Lower a truck?

Cummins 2 cycle?

Your so right Harvey. I live in a small town north of San Diego. I'm taxed to death, all except property tax which is under threat at the present time. I deal with the immigration problem and not with a bleeding heart. I feel like the ALAMO on my four acres surrounded by people who don't even speak English, and pay over a million dollars cash for their homes. They pay no taxes because all their business is done in Mexico, and if they make money here it goes there. So much for immigrant bashing my favorate pass time. I wonder why?

I owned a nice home in Imperial Beach back in the mid-80s. I retired from the Navy there in '87. When as a "civilian" in 1988 I became subject to CA auto registration (taxes) and state income taxes, began to look seriously at the overwhelming influx of illegals, the crime, excess population, miserable traffic, and the incredibly goofy politics and all the other goofy things that go along with living in that beautiful city, I decided to escape while I could. We moved to TX in late 1988. We have continued to return to visit SD every year since but wouldn't even entertain the thought of returning. Nice place to visit but... ... ... ... .

If you have a family member who qualifies for handicapped plates you can get them on your truck. Then the weight fees are waived. It's still registered commercial so you don't have to worry about having a top on the bed.

Some have suggested that the current CA administration is responsible for the commercial tag requirement. While they had much to do with the current cost of same, my first new truck was a 1/2 ton chevy bought in 1963 which required commercial tags if I ever planned to put anything in the bed. Camper caps were pretty scarce in those days. A number of politicians have been in power since then.

that's why all of the Home Depot handicap spaces have contractor's trucks with lumber racks and handicap cards:-laf

Not true the truck Must be reg in The disabled person's Name to get plates as for the placard any yo yo can get one it look's like they hand em out like Choclate bar's or chicken leg's :-laf:-laf

Sorry. Read the law. It's on line. Unless it has been changed recently if you can show you are responsible for the transportation of a disabled person, you can get the blue placard or the DP plates. In my case, my wife is disabled and is on the title as co-owner. The weight requirement changed a few years ago. It was less than 6000lbs so our Dodges didn't qualify, now it's less than 8001lbs.

California Pickup Commercial Laws

None of the above apply... They just want your $$$$$

I too am square in the middle of this BS thing about registering as commercial. I bought an F-350 Super Duty DRW 1 ton and sure enough, the dealer changed my vehicle class to 32Y, what ever that means. I now pay $1012 per year registration, and....it gets better, I was given these 2 stickers aprox 3" square that I supposed to place on each of my doors! On my brand new Pickup! They are in my glovebox LOL. Yes, I tow my 5th wheel RV a few times per year, otherwise its my daily driver. DMV tells me that because I may use it to tow my personal RV, I must pay the extra. Get this, I called DOT, Dept of Transportation, in Sacramento, the Capitol, and spoke with a DOT officer. These are the guys that work at the scales for all the big rigs to get weighed and inspected. They told me that they have NO ORDIANCE to support what we've been discussing, NADA. That translates to NO TICKET! However, IF a highway patrol person see's you chugging down the road with a 1/2 ton pickup, and a 5th wheel in tow, AND, you look unsafe, truck almost squatting, fishtailing, just looking unsafe for that combination, they will pull you over and issue a safety citation of some sort. Maybe put a "out of service" sticker on your rig so you cannot continue. My F-350 Super Duty DRW is over kill for my trailer as my trailer is only a 2 axel each designed to carry 7K each axel. My GVWR on my trailer is 16,500 since part of my trailer weight will be bridged to the towing vehicle. In other words, part of that weight will be on the truck bed. My GVW only on my 5th wheel is 13,500. Oh, and lastly, my truck GVW is under 10K. So, my point and freekin complaint is.........I'm under 10K actual truck weight, so why must I fill out a form at registration time showing my combined weight? How do they even know I got a trailer? Such BS. I'm considering a Chevy 2500 and just bend over on what I've lost in tax and down payment. Oh, just a FYI, here in this fine state of California, I had to change my class C DL to a non commercial Class A, take a driving test pulling my RV, and take an 18 question test. As for registration out of state, yep, will save you lots, however, as already mentioned, you will get tagged at some point and I can't even imaging what would or could happen. I wouldn't mess with it. Oh, BTW, I'm a democrat and voted for myself lol

WOW, these old threads with the old members bring back memories. Ok you got a little square door sticker, what is the number of that sticker? That number is the declared GCW you are paying taxes on, and their (DMV) heartless about it. All Chassis’s and Cab trucks are automatically registered like your F350, however I believe if it’s a complete vehicle in the 1 ton class and weighs under 10K pounds, it’s registered like a pickup truck. Does the door sticker have incomplete vehicle on it? Also your auto insurance is outrageous, unless you can get your insurance carrier to insure it like a pickup. I went through this with my 07 C&C and I declared 15K GCW, and got AAA insurance to insure it at a private pickup rate, saving me a grand a year. I never put that sticker on my door, and I tow my 5ver in signature. However I don’t use it commercially and have never been hassled. In the spring it won’t be registered with Comifornia, and I won’t tow with it again until after I register it in Nevada. Good buy COMIFORNIA. By June of 2018, all of my vehicles will be registered in Nevada.

Thanks for your quick reply. As for the sticker, is says 26 on it. That represents the allowable weight I'm legal to haul including the truck! Originally, the sticker issued was a 34!!! Seems nobody realized that in order for me to haul ANYTHING over 26,001, you MUST have a CDL, Commercial DL. It took an act of GOD to get someone at DMV to understand that and finally issued me stickers with 26. Your comment about being under 10K is correct, however there is a slight twist to that one too. According to DMV here in California, if your vehicle falls under 10K unladen weight, but is more that 8K, your Pickup Truck is no longer categorized as a Pickup, it is now a VA which stands for Variable something. If your under 10K and classified as a VA, this means that the DMV will send you in the mail at the time your reg is due, a 4008 form in which you pick which category your truck falls into. This determines how much road taxes you put on top of your regular registration fees. So so slick on their part!!! If your actual unladen weight is 8K or less, then you won't get that form because you are categorized as a Pickup. Finally, however, I know need to beg the Credit Union who has the title, to send it back to DMV so they can see the actual unladen weight from the factory. Your right, Nevada is a great option, and so close too.

Don't forget to send CA the old plate back or otherwise de-register your vehicle and plate with the state of CA. CA will cheerfully send you a bill at your out of state address with whatever late fees they want to tack on otherwise. Then you get to do the paperwork to fix it. Last I checked they were only 6 months behind on processing this sort of paperwork along with sold vehicle notices. So keep copies of paperwork you sent certified mail that got someone signing for it at the CA DMV.

:-laf I’ll hand deliver them to the Gestapo (DMV) with Nevada plates on my vehicle in their parking lot. :-laf:-laf:-laf. Thanks for the heads up.
