I have a bad rear bearing in the OD housing. I have the trans on the bench, and it is obvious, a rattle grind in the back half.

Can I just remove the tail housing (OD hosing) from the front, main case to service that bearing?

We removed the small cover on top, spread apart the Snap ring, and have been working it apart a bit, but I think I am missing something, or it is bad stuck.....

I do see I must pull the pan to loosen the park rod.

The trans is a "fresh" rebuild, but obviously he missed something in the OD housing!

The OD housing should come apart from the front case without too much effort. Once apart you should be able to service the OD unit. We always take them apart with the "parking rod" in park

Yes you can but, be careful how far you take it down there is a 800# spring in there. And if turned the internals need to be re-clocked to go back on the transmission.

it is pulling the park rod out with it (we have it about 3/4" apart, and the shifter is now in "D- pretty soon it will be in "Low" and be out of travel, so we stopped to ask you guys for advice)

As for easy, my son is holding the "snap ring" apart, (which seems to make no difference) while I pry on the case with a pry bar to force them apart..... they are separating, but not easy...

I had a shop rebuild the trans- took him 8 months, total idiot, now out of business. I am sure something was not installed right or came loose in the OD Section.

Ok, we did get the OD section off the transmission. Had to use pry bars to pry them apart. Now trying to put back together, and have the same problem. All parts slip back together up to about the last inch, then stop. We took the OD clutch back out of the tail housing to try and see, and as you can see, it stops about 1" short.

Are you supposed to FORCE them together??

BTW, this is my "old" 1996 Truck , the first Diesel I every bought (I now have a few). It loud, fast, and ugly as hell. To be honest, I think it is worn out (395,000 miles) but my 16 year old son has loved the truck since day one, and wants more than anything to have it.

I told him if he wants it, he has to fix it, but I would help 100% of the time. So it is a "father/Son Project" and I want it to have a happy ending! I have been in a few transmissions, but I am no expert!

This is a DTT transmission (or was before the local shop rebuilt (Ruined) it.

i am no expert but it looks like something is just not lining up. i know when i rebuilt a few eaton 9 speeds with splitters in them the tail section that contained the splitter would act like that sometimes. it might just be one of those things you need to keep playing with then when you least expect it it will fall in with ease.

This is from the 99 service manual

INSTALLATION

(1) Be sure overdrive unit Alignment Tool 6227-2

is fully seated before moving unit. If tool is not

seated and gear splines rotate out of alignment, overdrive

unit will have to be disassembled in order to

realign splines.

(2) If overdrive piston retainer was not removed

during service and original case gasket is no longer

reusable, prepare new gasket by trimming it.

(3) Cut out old case gasket around piston retainer

with razor knife (Fig. 33).

(4) Use old gasket as template and trim new gasket

to fit.

(5) Position new gasket over piston retainer and

on transmission case. Use petroleum jelly to hold

gasket in place if necessary. Do not use any type of

sealer to secure gasket. Use petroleum jelly only.

(6) Install selective spacer on intermediate shaft, if

removed. Spacer goes in groove just rearward of

shaft rear splines (Fig. 34).

(7) Install thrust bearing in overdrive unit sliding

hub. Use petroleum jelly to hold bearing in position.

CAUTION: Be sure the shoulder on the inside diameter

of the bearing is facing forward.

(8) Verify that splines in overdrive planetary gear

and overrunning clutch hub are aligned with Alignment

Tool 6227-2. Overdrive unit cannot be installed

if splines are not aligned. If splines have rotated out

of alignment, unit will have to be disassembled to

realign splines.

(9) Carefully slide Alignment Tool 6227-2 out of

overdrive planetary gear and overrunning clutch

splines.

(10) Raise overdrive unit and carefully slide it

straight onto intermediate shaft. Insert park rod into

park lock reaction plug at same time. Avoid tilting

overdrive during installation as this could cause

planetary gear and overrunning clutch splines to

rotate out of alignment. If this occurs, it will be necessary

to remove and disassemble overdrive unit to

realign splines.

(11) Work overdrive unit forward on intermediate

shaft until seated against transmission case.

(12) Install bolts attaching overdrive unit to transmission

unit. Tighten bolts in diagonal pattern to 34

N·m (25 ft-lbs).

(13) Install speed sensor.

(14) Connect speed sensor and overdrive wires.

(15) Align and install propeller shaft

Well, it is a 96 (but I am sure it is the same) and I have been unable to locate that section in my old stained shop manual! Just shows how to assble the OD unint, but never gets to the "putting it back on" part (that I can find)

I need one of those tools!

There are 2 sets of splines in the overdrive section that slip over the intermediate shaft, 1 on top of the other. If they are not exactly lined up it will be difficult if not impossible to put together. Try lightly tapping the output shaft onto the intermediate shaft with a rubber mallet or a block of wood. If not the overdrive section will have to be compressed to remove the snap ring holding the 800lb spring so tou can turn the splines so they line up and then put it back together. Use a press for that or it could kill you.

I see the tool is about $134. 00...

But, I did take (about 50) pictures of the inside, trying to see the problem. And sure enough, If you look real close, you can see the two splines are out, but just a few thousands of a inch.

I know it was a PTA to get it off. But when we push them together, it feels like it is "stuck" (maybe trying to start together)

should I try to push them together, or buy the tool the tool and see if I can take it apart, get it closer, and do it again... . Can it get closer than shown in the picture below? If it could get it partway, could I put a strap wrench on it and rotate it (overcome the spring)

I do not have a arbor, but I do have holes in my bench, with threaded rods and plates to "press" down.
