My wifes Canon Rebel was stolen on haloween. The dilema, so we spend $500 on a 35mm or get a digital? We want the high quality pictures, and my wife is interested in photography using our 1 year old little girl as the test subject. So what do you think we should do? 35mm or digital? Thanks for any help you can provide. This is our little girl Chloe.

From my experiences:

35mm is best for processed photos and enlargements for your photo albums, unless you are going to pay several thousand $ for a digital. I don't know what it costs to get a digital image processed, but I'm sure it's expensive.

Digital is best for web photo albums and postings, but your 35mm processed photos can be scanned for the purpose.

Digital gives you quick cheap images.

Digital images can be a pain to organize. They are also not easy to share with your friends and family, when they come over to visit, unless you have a projector.

I use both digital and 35mm, depending upon the circumstances.

Mrs Doc says she never gets to see the digital stuff and prefers to have everything done in 35mm. I hate spending the $ for 35mm processing. So the :-{} continues.

Doc

Excellent baby picture, by the way. You take that or was it the Mrs?

with the birth of our first grandchild the processing fee for 35mm just about broke the budget and you know the new grandma isn't gonna stop taking pictures.

So, we have gone digital with the old SLR in standby/quality mode. the digital is great for rapid viewing and print of just a couple of pic's on quality paper. we keep proof sheets (30 ish on a page) as an index so we can find 'em fast.

grandma has a 10x Olympus 730 and mine is a 3x Olympus Stylus 300 cause it's weather resistant and small to carry around while hiking, rafting and camping...

Thanks Doc & Lizzy... ... .....

My wife wants the 35mm. She was looking at the SLR Digital's but I think that is going out of the budget. I guess it will be 35mm. She has chosen the Canon Elan 7e. Doc, the Mrs. took the picture. She has done alot that have come out so good.

We bought a few years ago the Sony digital camera with the memory stick. We no longer have developing fees, put all our pics on the puter and after we get a lot built up on the pc we download it onto the cd disk, for storage and security. Plus, if the pics don't turn out, just delete them and there is no charge for the ones that aren't any good. If you look around, you can find the digitals for-as low as 200-250 for a 1. 2 mega pixel. I think they go as high as 6 megapixels, but the cost is much higher. Just my . 02 Don

The Fuji s5000 digital cameras can be had online for under $275, my friend just bought one. run a search on google, or try ebay.

Very, very nice, absolutely loaded, retail is over $600.

I prefer my old Nikon F3 & lenses, but use a Sony digital occasionally... .

It took me 6 months, but I finally got my mom into a digital camera. She isn't one to spend $500 w/o doing research, and that's what took the 6 months. She finally bought the Olympus C740UZ w/ the 10x optical. I wouldn't let her buy anything that didn't have 10x optical, as she takes extremely high quality and zoomed pictures of her Irises (sp?). They are all cataloged, and used to be in photo albums, but by next year they will all be on CD (they all don't bloom every year). I am going to be getting the C750UZ some time in the future, or maybe a different one. The Olympus' are great digital cameras, especially w/ the 10x optical... digital zoom is no good, as it pixilates.

Guess what though... . when you buy a new digital camera, plan on buying a new computer too! Am having a custom system built for my mom, as she's filled up her 40 gb HD in less then 5 months with her camera. Also, the 128MB ram doesn't really run Photoshop 7. 0 and AOL and two other programs at the same time! :) So now she's getting 1 gb ram, two 120 gb hard drives, and a hyper-threading processor to do it all with. :)

Take a look at the new Canon digital cams too... they're basically a digital Rebel, and all the lenses that are used on the 35mm's are interchangeable to the digital one... seems like a good idea to me. Plus, I believe it's something like 5 or 6 megapixels.

changing the subject, we have found some of the canon elan 7e's with Sigma lenses. Anyone familiar with these lenses? Does anyone have this camera and are you happy with it?

Wal mart has a new self serve machine that you can walk up to with your memory card, Compact Flash, Sony memory stick or the other one secure something I think, anyway the computer loads the images and then you can select which ones to print, how many and what size. I was against digital cameras because of the pain of conecting to the computer and downloading then printing images. When Wal Mart got this new machine I got a digital camera, the prints are downloaded to the regular print machine they use for film, the quality is great and the price is $ . 27 a print for 4X6. I do not have a great digital camera, just a Canon A70 but it works pretty well.

We bought one of those Canon A70 and it works great. We had a Kodak DX3600 I think but it got knocked out of my daughter hand at a volleyball game and did some damage. It would of probably costs a couple hundred to fix it so we just bought the Canon and it is better than the Kodak we had. Found out Kodak is the only one that would work on the camera too.

We have a Canon Elan something, we used to have a Rebel G but gave it to the mother-in-law (without my blessing:mad: ) Anyways, the Elan whatchacallit has worked flawlessly. My wife uses it mostly, she's into photography as well, so other than putting it on auto-everything mode, I can't use it. It does take nice pics, even with the stock lens.

Spend the money and get the Canon Rebel Digital SLR... you won't be sorry. Any picture you want to be printed out could be taken to Kodak and they can get a good print out of it. I have the camera and was worth the money. Perhaps you still have the old lens... if so, go for it. The money you would spend on development would evetually pay for the extra amount on the digital.
