I just went on a Bombvoy with the Northwest Bombers this last weekend and now I need to get a CB.

Any recommendations on CB, Antenna, etc. Not too high priced just something that will work well.

Where is a good place to mount it that won't interfere with shifting, getting in and out. On the right side under the steering wheel I have my Brake controller.

Thanks, Joe

I believe there is a member here that makes a mount for cb s that goes attatches onto the middle seat.

So far as the brand of cb goes, any of them do a decent job.

Personally I have a cobra and it works great.

Antenna depends on whether you want a temp mount or permanent.

Im changing the antenna I now have from a thru the window mount to a Wilson mag mount.

Wilson 1000 Or 5000 Don't Skimp On The Antenna

And Tune The Antenna For Swr

A Cheap Radio Will Sound Great With A Good Antenna

But A Great Radio Will Sound Crap With A Cheap Antenna

Never Skimp On A Antenna Get The Best

K40 No It's Junk Cobra Antenna No Huslier Yes Wilson Yes Firestick Yes Astatic Maker A Good Antenna Good Luck

Try Copper Cb Radio Forum

Copper Electronics

Antenna Location

We have a CB store here in town, maybe I will get over there this weekend.

Where is the best place to mount antennas? Are two better then one?

How about online sources for CB and antennas?

Joe

I bought some stuff for a friend and myself from www.claysradioshop.com. I bought my Cobra 29series w/weather from Amazon.com. Probably should've bought the radio from Clays and had them tune before delivery. If you're only looking at Bombvoy communication the smaller cheaper units should work great. My friends have gassers. I needed the longer range to reach them. They tend to fall behind on hills. The weather channels work great for me in the mountains. Not all antennas are capable of Noaa.

TDR member Big Bob sells a 3rd Gen mount. Here's mine.

I have seen Big Bobs mounts in several trucks. . they look like "first class", gonna have to get one myself one of these days. Try a PM as I'm not sure if he has updated his e-mail address here.

I have a Cobra with the all-in-one mic-got it from Camping World-they are regularly on sale. The remote mount box is nice and small, all you have around the dash is the cord and mic. I put in an external speaker, the speaker in the mic is a little too tinny sounding for me, it plugs into the remote box. It also has the weather radio. I am running a 3' firestick antenna, spring and ball mount. I have a panic rack, made a bracket for a ball mount. Ran the coax down the backside of the bed into the back of the cab at the corner, drilled a hole and used a rubber grommet/silicone sealant. All my wiring is run out of sight under the carpeting. Made a nice clean install. I have the painless wiring from Genos, so making aux electrical connections is nice and easy too. If I had a bigger cb I would have gotten one of those Bobs Mounts.

Hi Joe, me again:). I use this radio, http://www.cobra.com/index.php?page=shop/flypage&product_id=5&id=1 , nice and small and I have had lots of complaments on how good it sounds. Camping world has them on sale sometimes for under $100. 00.

I also use this radio. the controller/antenna box is mounted under the driver seat and power is from the seat controls. I use a thru-the-glass antenna. Not the best antenna but then I only use the radio in caravan situations or when launching my boat, hooking up trailer, etc. It will reach out about 3 miles on the open highway. I don't need to talk from California to Alabama!!!

Two antennas are used to phase the transmitt signal and force the transmitted energy to the front and rear of the truck, effectively extending the range in those directions and minimizing the range to the left and right of the truck. In order for these dual antenna systems to work, they need to be 8 feet apart. Easy on a Semi to do when mounted to thier mirrors, but it looks rediculous on a pickup truck. If mounted closer or further apart, then they aren't phased right and are much less effective.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I will start shopping around.

Hi Bob, I couldn't get the link to work. I will try again in the morning when I get to work. Man talk about an expensive weekend. One little trip with the bombers and I am craving a Smarty, I want a CB, the Smarty will probably cause the need for a new Southbend Clutch. I guess it will be never ending from here on out.

Here is a picture of one of the CB/Ham Radio mounts I make. I make them for all 3rd Gen trucks.

Call Rip. I think he has the mount that Bob makes and he is local to you. He is also a NWB. He can also fix you up with all the stuff your looking for and than some.

I had the Cobra 75 series in my 96'. I wasn't impressed with it. However, if it's going to be used once or twice a year it might be ok.

I am already trying to find some time to go see Rip for a Smarty test drive.

Hi Bob,

I got the link to work. It looks like a nice little unit. Have you been pretty happy with it? What kind of Antenna are you using, and where did you locate it at?

I've got one of those old Realistic "One-Hander" TRC-462 radios mounted under my driver's seat. All of the controls are on the mic like the Cobra, but the mic is still a standard size unit. This radio was made in Japan and actually works quite well.

I also have a remote speaker from a Motorola cell phone car kit mounted at the headlinder by my left ear, and a 9" rubber duck CB antenna on the roof running through the cab brake light area. This setup actually works really well for me, and cost me less than $50.

Rip doesn't have my CB mounts for the 3rd Gen's, however he does have them for the 2nd Gens.
