Can anyone tell me whats happening??

Hi guys: And A happy halloween. Can anyone tell me what is most likely going one with my breaks? They are just fine at speed. but when I slowly stop for a light or for any reason. The pedal gets very hard to press down. If I have to hit the breaks fast, they work great. But ir I can slow down in time, I will creep up to the intersection on a slow roll. That's when the pedal gets hard on me. I suspected the vacuum pump, and went to NAPA to get a price on a REBUILT one :--) $486. 00!!!!! So here I am trying to save the money. Any help?? the 1st gen trucks have a vacuum booster on them? i thought they always had hydroboost on them... . ?

2nd gens have hydroboost.



Get yourself a vacuum gauge and pull the line going to your brake booster. Plug the gauge in here and start her up. You should be reading a pretty good vacuum if you pump is good. Mine reads about 25" vacuum at idle. I think the manual says you should at least have 10" at idle. Any less than that could indicate it is your pump. Otherwise, I would suspect the brake booster. I have had major problems with rebuilt boosters. I have had several that were bad right off the shelf.

My father's '95 just had a Booster unit replaced because of the same problem, all is fine now.

im with them about the booster. but for 480. 00 id switch over to hydroboost myself.

Sound like the vacume is low. On my 93 I turned the idle down too low and on a hill at 600 rpms the brake pedal is rock hard from low vacume...
