after a long bout of tring to figure out my loud chatter on my 96 12v that i've had since new, and yes i know that it is solid lift and its a diesel and yes they make a lot of noise(but good noise) the problem is solved. It turns out that my vaccum pump was indeed bad. motor still ran great but chatterd after removing the pump I found it extremely tight and missing about 6 teeth on drive gear had to remove timing cover to retreive broke pieces but was successfull. recommend stethescope . On this truck I had installed repair kit that was recommended thur club about 5 years ago. Don't know what caused problem but back to the normal chatter and loving it. Thanks for all your sugestions. spool up and be save Jim Kuhman:):)

So, did you replace the vacuum pump with a new one?? Mine had half of one tooth missing. Pete at Gould gear fixed me up pronto.

vaccum pump chatter

yes I changed the pump seeing that it was bound up new pump has a life time warranty. I also changed the water pump seiing that it had 120000 miles on original it also has a lie time warranty that's good because I plan to keep the truck the rest of my life. Wait I mean I'll keep the motor the rest of my life I don;t think the truck will last that long!!

So you was able to hear this noise with a stethoscope used on the vacuum pump? or the gear case? Did you have any issues with accessories? as a indicator? the missing teeth were was on the gear drive?
