Camparison Test? Really?

Hopefully someone out there can help me out!!! I need to get an engine delivered from northwest Iowa to Albuquerque NM. A couple of months ago I sold a 460 Ford on eBay to a fellow down there. When I inquired about his usage of the motor, I was deeply moved. I will paste his email below:

Nathan,

I am buying this motor to help with a project for the teenage men in our Cancer treatment Center. I am the Chaplain for the University Hospital Children's Hospital. I started the project last year. These boys are very sick and some will not live but a few more years. many do not have the necessary parents or relationships to help them do "Guy Stuff". So I thought about something that ALL guys like... hence... CARS!. I bought an old 1972 Ranchero in bad shape (costs is all out of my pocket). I am going to rebuild the 460 and teach the kids as we go along. I will let them get greasy and when we are finished we will look at racing it at our local drag strip. I am not a super mechanic but can hold my own. I can lay a fairly good paint job.

I just want to help these kid have a good time and help develop their self esteem while having a fun time. I also grew up around cars and men to show me how to do things for my self but these kids and struggling with life and death issues with no adult male guidance to help them. I am married and have two adult daughters... they can tunup their own cars! I have a new grandson... . someday he too will learn how to turn a wrench. Anyway... that is why I have bought the motor. I use any overtime pay I receive for these kids and our project.

I was supposed to deliver this motor and some parts a month ago. I have donated my time, delivery, and some parts free of charge. Schedule conflicts pushed delivery back a month to this weekend. Now a middle person who was involved in the delivery process has a schedule conflict. The delay is moving the delivery date into the holidays, and I am worried that this is taking too long. I got an email a couple of weeks ago that these kids measure their life expectance in weeks or days instead of years and some will not make it much longer.

I really want to get this motor there ASAP, and I am hoping that there is a person or persons who can help. If you can please PM me, reply to this post, or email at -- email address removed --

I know that the TDR is a great group of guys with a lot of contacts. My fingers are crossed that this motor makes it soon so these kids can have a truly happy holiday.

Don't know if this will help but my wife is heading to Albuquerque for Thanksgiving holidays. If it can get to Denver I am sure I can let the wife use the truck for her trip. Post, PM or email if this helps.

If my plans don't change I should be headed back to Cheyenne from Chicago 1 week from today. While there I plan on visiting a friend in the Denver/Castle Rock area. I'll send you a pm w/my phone number.

I can help

If some other guys can get it here or close to here I'll volunteer to get it to ALBQ. Come on TDR guys, lets come together to get this done. If some one in Iowa can get it to K City or so and some one there get it to sw Kansas, I'll get it the rest of the way.

I can make a Amarillo - ABQ leg any time before the 19th of Nov.

FYI: we have no local drag strip, It was closed by the state 2 yrs ago and a new one is still quarter mil $/ 2yrs away. Nearest ( local ? ) strip is 200+ miles in ROSWELL.

The delivery

About the only real hangup is the transfer of the motor from one guy to the next. The motor is complete and tied to a pallet, so a hoist is recommended/needed. I think the whloe works weighs about 700 lbs, and I don't want anyone's tailgate getting wrecked/broken in the swap. I have an engine hoist, tractor/loaders, and a semi wrecker with a large boom on it, so loading at my end is no problem.

Glhs can get it out west sometime around Veterans Day, but BarryG does not have access to a hoist and will not be headed to ABQ for a couple weeks after glhs could drop it off. So the motor would be riding around in BarryG's truck for a couple weeks before delivery to ABQ.

I have a contact from ABQ that can meet me in Oklahoma City on the afternoon of the 23rd, but I have a very very important family obligation early in the morning of the 24th. The scheduling will be super tight and I am not sure if I will be able to stay in the travel window on the return leg because of towing back a cadillac. Murphy's Law seems to strike everytime I travel, so I am not thrilled about racing the clock.

The Chaplain does have an engine hoist. He said if he knows the motor is coming into town that he will be ready to get it unloaded ASAP. Anyone else out there with any ideas or offers???

FWIW, Con-Way shipped my 6bta (1100 lbs) from Wisconsin to Dallas TX for $200 on the corprate rate. Maybe we would do better donating some money if we can get a similar rate. I am in.

engine delivery

Hey Nathan, I live in central Ia so it wouldnt be a problem for me to run it down to Texas or out to Colorado to meet someone, BUT my truck is still in the midst of being rebuilt from my engine fire:( :( and I'm going down to Knoxville to get my last trip of replacement parts form Lambirths so I should be done with my truck by the end of the week. I also have relatives by Storm Lake so that would work out pretty good I think. If you want me to help just gimme a call. I'll be happy to help kids less fortunate than we are because after reading that I feel very fortunate to be where I am today and I wish those kids were as fortunate as I am. Sometimes we take things for granted and dont appreciate what we have and how well we have it. I would be very glad to help someone who needs a brother or friend anyday.

Castle Rock Transfer

Guys,

I was telling Tyler West of Colorado Diesel Emmissions about the motor... . He does not have a computer at the shop and asked me to post to you guys. .

They have an engine hoist and if that not big enough they can borrow a fork lift. . They would be glad to take the engine off of the inbound truck and then transfer it to Barry's truck later...

Their phone # is 303-660-9986

Ask for Tyler. .

Nathan:

With that post from Fuzz, Colorado Diesel is right down the street from me. I should have thought of them. It would still have to sit in the back of my truck for a couple weeks until delivery but as I said before I don't mind if you or the buyer don't (they might even be willing to let it sit at their shop as well they are great guys there). Let me know.

BAD NEWS...

I just got off the phone with glhs. He was just involved in an accident with his truck. Someone hit him in the side on the rear axle. He lost the driveshaft, broke his springs, and a wrecked a tire assembly. :( Anyone have a spare Dana 70 with limited slip...

He will get the truck fixed out there, then we will see what happens next. He had a hoist and all, and was able to store the motor if need be too. :(

Any more volunteers or offers??? Having donations to ship the motor could be a hassle. The shipping date would have to be preset and probably a much later date too.

Thanks for all of the help guys. I am sure that if anyone has some spare 460 performance stuff to donate or sell, it would be appreciated. Also aftermarket tires, rims, 9" rear spool/locker/posi , etc could also be needed down the road.

Little deeds in great numbers outdo great deeds in little numbers.

If the pony express could deliver mail from Kansas City to California ----

Let's do a relay.

I'm in NW Arkansas and need to go to Oklahoma City soon.

OK - so where is the engine right now?? I should be able to make a run from Albuquerque to about a 600 mile radius this coming Sunday and Monday, if necessary. And take the engine to Nathan.

ok gentelman this doesn't look like it's going to well but I live in central Nebraska and if someone could get it this far I'd be willing to get it to Colorado . Good luck Seth

Sorry guys

There may be a slim chance yet. I called my dad and he said he could drive here to Chicago and pick up my truck. He has a 97 Dodge CTD and a 20' flat bed trailer. As soon as the insurance adjuster can take a look at it (24-48 hrs) I'll let everyone know.

I hope they don't total it. :(

My girlfriend and I were fine. It felt slightly harder than a bumper car. The other driver had a 98 Chevy Cavalier. Her airbags went off and there was GM plastic all over. It definitely scared the heck out of her.

I changed the LR tire, threw the driveshaft in the bed, locked the hubs, put it in 4WD and drove home going about 20 mph.

I talked with my wife about this on the way home tonight - if any one can get the engine to Amarillo or Denver, we can leave Sunday morning to go get it at either location. I'll put a couple of 2/12s and some 3/4 plywood or particle board in my bed - the 2/12s to slide it from one bed to the other without hurting either tailgate and the plywood/particle board for this motor to rest on on the way to Albuquerque.

I figure that if we back the trucks tailgate-to-tailgate and lay the 2x12s from bed to bed across the tailgates, we won't hurt either one. Then slide it into the front of my bed on the plywood and tie that sucker down and roll. I can deliver it to the Chaplain Tuesday evening after work.

Let me know - I'll take I40 east from Albuquerque to Amarillo or I25 north from Albuquerque to Denver. Either way, it's a 6 - 8 hour drive one way.

Guys, let's get that thing to one city or the other - I'm ready to roll.

current update

Hello all

At the moment, I am working with glhs to get the motor to Cheyenne. His truck was just wrecked away from home, and he more than likely will get his truck towed from Chicago to Cheyenne on a trailer. I can meet him along his route and get the motor loaded. He has a shop with the equipment to get the motor loaded onto its next deliverer. If someone can get to Cheyenne and then to Albuquerque, then all that is needed is a definite go from glhs.

Any more who could be in on a contingency plan?
