Tribute to the fallen

I've been wearing Chrhartt jackets for close to 20 years. One thing that I always liked was the fact that they were a symbol of American made clothing. Indeed the tag even had a union label on it. Another thing I liked is their customer service. I am pretty hard on my clothing, and in both cases both of my jackets broke their zippers.

About 8 years ago, I lamented to my work uniform dealer about this, and he gave me a 800 phone number to Carhartt. They were happy to repair jacket #1 and they did send a postage paid bag and they sewed in a new zipper. I sitll wear #1 today, and like an old pair of jeans, is great! I was sold on Carhartt for life!

Jacket #2 which was purchased in the above scenario at the uniform store, which served well also, was US made. This zipper broke but in a different way after 8 years. I called them back, and was met with the same friendly customer service. This time was a little different, however. They didn't offer to repair the same jacket. They offered to replace the whole jacket if the claim was acceptable. When I heard this, I turned a little skeptical but held my breath. I was real curious about the jackets being made here anymore since they admitted to not doing repairs any longer. They emailed me a tag, and I sent it out. Sure enough, after a phone conversation, I recieved a new jacket in short time.

This is bittersweet because while I did get a new item, it's made in Mexico and of course the union label is gone.

As I gave this some thought, I recalled many moons ago talking about work clothes in general and for a while Dickies was good until they went south. Now Carhartt.

What's left for patriotic people to wear?

Doesn't that beat all. Carhart has been running some tv ads recently that were all apple pie, dogs, trucks, handshakes, work hard, made in America themed. Guess maybe they should watch some of their own ads.....

I was at the local sears the other day and picked up a small simple claw hammer. On the big craftsman tag was something like "AS always made in the USA". On the handle just above the rubber grip had a large sticker that said made in taiwan. which one is true, i have a good guess... ...

Where I work we still make products in the USA. However, more and more components are being sourced outside the country, mostly Asia. Our purchasing managers get paid big bonuses and promotions to source off shore.

You think that will change? Not likely.

I remember when Al Gore was V. P. He was giving a speech someplace, in this speech he asked the question "why would we grow our own food when we can buy it from other countries"? While this Carhart deal is most likely due to labor cost, it still doesn't take away from the fact that Al Gore was and is a moron! Seems to me this country doesn't produce much of anything anymore. Sad deal. .

Those Tv ads really infuriate me, too. n ViceGrip/Channelock is running the same type of ads after killing the Nebraska town that made them a success and sending the jobs to china.

The advertising executives plainly see that if you shovel enough of it and stack it high enough, there will always be enough people who believe it to make your dreams of avarice come true. Just look at politicians if you doubt that.

I seen a piece on the History channel on NEW BALANCE SHOES. Made in the USA piece by piece, 58 steps to make a shoe. Good deal, I'll buy my wife some SOME NEW SHOEs. Look to see where they were made, you guess it MADE IN CHINA.

All the above sum up my feelings real well. I spent big $$ on Red Wing shoes about 4 years ago and settled on a number I was real happy with. I get a shoe voucher every two years and they give a little to get shoes. I went back recently to get another pair to find out after I got them that they were outsourced too.

I just feel that someday the USA will have to fend for itself, perhaps like it did in WWII, and it won't be able to.

I'm really trying to support the cause but it's becoming impossible... Ross Perot was right about "the giant sucking sound"

I have been wearing Whites and Westcoast Boots for 40 years in the loggers style. My last pair are Chippewa made in the USA. I think they are all still made here but not sure... .

Sad thing about manufacturing in general.

The politician have made it more profitable by excessive legislation here in the US.

My parents buy sneakers made in Maine. I forget the brand. New Balance maybe?

I have redwing boots. My last job used to buy me a pair a year. I got mostly crap like stone age etc etc.

Once I got the redwings I never wore the others again. :D

White's Boots!!!

NIsacs,

Quite a few years ago, I heard about White's Boots & didn't want to go through life without owning one pair of hand-made boots. I had met a guy that just raved about his. I'd been talking to him about my Danner's & he said that he had used Danner's & thought the White's were better.

The White's I wanted were the Cowboy Packers, which, is what I ordered. I love them. They are very well built with bullet-proof leather.

Twice, I've had the opportunity to go through Spokane, WA. where the factory/showroom is located. The first time I stopped by, the sales person wasn't busy & took me on a personal tour of the factory. What a treat!!! Got to talk with some of the hand made boot builders. Very enjoyable to watch true artisans. Gave me an even greater respect & enjoyment of my purchase.

BTW, I always enjoy reading your posts. I live in the Phoenix area & used to go up to the White Mountains AZ. very regularly. Beautiful country!!!

I did OK at work, but I dont think they'd have gone for Whites.

Besides everything had to be "explosion proof" grounded, steel or composite toe etc. etc.

I didnt make enough to justify a purchase like that either. I can have a lot of fun with $500.

Thanks Joe!

Yes it is nice up here in the summer, however I love the desert in the winter and hope to spend time there when I am fully retired. The Whites are a loggers prestige thing, kinda like driving a Pete or KW with Cummins power, NO Detroits!!:-laf

What I like about the Whites, Westcoast Boots and even the Chippewa is there is no breakin period, they fit from day one.

When was the last time you checked in at Red Wing? I hope they are still making your model here.

I first heard about White's a few years back here on the TDR. It would be a sin to subject those to what mine see at work. I'd like a pair of White's someday as my "clean" boots.

I own three pair of Whites. The first pair fixed my "sore heel" problem that cortisone injections didn't. The second were for climbing telephone poles. I really, really, really, like mine. The last are Pac Boots, also for climbing poles, never had to climb with them, but they are excellent Pac's.

I used to buy, 'FeatherLites', shoes from Sears, they were still made in the USA when all the others were Korea, now China, they eventually went to, 'Made in the USA of foreign parts', or something like that, now the last time I looked they are made in China. About 15 years ago I was looking at dress shirts on Sears, there were two of the same color, same pattern and cloth, the $22. 00 ones were made in China, the ones made in the USA were $20. 00, and they were regular price, not "Sales", and they were both 'Arrow" brand.

Moan all you want of the price of Gas and Diesel but the USA exports both, and did so during the oil crisis, and exports are increasing, thus helping our balance of payments. Read the Financial pages, and leave the gossip and political pages to the uninformed and poorly educated. (let's keep them that way).

Channellock is made in Meadville Pennsylvania. Vice Grip and Irwin are together, no doubt owned by somebody else.

That's what I thought. Vise Grip sold out to China and is no longer made here (so I don't buy them anymore). Someone please tell me Channellock is still made here!

It's getting tough. A few weeks ago I bought a Williams ratchet online. Imagine my surprise when I received it and it was "Made in Taiwan". Thank you very much, Snap-On, for buying the name and promptly shipping them overseas.

Be careful when you buy Nicholson files, too. I've heard they have 2 separate lines - one from China and one still made here.

Can't buy Milwaukee power tools anymore - they're all Chinese now.

-Ryan

P. S. I returned the ratchet and will get a Wright instead.
