Can the cruse be set(in the ecm) to let you set, resume, accel, with the truck parked some thing like cruse enable min/max speed(Does this make since)(I have a lot on my mind right now DUH!)

PTO SWITCH

DESCRIPTION

This Powertrain Control Module (PCM) input is

used only on models equipped with aftermarket

Power Take Off (PTO) units.

OPERATION

The input is used only to tell the PCM that the

PTO has been engaged. The PCM will disable (temporarily

shut down) certain OBD II diagnostic trouble

codes when the PTO is engaged.

When the aftermarket PTO switch has been

engaged, a 12V + signal is sent through circuit G113

to PCM pin A13. The PCM will then sense and determine

that the PTO has been activated.

this is from the manuel. imo this means if you add a fast idler like the ps high idler, or the stick this will keep from setting any codes while the idle is high.

jstarnes.....

On my Freightliner the engine idle is set thru the cruise control just like you asked. I use it to idle up when using the blower to unload. It will set the idle to any speed up to 2100rpm's, that's what this engine is set to. Cummins, Cat, and Detroit elec. engines are all set up the same, as it pertains to cruise control setting idle speed. Someone said we can't do this on our trucks (Dodge's) 'cause it's not in the ECM. I bet it true. I hope it's there though, we just have to "find" it. if not why can't someone "write" it into the ECM? Is this possible?

I am just going to get the practical solutions hi idler, and be done with it,for the money,it beats going to the dealer repeatedly for reflashes that dont work,Now who's got the best deal on the hi idler?

Looks to me like Practical Solutions is the only one smart enough to figure out how to make the PTO high idler work :) No wonder they can charge a good price for it.

Strike One...

Well, the dealership's Diesel Guru got held up this morning, figuratively, so he did not get a shot @ my truck yet.

Will try to reschedule.

Doc: I am pretty sure the PS device manipulates the idle via the TPS sensor feedback and not the PTO functioning.

that is pretty much all the high idles does that ps offers. in essence all it does is relocate the throttle to a to that box that you can turn to set desired idle.

I saw a Dodge tow truck yesterday!! I thought he might be able to tell me something about the PTO since they need them for their set up. So I stopped and talked to the driver. He refered me to Mid America Wrecker Sales here in Denver.

This morning I went there and talked with them. I told the guy our tail of woe and asked what they did. He said that is the usual story for them and they use an after market device. :(

Sorry I couldn't post something better, but that looks like the only answer to me. Either a high idler stick or an after market widget. :{

OK

more input:

I contacted Chrysler and asked:

"Is there software to enable The PTO option on dodge/cummins? The eth/dee trucks are wired and PTO ready except for the software for the ECM. I am wanting to add a PTO device and use factory set up. What are my options. thanks for your input"

Here is the responce:

"Thank you for the recent e-mail regarding the PTO option.

There is no software required to install a PTO. Please see your selling dealer for additional information regarding the installation of the Power Take Off device. "

What gives.

Was looking at the throttle pedal this morning and took a couple foot long piece of broom handle and glued a piece of 1/4 wood dowel a couple inches long sticking out the side of one end. If you look at the area above where the throttle pedal is hinged, you will see that the dowel will fit into V area between the pedal and its mounting bracket. RPM can be set at any level you want. I then put a short piece of dowel in the other end that sticks up when the "SNOKING Custom Fast Idler" is held in the correct position to activate.

PS, used my wooden window scraper/snow brush at first, then thought, "OK, I want fast idle while I scrape the windows and brush off the snow!" Dumb and Dumber!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh well the 1/4 hole in the scrape will just fill with snow, maybe I will glue a plug in it, after all I have had it for about 20 years.

DOH! Well as long as no one was watching, right? :D

Anyway,

The welder in my Jeep has a vernier throttle cable that comes with it. Seems pretty simple and reliable. Anyone tried that? Seems like a good compromise between a stick and reprogramming this and rewiring that.....

yeah, I done the snowbrush too. . till I figgered out that I needed it twice. That's what this whole thread has been about. Simple but stupid,. . maybe. As I said in one of my earlier posts, our "big trucks" at work have this thru the cruise. . without an add on box, and they are electronic controlled too.....

Maybe simpler IS BETTER, and cheaper. .

High Idler installed

Okay guys, the dealer installed my high-idle switch yesterday, and it's not the same as I had in the '99. This one is a dial that adjusts from idle up to 1500rpm. The service manager said it's considerably more difficult to install than the old style switches that used the cruise control solenoid. I'm not much with wires and such, but if there's anyone in the Fairbanks, AK area who would like to take a look at it and decipher what was done, send me a message and we'll get in touch.

Almost sounds like the dealer installed a third party box. Like the one I was almost about to purchase. . funny, aint it..... About ready to give up on this one. . seems everybody "knows" something, but... it isn't applicable to just everyone. Looks like the best thing is the snowbrush jammed against the seat!

CUMINNTSTRKN,

I have the PS High Idler and I set 0500 and 1693 when I use the High Idler. So I hooked up a toggle switch to the PTO wire under the hood running the power from fuse #8, the same as my gauges. I cleared the codes and then I started it, put it in neutral, flipped the toggle switch on and set the Idler. After it ran for a while I shut it off and checked for codes and 0500 and 1693 were set again.

Are we sure that sending a 12v+ to the PTO wire will work? Does the transmission have to be in Park to work? Does the power have to come directly from the battery?

Electrical Tip

If you're not sure whether to ground or power a signal to the ECM, use a resistor, 100- 220 ohms is sufficient, between the pin and either ground or B+ to test it. Measure the voltage at the pin when you make the connection. If it doesn't change with the connection, i. e. close to zero when grounded, close to B+ when hot, then that indicates a low impedance at the pin, suggesting it is an output or the wrong pin. Digital signals are typically 5 volts, so measure the pin with nothing connected to it first. If it's about 4 - 5 volts it may be a "pulled up" input, meaning that there is an internal resistor connected between the input and the ECM's internal +5 volt supply. If this is the case, and you can bring the input down close to zero using the 100 - 220 ohm resistor, all you should have to do is use an SPST (single pole, off-on) switch to either ground the signal or leave it open. Does that make sense?
