Greetings;

Thank goodness for knowing a trusted transmission Service proprietor...

I small oil leak revealed itself at the Xfer case front, during a LOF service visit. After a call to me, for permission to 'break' the transmission-xfer case joint, they found oil had collected within that "chamber" formed by the union of those two aforementioned assemblies. Further dismantling revealed a nickel sized hole beneath the xfer case input bearing boss, due to corrosion, which spewed forth its red goodness. Hmmm, alrighty then.

They took the xfer case to their trusted aluminum & magnesium weld shop for repair. No joy. The hole was too large [including the extensive thinned area around it] & too close to the input bearing support casting boss to repair. Alrighty then, another phone call to inform me these front xfer case covers were on very few shelves and none were used. Whilst waiting for parts, they dismantled the xfer case, washed & inspected all internals & prepped it for final assembly. The mechanicals were like new, no signs of any abnormal wear patterns, etc. No mechanicals required replacing after 226,078 miles - whahoo! They sprayed the now exposed mating halves with a varnish to help prevent this again 10 years from now!

Two days later "Clyde" was returned to service; $598 for the case, $54 for seals, $440 labor = $1,160.

My wife was shocked & I was poorer but quite happy, as we were leaving for Florida in 10 days. I shudder to think of the emotional stress I luckily avoided.

 Any pictures available?? That is a first for me, and I've seen some pretty impressive forms of art instilled by * calcium chloride  I would honestly rather they didn't even treat the roads. Send the plows out to push away what they can during the storms and on the days that it warms up, and call it good. So what if it takes everybody a little longer to get where theyre going... .

I think that Transmission Digest's Mike Weinberg just did a write up about salt water flood damage to a transfer case, completely rotted the metal destroying the case. Copy is at work, I'll try to locate and maybe add details.

Amazing what the salt can do. It's even more spectacular now that they pretreat the roads with that liquid "beet juice" or whatever they call it.

They use beet juice and molasses here as well. Supposedly helps the calcium chloride and/or brine stick to the roads better... . and my truck as well
A few winters ago we got a tow plow to be used on the major highways. Pretty neat to watch, I got stuck behind it one night in a bad storm. When hes all stretched out there is over 20 feet of blade, your not going around it unless your willing to go through the ditch to do it :D
Most people are surprised we even have a need for something like this, our county has the highest average snowfall in the state at around 160 to 180 inches a year. Some years we've seen well north of 200, while others have been pretty mild... . Something about being right on the lake, and the way the fronts come in that our area in particular gets pounded while 40 miles inland you can still see grass.
There's much bigger ones out there than this, but this is the one we have.

Now whose ready for winter? :-laf

Yes, but pics are on the phone, arghhh. I've got some good documentation to upload, maybe tonight? Thanks for watching.

D4L,

Neat that ODOT posted the video, never seen a plow like that. I did see a CAT grader (IIRC) that crabbed to do slopes and stuff. I had to see where Andover is, been to Pyumatuming years ago and even to Pierpont for the festival they have, really a neat festival. Couples cross cut competition, plowing, log pulling for accuracy all kind of old time skills. We enjoyed it.

Gary

You must be talking about Pioneer Days in Pierpont. I lived within 5 or 6 miles of there for 10 years before moving to Andover to be closer to the school for the kids. Thats neat that youve been up this way, not too many people even know where little ol Ashtabula County is... . :-laf Thats fine with me, I love being in the country and the peace and quiet.

:)

I had to adjust my earlier post, my snowfall numbers were a little skewed. I had Wyoming, "my other home" on the brain. Were not quite in the big leagues like they are :D

DFL,

Yup, thats the one. We actually spent the night on the grounds in a tent with our then 2 yr old daughter, she won 2nd place in the beauty pageant dressed as a farm girl not a white dress princess like many others. That was pure accident. The kids had a treasure hunt for candy in a pile of sawdust. All just good times.

Camped at Puymatuming SP on the OH side lonnnng time ago and just got a OH flag for the front of the Airstream, lots of folks already asked what flag is that? Looks darn good thank you very much.

We grew up in western Cuyahoga County and know about the snow belt from Dick Goddard's TV8 weather reports for years. Today I snacked on some Trail bologna and have a couple bottles of Great Lakes left from a recent trip by better 1/2. Now, can we get some REAL maple syrup please!!!!!

Sent you a P. M. Gary.

Sorry for getting off topic Walter  I would be interested in seeing pictures of the carnage when you get the chance!
