Please help! I installed a remote starter on my 98. 5. First time I manually cranked over, the Check Engine light stayed on. The remote starter worked 2 times, and then stopped. The truck drove into the driveway fine.

Anyway, I checked all fuses. I disconnected blue box and remote starter just for the heck of it. I even disconnected the batteries last night. This morning, same thing.

Most importantly, I drove this morning to the car wash (SALT BELT UP NORTH). The truck starts fine. But man, what a dog! It can't get out of it's own way. I just had vp-44 replaced 3 weeks ago and no problems since. I changed the fuel filter, but no difference. I tried to get codes to read on the odometer, but I can not get any thing to happen after turning ignition on 3 times.

Any ideas? I love this site. There area lot of good people willing to help, hopefully to this first time poster.

For some odd reason not every truck will display codes in the odometer window. The only way to find out what's wrong is to take your truck to any shop that has a code scanner. The scanners give more specific info than the odometer window ever will anyway.

Mark,

The 98. 5's don't show the codes in odometer window (I know, I have one). The DC guys hadn't quite finished the software unitl '99 (I think). It sounds like your truck is in "limp in" mode. The only way to figure out what is wrong is have it scanned via a scanner. You can either take it to the dealer which costs about $80. 00. Or for a little more you can purchase a cable and software the works with a PC from
these guys ---> www.obd-2.com

We tried a copy of it out at our last Rocky Mountain TDR meeting and it worked OK. It wasn't spectacular, but it was adequate.

Good Luck

Mark,

Did they replace your lift pump when they replaced your injector pump?

No, they did not change the lift pump, as far as I know. I did not know enough about them back then. I have been reading up this last week on TDR about lift pumps. I am trying to order Fuel pressure guages this morning. They did the refalash on the ECM and replaced Pump after truck died in WOT with Blue Box set at 40% enhancement. The VP-44 lasted about 2 weeks with box. I was told the new pump would last, if it did not die again after 10 minutes with the box.

It definitely reacts like a limp mode. I did not know if the truck had one.

I find it very ironic the light came on when truck was started, after I drove it 300 miles the day before with absolutely no issues. The only thing I did was hook up this remote starter. It must just be a coincidence!

Mark:

Just read a thread in the no engine/drive train section about not being able to use remote starters on our trucks. DC claims they mess up the computers. You may want to check it out.
