I went to the dealer today for my 6000 mile oil change and mentioned that the white smoke problem was not getting any better. Well, the rocket scientest at the dealer told me to ditch the converter! I asked if it would cause any warranty issues and he said NO. Now, how many of you out there have disposed the cat converter on your rig? did you notice an increase in mileage? Was there less white smoke? My guess is that this is the dealers way to get out of fixing a common problem with all the 600-610 Cummins. . Comments??? I think I may give it a try at the local muffler shop, by having the converter cut off and fittings welded on to each end. Then having a pipe with the same fittings welded together and bolted into the place of the converter. Then, should I ever get stupid and move to an area that actually makes you smog your car, Ill be able to reinstall the converter with 4 bolts. I would really like some comments. I would also like anyone of you out there that are associated with a Dodge dealer and see if your dealer has a problem with removing the converter. . Thanks in advance! :D

I noticed a major drop in MPG. For some reason I just can't keep my foot off the skinny pedel. I just love the sound of a stright piped diesel. When the wife's with me the truck gets 18- 20 mpg on the hwy with 315 tires and 4:10 gears.

im not sure but i know that some muffler shops wont pull it cause its illegal. i talked to a guy here and even though we dont test law says its illegal to remove an emissions device. bet they wouldnt pull it. you could hallow it out though

How do you remove the cat to hollow it out? Remove the clamp at the turbo and before the muffler section, on the muff. sec. will it come off without cutting it? How's the flow affected with a large area in the middle of the system? I know it's gotta flow better than the cat intact but will it flow better or the same as a cat delete or aeroturbine in it's place.

Anyone else?? Im willing to try anything that may improve mileage and get rid of the white smoke

I haven't been able to get an answer on this. For those of you guys that ditched the the cat:

Did you cut the downpipe to remove it or did it come off? Did you have to cut a slip in the coupler on the front of the cat to get the crimp to release? Heat with torch?

I do not have a torch. I would prefer to be able to get it to come off without destroying it as well, as they're $900 to replace (should I ever want to put it back on).

I'm planning on running a 4" straight pipe and I want it installed the day I bring my truck home from the dealership, I just need to plan ahead for this thing :)

I cut mine with a sawzall and put a resonator in place of it. Was pretty straight forward. Removed stock muffler as well and installed straight thru muffler. Only thing I had to do was to weld new hangers, if thats not an option you could probably buy the parts already welded on .

PJ , your truck is new and regardless of what that mechanic told you i would not remove the cat having a warranty. One of the many forms i signed when buying my new truck was the one which states something to the effect of that is unlawful remove or tamper with emmision control devices. I believe you will have warranty issues if the service maagers desides to push it.

I personally don't care for cat converters but dont want to give the dealer any reason to deny me warranty coverage, besides you're in California which has some higher emmisions standards . Don't do it , my $. 02.

Good luck.

Actually, Im in Oregon and that is where my truck is registered. I have a ranch in Chico Calif and one in Edmond Oklahoma. I never really plan to pay the overpriced DMV of Calif when I can register my truck in Oregon for 4 years for $50. As for the pulling of the cat, as mentioned in the first post, it was the dealer that suggested it. If I choose to do so, i will get it in writing from the service manager that it will not effect my warranty. I was just asking if anyone else had tried this yet and what was their outcome.

As far as the EPA of Calif... . $crew them

I second that and like to add the Endangered Species act as well ,but won't go on about it.

Hangers are no biggie, I have a MIG welder, just no torch.

Should be perfect then, sawzall kitty off, cut exhaust behind muffler, remove stupid, heavy mess, install straight pipe in its place, weld hangers from stupid heavy mess onto new straight pipe and call it done.

I would not trust what the dealer says about removing the cat. If they put it in writing that they will warranty the truck and they remove the cat, then you have some recourse.

It is against Federal law to remove factory vehicle emission equipment. Will you have a problem if you? Probably not now because diesels havent been running that type of emission equipment and are not generally inspected for such.

As bad as I want mine gone, it is still there for a while longer.

Just my two cents.

Lets not forget tourists.

Let us know if the cat-ectomy helps with the white smoke. I'm thinking it should.

That service manager would be pretty stupid to put it in writing. He would essentially be endorsing you breaking the law. I seriously doubt the cat has anything to do with your white smoke issue. They take a while to heat up and light off.

Geeezzzz, a fellow Oregonian giving me smack for shedding the cat! Must be a liberal from Portland or Ashland, the only two places in Oregon where they still smog anything (lawn mowers included) and Kerry thought he was king. When I drove my truck to a convention in Portland a month ago, i had my BUSH sticker on my back bumper. Way too many liberal #$%^&* up there gave me the number 1 sign. IM sure glad Im not a part of that end of the state! :-laf :-laf :-laf
