Is there an easy way to change this at home? What is the proper procedure? I tried this once years ago on my '97 and ended up having to take it in to have the bearing pressed off.

Yup, the center carrier bearing on the rear drive shaft. I've heard of people pounding them off with a brass punch, but mine would not budge. The last one I did I found a guy with a machine shop, guy did it for $20.

Yah, you really need access to a hydraulic press to remove the old bearing quickly and correctly.

You can tap the new bearing in place pretty easily with a special sleeve designed for the purpose, or a correctly sized piece of pipe.
