tire smoke and heading for the dyno bay. I take it his VP44 died? Wasn't the pump wire just hooked up the day before?

My bad......

To be frank-installation error on the Blue Chip pump cover that took out the circuit board. I am majorly bummed about it-and take responsibility for what happened... ... because I should have known better. I didn't actually turn the wrenches-but I was in the bay as self-appointed tech advisor so I am taking the weight of the failure full-square on my shoulders. I felt-and still feel-worse about the fact that it was on someone else's truck other than my own... ... .

No warranty claim here folks-we did manage to pierce the pump wire and the Motherland is quite aware of the BC cover and where to look for telltale signs. Warranty pumps are remanufactured ones now-so there is no way to cover your tracks... ... Oh well-really nothing that $2K Canadian won't fix up  . Also for the record, it's cheaper to get a brand new one from Piers than it is to get a reman one through the DC parts system if you keep the core-and they are on restriction right now so even if you want to buy one cash the dealership has to go through STAR for it to even be released from the parts depot..... I've learned a lot this weekend that I really didn't want to know about! Whaddya gonna do though... ... .

Jason

Whoa, sorry to dig that one up Jason. Don't be too hard on yourself dude, ***** happens and I'm sure yours and Alex' help was/is appreciated.

Rich

JAson, It is I that take responsiblity for Scotty truck if it wouldn't have been for me he would have hooked up that wire and would have been fine. I really didn't want to win up there is was Scotty's show and he is the one that should have been on top.

We spent all day (it seemed like) putting that B1a on Scotty's truck I want to see it kick some butt.

This Dyno they used up there put the hardest load my truck has even had. The Dyno runs lasted minutes in stead of seconds. The tires didn't slip after they adjusted them and I made 2 more pounds of boost than I have ever under the load. This dyno would be a good one for a NOS run either.

All you guys where great I really had a great time but next time I'll lave the 100 deg (35c) weather back here in Utah.

I write more tomorrow I'm pretty beat from the 12 hour dirve today:{

Definitely not your fault Dee-there was more than your influence being exerted on him to tap the wire for the big #'s :) ... ... . and in typical fashion you can't point the finger at any one major screwup-it was a series of minor events that fed on each other until the pendulum swung hard over to the bad side. Probably chief reason had to do with the weather-I honestly believe if everyone hadn't been baked from the 2 screaming hot days we would have thought a little closer about what was going on-I know I would have . It finally caught me today-around 4:30 I was so beat I couldn't even see the monitor anymore-had to lay down for a nap.

Rod had trouble too going home to Nipawin so he ended up having to stay over last night in Hanna as well... ... you were spot on the money with your boost leak diagnosis-sieved intercooler. Also some other problems that we're still not sure of the root cause of. He should be back home again as we speak though... ...

And tonight the bad luck started rubbing off on me-one of my super-magic heated tow mirrors lost the glass assembly at speed down the highway. Smashed the glass all up-and I'm pretty sure there are no serviceable pieces from Chrysler... ... tomorrow will tell I guess. Hopefully by noon tomorrow Scott will be mobile again and I can get back on with a few things-I've put all my plans on hold until we get him movin'!

Jason

I'm gonna order a Scotty II to help him pay for the new pump :D .

Drawson I love that dyno also, no comparison to the Mustang I used previously. I took 30sec getting to 78mph/3100rpm at minimal load, another 20sec to get near full throttle @ 3100 while he increased load, then 12sec at WOT while he loaded the truck down from 3100 to 2200rpm. Super test of the truck, probably had high EGT's though even with no bombs.

Did I mention 248hp with a stock ETH? :D :D The mustang run gave me 176 but I knew that was bogus.

Finally running again.......

..... fate just couldn't resist jerking our chain 1 last time though. Piers had trouble getting the pump up through Customs yesterday so it never arrived this morning. By the time we knew for sure it wasn't coming it was after lunch..... and Scott was pretty much all done with the thriving metropolis of Hanna. We managed to get the dealer principal to let us take the pump off a new one on the lot to be replaced tomorrow when the new one comes from Piers-after arm-twisting at the service counter to get us a mechanic freed up everything went fine after that. The Wee One got pointed east again around 4:30 this afternoon much to everyone's relief----he has things to attend to and so do I.

Things have to improve now I'm thinking-they've pretty much hit rock-bottom over the last 72 hours :) . Probably nobody happier than me to hear old White Pride roar back to life again... ...

Jason

Just 1 Dee-#4 exhaust IIRC. I suspect this came from his Thursday night test and tune on the dyno where he pegged out his water temp gauge... ... but I can't say for positive. Still working on the intercooler project I think-I talked to him this afternoon but we both had other things on our minds so that never got brought to the forefront.

I talked to Scotty again around 8:00 or so-he had made it as far as Rosetown by that time-seemed his spirits had improved the further east he got! :D Should be sleeping in his own bed tonight for the 1st time in a week.

I'm still trying to figure out which exact deity we offended to manufacture such crappy luck all of a sudden. Next time someone tells you bad luck only comes in runs of 3's, punch him in the nose! :p Maybe in multiple runs of 3's... ... . wouldn't surprise me to wake up tomorrow to find a meteor squashing the Silver Cloud to a 6" height... ..... is it coming through the monitor that I'm majorly upset over the events of the past 72 hours?

Jason

Jason don't sweat it too much. It has always been my observation that along with the bad stuff there is just as much good/great stuff coming also. And with all the bad luck you've got some very good luck coming... .
