Just filled my truck today, because the National news is saying that fuel prices are going much higher due to hurricane Rita than it did due to hurricane Katrina. My fuel light had just come on and in the past when it come on it will take 31 gals of diesel. Today it took 36 plus gals. I did fill it to the very top. Are fuel pumps always calibrated? Or did I get victimize by my local Service Station?

I've heard of people putting a little more than the rated capacity in the tank. I wouldn't immediately assume the pump is miscalibrated... but it could be. Only way to tell would be to go back to the same pump with a 5 gallon jug and measure it carefully.

I get more than it's rated for in mine, but if it's cool out when I fill and supposed to be getting hotter, I wont fill it that far.

Expansion is a real mess. :(

PS mine's a 2nd gen, and I havent modded anything.

My SWB factory tank with vent mod is rated at 34 I've put 35. 6 in it.

I don't take it too low.

When the overhead shows 0 on the DTE screen that tells me it's time to fill up.

Personally, I think there are some stations that have their pumps way off. How else can you get 40 gallons in a 35 gallon tank? In another thread there are guys claiming to put up to 45 gallons. I think they are getting ripped off at the tank. I just filled my tank and got 31 in it with my DTE at 0. I filled up a 5 gallon can and when I got home, i nursed another 2 gallons in. That is it. It is up to the top of the filler.

Grizzly: I have put as much as 37. 6 gallons in my tank. I use a tank of fuel in 5-7 days every week of the year. I can't afford to leave the 7-10 gallons that are typically left behind when the auto shutoff stops the pump. Since I drive so much so quickly, I have not yet had any expansion problems.

I just did the vent mod on my Dodge 04. 5 LWB and the most before the mod I but into the tank was about 31 gal diesel with low level light on. after doing mod I added 5 gal of diesel to the tank and drove to the service station about 9 miles. There I added 38. 1 gallons of fuel to the top of the fuel cap, so I figure the tank now holds about 42 gallons of diesel.

I've never let my truck go much under 1/4 tank. Usually I put 20-25 gallons when it's at 1/4 tank. Get about 350 miles on that.

My Jeep is a 23 gallon tank, today I put 21 gallons, and I still had 1/4 tank

the reason you can get more in the tank is because the tanks are bigger than they are rated because of the venting systems. my ford tank was rated at 29 gallons i could get almost 35 galons in it by filling it to the neck. ford and dodge do not give the rated capacites from the filler neck they are from the vent system. there may be some pumps that are off also but I have filled up at many stations and all were very close to the same. also the guys that are getting teh really high numbers probably damn near run the tank dry. ;)

Tank Capacity

The book says 35 gallons for my truck. I have not done the vent mod. I regularly put 38-39 gallons in and that is full to the top. REMEMBER----When DTE shows 0 there is 8% of a tank left. On my truck that is 2. 8 gallons. The worst mileage ever was 18(most of my driving is empty). That would be 50. 4 miles. I once went 67 miles beyond DTE0--I forgot to fill-up and was late to work so I just drove and said "We'll find out the hard way. " That was the best I ever got, 22mpg and that fill-up took 38. 4 gallons.

I guess the best way to find total capacity would be (risky!!) fill a couple of 5 gallon cans with fuel and run truck until it sputters. Dump in fuel, reset computer, go to familiar station and fill up. For those less than adventurous I have repeatedly been told by reliable sources that the tank on my truck will take 42 gallons to fill if I run it dry.

Last week I filled up and it read that I put in, put in 38. 9 gallons. I really dont know what to think about that one.

Whats this Fuel vent mod you talk about???

I spoke to the Service Station Manager where I put 36 gallons of diesel in my 35 gal tank. He agreed to have all his pumps calibrated. The pump I used was found to be in error and I was reimbursed for 4 gallons.

Congrats! Now all the 40+ gallon boys need to do the same!

Get spooled-up's fuel tank vent kit. It will save you time and frustration. I spent 13 years nursing fuel into my '91 F250 and never got both tanks full... What a pain in the arse! Now, with the kit in my CTD, it's almost fun to fill up at the fastest nozzle position... except for the price.
