Hello all,

I bought a used 01 24v back in 05. 2 years ago I put the MBRP turbo back system on it. For the last two years I have not had any trouble getting my annual inspection here in TX. This year, they told me I had to have a Cat, she said she even called the Dodge house and they told her it was required. With that, she failed me on the inspection and entered it into the state database so I can't go anywhere else without it coming up on the database. After reading some posts here, it sounds like the 24v motors did not come with one from the factory. I really don't want to put one on so I was wondering if anyone had info on whether or not a cat was stock equipment on an 01. If it is required, anyone know where I can get a straight through cat?

Thanks

I went through the exact same thing last year. 12 valves had cats, 24 valve no cats, 2004. 5+ (I think) had cats. Argued with the inspection place, e-mailed Dodge and they said all 2001's needed cats (bunch of morons don't even know what their trucks were equipped with). They sent me a copy of the standard specs. sheet that says it had a cat but the sheet also said equipped with 5. 9L V8 360ci. Finally got tired of fighting and went to the local muffler shop and explained the situation. He agreed with me on the no cat thing. He gutted a used cat from a 7. 3L, cut my pipe at the muffler, slid the cat up the pipe and welded it in place. Looks like a real cat. Pathetic that other people have to go through this as well. I thought the inspection place here was the only retarted bunch that would say this. Good luck.

2001.3 OEM Exhaust

#@$%!My Truck is a 50 state emissions version sold in Oregon, came with resonator and muffler. California trucks may be different ? My truck developed a muffler rattle, so I replaced with 4" MBRP. California is going to have diesel pickup truck emission inspection in near future. I might be in the same boat ??#@$%!

Thanks for the reply. I will have to check with some shops around here and see if any will do that. I really don't want to put a Cat on, getting too good a mileage to make any changes.

Make sure the bureaucrat is looking at the 5. 9 I6, not the 5. 9 V-8 spec. Go to the dealer and ask for a cat. When the parts person can't find one, have them print the parts page (image and list) and take that back.

I wouldn't add a cat (even a gutted one) if one wasn't installed originally. I'd probably end up trying to sue them in small claims. But then I am a member of that vast right wing conspiracy mob.

This discussion came up a month ago on when the cats came and went. It was determined, early 94 did not. late 94 to 98 did. 98. 5 24 valve to 2004 did not. 2004. 5 to present did.

Calif. trucks did plus the egr valve, could not get the HO in Calif. 2004. 5 was certified Calif compliant. As I recall But I stand to be corrected with no problem.

This was all about the I6 engine of course.

Many inspection shops also call the RESONATOR a "Cat" when it is not. they see a Smaller thingy in front of the Big muffler thingy ans assume it is a cat.

I have a muffler on mine and the Inspection guys said I needed a muffler. I said did you look at the bulge in front of the axle? thats the muffler, his reply was IF YOU SAY SO. Haven't been questioned again.

I was the original owner of a Texas '01 HO/six speed 3500 Ram. The truck is still in the family. It did not and does not have a cat converter. The inspector and the Dodge dealer parts computer reader are wrong!

Like another member wrote above, the parts monkey probably didn't know (or care) the difference between a 5. 9L gas V8 and a Cummins ISB 5. 9.

Many parts counter clerks in dealerships now have no clue what they are doing or talking about. If the computer is down when you walk in most of them couldn't find a quart of oil for your car or truck. The days of the old time parts guys who were a source of information and the other half of the team with mechanics is history. They are simply clerks who look up parts on lists in their computers.

As has been mentioned the 01 did not come with a cat (unsure of the CA models). My 01 came with a resonator and a muffler, no cat.

I had the same problem with a 77 Blazer. The one I had came with the 400 instead of the 350, different rear springs etc. It was labeled heavy duty in a variety of places on the various emission stickers and even on the title and was lacking many of the then current emissions equipment. They were lacking due to its heavy duty designation and were not required. Every year when I had to get it inspected it was a hassle as they always looked up the wrong vehicle configuration. Every time I was told "I never heard of one of these before", even though I would go to the same place every year.

I recently went to get my truck inspected, a 2002 and was told it had to have a muffler, the rule which I confirmed with DPS in Austin states that if it came from the factory with a muffler, then a muffler is required. I left that place and went to another one where they passed it.

I called again this morning after reading this tread and I actually was able to talk to one of the tech guys. I asked him what would happen if I was told I needed a CAT on my truck, he said if you are told that you need to question the inspector where he got this information from. He said that under the hood is a tag that contains emission codes and this tag will state if the vehicle came with emissions. I have not looked for this tag on my truck, but will later today when I get home from work.

The tech person also mentioned that Texas is in the middle of re-writing the inspection laws, he also mentioned that as the law is written there is a gray area in regards to the turbo actually being considered a muffler, he stated they are working now to define the legal description of what a muffler is.

Here is the number that I called (512) 424-2000, take option 0, then tell then you have some inspection questions and ask to talk to one of the tech folks. The guy I talked to name was Jim, he was very willing to talk and discuss the questions I had.

Good luck, hope this helps.

You can buy small straight thru Resonators. I have a SS one on my truck ahead of the Magnaflow muffler.

SNOKING

I just did a Muffler Delete on mine, so all I have is a CAT. It is suprisingly quiet. The truck came with just a muffler and a CAT - no resonator.

My 03 DIDN'T come with it. The 05 i know for sure have them. Their is a cross brace that goes right under the cat. The 05 has a bow in it so the brace don't hit the cat. My brace does not have the bow in it it is just straight. The dealer that told the smog place you need a cat is full of S@IT. .
