Almost all fuel is blended and shipped through a common pipe line around the country... On gasoline the local guys (tank farm) would add back to the basic fuel to give it the additives to meet say Shells standard, and other additives to meet Chevron... and the basic gasoline would go into the tankers with the additives..... I can only assume that diesel is the same... .
What I learned in a very extensive fuel class years ago is that diesel will grow bugs (a type of algae) that gasoline will not... . also, diesel will go bad faster with time than gasoline... . and any moisture in diesel will destroy the very tight tolerances used in diesel injectors over gasoline injectors... .
Like I mentioned above, we only buy were we can see the large filter on the pump (8" diameter or so and 18" long) and most of the fuel guys will write the date in the filter with a black marker so you have an idea how long its been there... .
