Ever taken a look at the spaghetti of harnesses up on the firewall of your 24V? One of the wires on my ETH is a single white one which end and is tagged "PTO"...

WELL...

It looks like if you activate the feature in the ECM and then set it for say 1,300rpms, then all one would have to do is instal a toggle switch which grounds this PTO wire when flipped.

Let's see, maybe a 1/4hr of Cummins or Dealer time at the Scan Tool, a toggle switch and a few feet of wire...

or Hundreds for some of these electronic high idlers.

Gonna have to try this one out.

Only problem is you have a Dodge 50 pin ECM, not the 100 pin Cummins ECM. So I don't think it will work like "we" all would like it to. Feel free to try it tho ;)

The Cold Temp High Idle Feature is a similar feature...

and it still worked.

Talking to some folks tomorrow.

We update thread w/ findings.

Why do we have the lead on the harness Labeled PTO?

Unless it part of an unsued portion of the harness, but 50 unused leads/wires? Seems wasteful?

The ever curious...

If I am not mistaken, when grounded, the PTO wire disables some OBDII features. It does this to keep the ECM/PCM from freaking out while running a PTO.

Kat, the 100-pin ECMs kick butt. I work on larger trucks & motorhome with 275 and 300 HP ISBs, and there is so much cool stuff you can do. Even a security system, where you have to put in a code to get the engine to start! :D DC screwed us when it came down to the ECMs on out trucks. Oh well, that will be changing soon on my truck. :D

Summary: PTO wiring information

Solution:

Thanks for your E-mail message.

This office does not have the information that you need readily available,

therefore we suggest that you go to the nearest Cummins distributor and have

them advise you on the PTO connections. Remember that all warranties on the

Dodge application are handled by Dodge, therefore, work done by the Cummins

distributor will be billable to you.

Thank you for your interest in Cummins power or products. Please let us know if

you ever need assistance in locating the nearest Cummins-authorized distributor

or dealer. Please feel free to use our North American Dealer Locator

(http://www.cummins.com/service_locator/index.cfm) found on the "service

locator" link at the North America Cummins website

For service locations and Cummins Regional Offices outside North America, you

can select the region of the world in which you have an interest at

"http://www.cummins.com/index. cfm?changecountry=true", then click the "view

distributor network" button.

Let us know if you have other questions, or if away from your computer (or you

have a time-critical request that needs more urgent attention), feel free to

call us (toll-free, from North America) at 1-800-DIESELS (343-7357), or

1-812-377-5000 (toll call, worldwide, ask for 800-DIESELS).

just think of all the things that dc gave it to us on and then think of what the trucks would have been like if they would have gave them to us??????:D

Boys,

I told you guys about the PTO thing quite a while ago, but nobody seemed to care, or you thought I was nuts. The tech at my dealer, told me about it in the first place. I allready had the PS high idler at the time (which is why it was brought up by him) so it didn't matter to me, but I did relay the information here. Ask your dealer tech about it, not the service manager, he couldn't care less.

Later, Rob

It sounds good... why doesn't anybody have a good answer, other than *****ing. I drive diesels that have auto trannys ( even though they're DOT plow trucks!!) The new electronic models have the high idle set through the cruise control. . In other words, start your truck. . Idle it up , and take a coffee break in cold weather.

Surely there's got to be an "easier answer, without messing things up too much. for the average Joe. . ". !!!! I don't really want to put a manual throttle control in... . and since there's cruise already there... would make it much nice for us who don't have a warm garage. . At least the block heater kicks butt!!

Manual...

Well, I read everything I could find in the manual on this, which aint much. The switch needs to flow a positive current to the PTO lead, not ground it.

Absolutely no mention of ECM programing. Evan's right about it disabling "certain OBDII features" but that's all it says.

I have not heard back from CSP's but I'll be talking with my DC guy soon enough.

Found this interesting. . apparently, there is, or WAS a high idle feature in the chipset... just what we were looking for. Now to reverse engineer!

sorta...

I've had this done, it is a cold start/fast warm up feature, won't run at opperating temps though. And for purposes of preventing cylinder oil wash when idling via high idling, I don't know that you would want to drop cylinders from the firing order any way.
