My guess is that you will need electronic cruise contol/ pto feature to make this work. It is going to come down to whether your ECM calibration supports pto or not. You probably cannot put the newer calibrations in the older ECMs'.

If you have a newer truck and it is not working then the pto rpm may be set the same as your idle rpm, at that point a simple change of parameters is all that is needed, not a complete reflash.

The DRB tool probably is not reading it because the calibration does not support it.

As I said... . it seems to get deeper, and deeper. and more complicated. .

GIZ . I think you're on the right track, but... ... ... ... . apparently what worked for you, . . doesn't, for some of us, unless you have a GOOD dealer tech, with the dealer's computer,..... who will do this for ... ... ... ... ?? $

Leaning all the time, but... ... . there are still parts of the original question unanswered...

I'm trying guys, I really am. My dealer's being a real pain about letting me see their computer. They won't even let me set foot in the shop. When I first brought it in, I had to wait about 1. 5 hours to get the truck back, but I had other things that needed fixed while I was there.

I could only see the screen from the waiting room window. I really couldn't tell what was on the screen, but I could make out ENG / DRVTRN and Power Take Off. It took a while to find it. You may also want to find a shop that services cummins engines and get them to plug up to it. You may have better luck.

I'm trying to get through to them guys, just bear with me here. I'm really trying, but I know how it goes. Just like a kid in the candy store who can't reach the lollipop.

No luck at stealer

I made an appointment at the dealer today, took my truck in a they couldn't find anything regarding PTO. I'm not surprised, they also asked my what the thing sticking out of my exhaust manifold was (thermocouple).

If we can hand them something showing where to look, that would be great. Keep it up guys!

One more thing I forgot to mention.

The DRBIII is a hand held scanner / programmer right? The dealer had a regular desktop computer (or so it appeared) on a cart that he plugged into the truck. Maybe that has something to do with it? A cummins scanner maybe?

It may have been just a computer with manuals or something. He had it pulled up beside the truck and had something about Power Take Off on the screen.

I don't think the handheld scanners will even show the parameters if they are not available. Your best bet would be to take it to a shop that uses Insight, this could be Cummins, Freightliner, Kenworth, etc. Just ask them on the phone what diagnostic program they use. They shouldn't take more than an hour to do all the changes, if your calibration code supports PTO.

If the parameters for PTO are not available in your calibration they will show up as greyed out in Insight, and you won't be able to adjust them.

Yep, it takes a computer (lap or desk) with Cummins INSITE software to change some settings including PTO. The stuff you can access through INSITE is amazing.

Another place with lots of Cummins engine knowledge and tools is your local IH/Case dealer. Our local dealer even has an ex Cummins tech. The only problem may be the cable hookup. Sometimes they don't have correct configuration on hand.

well... . I know now that I don''t have the PTO actiivatd. Nunttin Honey, when I hiit it with the twelve volts. As was said earlier,, it must have to be activated first... .....

Wired mine up Sat.

Off to Cummins Southern Plains to have it calibrated. Will advise as to what menu features are available once done.

According to Cummins web site

the dafault setting for the PTO is 950 RPM's on setting one, so the RPM's must be set by the computer hookup.

I called Scheid diesel

Mechanic said the display for pto comes up on the screen in the cummins insight progrm. But it does not allow him to change any of the settings. He knew of no way to change or enable this feature. Why don't those of you who claim to have this feature working elaborate? I also went to my five star stealer. No luck there either with the DRB.

STRUCK OUT AT CUMMINS SOUTHERN PLAINS

Just back from sitting an hour at CSP. Argued with a mechanic about our 50pin ECM having PTO cabalilities until he pulled out a wiring schematic and I showed him the PTO lead.

Pretty much left him speechless.

He concluded saying that INCITE (SP?) couldn't access the 50pin ECM. I suspect it may have something to do with them hooking it up to the pump diagnostic lead rather than the big 50 pin itself.

Regardless.

Now talking w/ my 5star hookup.

:D Hey guys! I just read through the entire thread, and I am going to look into what I can do with INSITE. I just need to find some time, been swamped with busted PowerStrokes recently. I'll keep y'all posted.

OK heres what I found out !!!!

wire in a single pole single throw switch from pin b46 to ground

have the tech sellect the "Features and Parameters" under the adjust ment menu

slect the PTO options 1 tab to make sure the pto is enabled(if not then enable it)

slect the tab labeled "Remote pto"

in the field labled "number of remote pto set speeds"enter the number of remote pto speeds desired up to 5

in the field labeled "set speed 1"enter the desired rpm for setting 1(can be no more than max governed rpm Or min rpm)

enter the desired speed of the other 4 settings(NOTE the values do not have to be in ascending or descending order)

slect the tab labeled "application setup 1" and select the parameters "idel shutdown","override",and"shut down in PTO" as desired, enter the "time befor shut down"

Klick the ok I con and follow the on screen instructions

basicly when you do all of this you can have up to 5 pre set high idle rpm's you toggle the switch to move from 1-5 toggle (2 times setting 2)(toggle 4 more times back to 1) get the drift turn the switch off and rpm goes back to idle its kinda hard to type and read this stuff at the same time so if we could organize a mas fax arround or if some one will post them I will fax all the pages from my book to them? O YEA all this has to be done with INSITE the ecm will do some other cool stuff very interesting

So... .

Jason, you got yours to work too? Great! How did you make it work with a ground? Mine is with +12vdc. And where is pin b46 exactly? I'll have to try that approach also. Please point me in the right direction here. Any and all help is greatly welcomed here.

And yes, I found out that the guy enabled my PTO through INSITE. He won't let me see the computer, but he said he used INSITE v5. x and an INLINE II adapter and cable kit. He even mentioned that if I talked to the right people at a cummins dealer, I could get a set of my own for about $150!!! (software not included).

WHO ELSE WOULD HAVE INSITE BESIDES A CUMMINS DEALER?

That settles it, the tech I dealt with at Cummins Southern Plains needs a map and both hands to find his own butt, who else would have a INSITE that may know what they're doing?

MAD MaX

I gather now that the PTO lead is toggled to ground and left there to set the high idle then left open to return to normal operation.

turn the switch on(grounding the lead) for setting on1.

on-off-on for 2

on-off-on-off-on for 3 etc...

assuming the pto option is enabled.

Set me straight here Jason.

Late,

Mark

GIZ, WHERE DID THEY CONNECT?

GIZ, Did they connect through the diagnostic lead on your Injector Pump or to the ECM's harness?
