Good Day all. I have to Change the injector Pump in the truck and I'm wondering how hard it is and how long it takes?

Thanks Keith

My first inj pump swap took about 3 hrs. Its not that bad just be sure the keyway is at 12 o'clock on the pump shaft. And i didnt take injector lines #3,5,6 loose at the head you can push them very carefully against the block to get the pump out/in.

I took 2 days to do mine. I removed it on one saturday & then put the new one back in the next. I was not in a rush & spent about 4 hours each day. I spent a lot of time cleaning up oil from the engine compartment/undercairage (that stupid crank case vent, just pukes everywhere).

I then spent another 4 hours on a saturday replacing the front main seal & cleaning all the oil up that spilled out of the seal. Ive got back to the trans, Im gonna clean back to the trans tailshaft this weekend.

I'd say 3 to 4 hours with it being a first time changing one - really not a bad job. Just be careful as to not drop anything, especially the key, down in the gear housing.

The procedures and tools are described in TDR #51, p. 96. It should take several hours if the engine is clean and you have the tools at hand.

Not hard at all. Just take your time and be careful. When i took the lines off, I kept the isolaters on and took them off in pair. #6 line i had a stubby wrench to get it off. This will also help when you bleed the system. It took me 4 hours. Saved alot of money doing it myself. Oo. Good luck, Rick

I didn't take 3,5,6 off either, you can push the lines aside enough to get the pump out. The only problem I had was getting the gear off the pump shaft, a little heat did the trick. The pump has an O ring that goes between it and the front cover, I had a hard time trying to push the new pump into position. What I did was used the 4 mounting nuts to walk the pump into place. I tightened each one about a 1/4 of a turn in a criss cross pattern, the book says not to use the nuts to force it in but walking did the trick just go easy.

I do have a question about barring the engine to TDC though. When you bar it over to TDC should the key way on the pump be at the 12 o'clock position? I barred mine over to TDC and my keyway was at 6 o'clock. I got lucky that the key stayed in place.

took me a total of 4-5 hours... it can be difficult to get tools into the 4 mounting bolts, but it can be done. just make sure the keyway is up, i used a mirror while turning the engine by hand.

DO NOT go to TDC the key will be at 6 o'clock. I used a small mirrior to look through the hole the breather bottle hose neck came out of.

Sorry for the delay in replying Work is nuts. Thanks for the good information I will try to get time next weekend to do the pump.

Thanks Keith:)

The crank turns two revolutions for every one revolution of the injection pump. If you take the injection pump nut off and the key is at 6 o'clock simply put the washer and nut back on, snug down a little (not necessary to torque) bar the engine over one revolution and VOILA! Key is at 12 o'clock.

Godspeed,
Trent
