Its all about the money, not the air at this point.

Anyhow... aren't the diesel cats quite a bit different in design/operation/function/purpose than gasser cats?

Just wondering if you went into DMV and paid the extra weight fees to be able to haul more than the 14,000 lb limit if that would cause an entry into the dmv system that would then make the computer not flag that truck for a smog check.

WOW, our founding fathers would be sick if they could read this thread, how silly society has become. I realize this is not the place for politics but just thought I would point out the obvious. Government rules are always very unclear, sometimes just going to a different dmv can yield different results for different people.

Yep, that is exactly what I am thinking everytime I read one of these threads. Incredible!

It is a basic tenet of the rule of law in our society that compliance with one law could not ever put one in violation of another. At least it used to be so. If California law truly states that it is illegal to install an aftermarket converter and VR is complying with that law, then he cannot be held liable for not having a converter on his truck.

It does not have to be OEM... ... . but it does have to be certified.

The weight fees on our trucks are based on empty weight not Gvw... ... so no

I went through this exact process about a year ago with my 98 12v. As you mentioned, the part is not available so you must apply for a "Part Exemption" from BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair). Contact them at 800-622-7733 and explain your situation. They will do a part search to verify that it is unavailable and will grant you a limited exemption that must be renewed every 2 years. Bring your exemption with you when you get smogged and all will be well. Best of luck.

I have a big old drum of a resonator/cat I took off of my 97 12V. I had a friend use it to get through his check.

If you wanna have a road trip and are up around the Central Coast Paso area I am more than happy to let you throw it on there for your smog check.

Heck, you buy the beer and i'll help you put it on.

I solved that problem 25 years ago. I have a ranch in the midwest and register my vehicles there. I was ticketed once and went to court. The judge asked me why I did'nt have Missouri drivers licenses. I told him I live in California and Missouri can't have licenses in both states. CDL to old probaly would'nt pass the physical. He said the next question is importain. You better answer it right. He asked. . How much time to you spend in Missouri. I told him what's half of 365. Case dismissed. Missouri requires me to have a commercial banner acknowledging my business. So I do and every one is happy. I usually register two years at a time in Missouri, and two pickup including my dodge, and two Blazers, a 97 Jeep, and a 74 U-haul truck. Total of all is cheaper than registering and smog of my Dodge in California. Opps! Forgot my motorhome too.

Interesting. I have a neighbor here in San Diego, who lives 9 months a year in Missouri. He should arrive soon as the summers there don't work for him.

I asked him why his vehicles still have Cali plates and he said the insurance is so high there,it's still cheaper to register and insure the vehicles here. He has five vehicles!

This kinda off topic, but this is exactly why I bought a 96 12v since I live in CA.

I never want to deal with the "smog" politics.
